of the illness of the Tyler , his investiture was deferred . The Installing Master gave the three usual addresses in an intelligent and impressive manner—we have seldom heard them so well rendered . There being no communications , the lodge was closed . After an excellent banquet , the usual loyal toasts— " The Queen and the Craft " " H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , M . W . G . M . "—were proposed by the W . M ., and received due recognition from the brethren . » Then came the toast of " The M . W . Pro Grand Master , Earl Amherst ; the R . W . Dep . Grand Master , the Earl of Warwick ; and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past . " Song , "Robert toi que j'aime , " by Mile . Marie Vagnoline .

Bro . J . J . Thomas , P . G . Std . Br ., replied on behalf of "The Grand Officers . " He said it was always a pleasure for Grand Officers to visit lodges , he conceived that to be their chief duty . This was the third occasion he had visited the Hampden Lodge , and he trusted he should have the pleasure of doing so again . Song , "So fare thee well , " by Bro . Herbert Emlvn . The toast of "The W . M . " was given by the I . P . M . He said that the present proud position of the W . M . was certainly unique in the history of the Hampden Lodge . Their youthful W . M . presided over them in a double trust and capacity . Young as he

was , he was an old member ( 10 years ) of Hampden House , to which the lodge is attached , he had proved himself to be a great and noble coadjutor . Secondly , he was the first initiate of the Hampden Lodge when it was formed ; he ( the I . P . AI . ) had watched his steady progress in Freemasonry , and now on this auspicious occasion he had reached the acme of his laudable ambition , that of the honoured occupant of the Master's chair . He , in his own name and that of the brethren , wished him a happy and successful year of office , assuring him that he might confidently rely on the good wishes and support of the officers and brethren of the Hampden Lodge . Song , " The Enchantress , " by Miss Florence Glover .

The W . M . replied . He alluded to the active part he had taken in the establishmen of Hampden House ; that he , as others had done , had devoted his time and abilities to the promotion of its interests ; that he , like they , in the discharge of duty , had received a pleasurable reward . There was one name amongst the brethren looked up to and revered by all—he alluded to Bro . Cummings , P . M . —by whom he had been admitted into the light of Freemasonry . He was , as had been stated by the I . P . M ., Bro . Moss , one of the first initiates of the Hampden Lodge . He felt it would only be right to tell the brethren that he would not make any rash promises as to the discharge of his duties

in the chair , which be might be unable to fulfil . He would remind them that a certain place was said " to be paved with good intentions "—intentions , bear in mind , nothing else . He , for his own part , would strive for something higher and nobler than that . He trusted that his pathway of duty would have ; a lasting and firm foundation , thereby preserving the honour and reputation of the lodge over which it was ^ his privilege to preside . If he could succeed in carrying out his wishes , it would , indeed , be a proud satisfaction to him . In conclusion , he thanked the I . P . M . and the brethren for their hearty good wishes . Violin solo , " Gondoliera , " by Bro . T . Wallis .

The W . M . gave the toast of "The I . P . M . and the Installing Master , Bro . Thos . Moss . " He reminded the brethren how energetically Bro . Moss had worked from the inception of the lodge up to the present time . He alluded to the admirable way in which he discharged the duties of the chair—a pattern to its future occupants . That evening he had been the Installing Master . The brethren knew how well he had performed that most beautiful ceremony—he alluded especially to the addresses ; they had

made an impression upon him he was not likely to forget . Now Bro . Moss was Secretary of the lodge he felt confident he might rely upon his efficient services . It was his pleasing duty , in the name of the lodge , to affix on the breast of that worthy and distinguished brother the Past Master ' s jewel unanimously voted to him at the last meeting of the lodge . He congratulated him on the honour conferred upon him . Son ? . "Thereis aland . " bv Bro . Svdnev lamieson .

Humorous song , "Old Brown and I , " by Mr . H . Hudson ; encore , " Kissing Cup Race , " with sneezing effects , most amusing . The I . P . M . replied . He tha ' nk » d the brethren for the handsome jewel they had accorded him , which he should ever wear with both pleasure and pride . He said if he were inclined to be vain he might , indeed , be puffed up by the many honours bestowed upon him ; but he was sobered by the thought of the many excellent Masters who had preceded him , who had done their work equally as efficiently , if not more so than himself . Then , again , on looking around he saw in the persons of the officers of the lodge

brethren thoroughly competent to assist in the work of the W . M . In a facetious manner he described how he had prepared the ritual of installation . He said it was on the lone part of the seashore of the little village in Kent— " the merry , mirthful , molluscous Margate . " He thanked the brethren for their hearty response to the toast . " The Visitors , " "The Treasurer and Secretary , " ^ "The Joining Member , " and "The Officers " tollowed in rapid succession , and received due recognition at the hands of the brethren . The Tyler's toast concluded the evening .

The musical arrangements were under the able direction of Bros . G . W . Smith , Org ., and H . Williams , Asst . Org . The accompanist was Bro . J . Halle .

Beach Lodge , No . 2622-The above lodge met at the Horns , Kennington Park , on the ioth inst ., on the occasion ot the annual installation , and was well attended by the members and by visiting brethren . The lodge has mainly as its members the departmental officials of the London and South-Western Railway Company . During the evening Bro . B . Donald , 342 , of the Admiralty , was admitted as a joining member , and three brethren—Bros . W . A . Matthews , R . Ryan , and A .. C . Green—were passed . The W . M . elect , Bro . Henry Spooner , was installed into the chaii for the ensuing year by Bro . Henrv

Almond , I . P . M ., assisted byBro . Robert Lingley , P . M ., P . Z ., as D . C- Bro . Spooner afterwards nominated and invested the following as his officers during the ensuing year , namely : Bros . W . Tipper , S . W . ; W . Hammond , J . W . ; T . Higgs , P . M ., P . Z ., Treas . ; H . Almond , Sec . ; E . Sweeting , S . D . ; D . S . Milne , J . D . j E . Wells , I . G . ; T . Parminter , D . C . ; W . Owen , A . D . C . ; P . Macdonald , Org . ; J . B . Mahoney and T . G . Crassweller , Stwds . ; and W . Wickens , Tyler . At trie conclusion of the ceremony Bro . Almond was presented with a Past Master's jewel , and Bro . T . Higgs , P . M ., with a Treasurer's jewel . The installation banquet was subsequently held , the newly-installed W . M . being in the chair .

Among those present , in addition to the officers , were Bros . Coutts , Coleman , Ryan , Grayston , Eason , Payne , Mahoney , and Crassweller . Visitors : Bros , H . Cohen , P . M . j Bouck . M . D ., P . Green , Taylor , Thomas , and Campbell . A recherche banquet was served by Bro . R . J . Brinkley , and an excellent musical programme carried out under the directionof Bro . Phil Macdonald , who is well known as the organist of St . Paul ' s , Covent Garden . Bro . Macdonald is also the leader of the Curfew Glee Singers , who rendered several part songs with exquisite taste .

Their singing of "Soldier ' s Love" was particularly effective , while ' the Lass of Richmond Hill " —an origin » 1 composition by Bro . Macdonild , full of playfulness and sentiment—was received w ' . th rapturous applause . Miss L'ly Jepp , who has a pleasing contralto voice , gave " When the heart is young " and " Going to Kildare , " while Miss Louise VVeaver , with her rich soprano , appeared . to advantage in " Lova ' s Nocturne " and "The Miller and the Maid . " The male vocalists included Messrs . S . Hunt and H . Evans . Bro . Cohen varied the programme with a recitation . After the loyal and Masonic toasts had been honoured ,

Bro . H . Almond , I . P . M ., congratulated the lodge on having in its chiir an able Mason and an enthusiastic Mister . ( Applause . ) The Chairman responJed in a genial , fraternal spirit , emphasising the importance of a continuous and unceasing support of the Masonic Charities . They had not been backward in the past , but there was , he thought , room for improvement . ( Hear , h » ar . ) He concluded by proposing " The Health of the Installing Master , " to whom he offered his congratulations and thanks for the excellent services he had rendered to the lodge .

Bro , Almond , in reply , remarked that the lodge was only three years old , yet it showed remarkable vitality . Of course , it had to go through the initial financial struggles , but , after making due allowance for that , he ( the speaker ) was able last year , as Steward for the Royal Masonic institution for Girls , to handover , ( , 42 to the Treasurer of that great Institution . ( Applause . ) The lodge , being so closely connected with the London and South-Western Railway , held its lodge of instruction at Brunswick House , Vauxhall , to help the brethren to a full appreciation of Masonic ritual . ( Hear , hear . ) The remaining toasts were "The Visitors , " "The Past Masters , " coupled with " The Treasurer , " and " The Officers of the Lodge . "

J . Halle .
