The Regent School Elections.

THE REGENT SCHOOL ELECTIONS .

The School Elections are over , and for the next six months the hopes and expectations of those interested in the several candidates are at rest . There was a heavy poll on both days ,

and several of the unsuccessful children carry forward votes to the next April ballot which , with a little extra exertion on the part of their friends and supporters , should serve to ensure for them admission into the Schools .

For the ROYAL MASONIC INSTITUTION FOR GIRLS there was an approved list of 33 candidates and 16 vacancies London sent up n candidates , but only succeeded in carrying

three of them , while the Provinces and Stations Abroad , which furnished 22 children , had the satisfaction of securing the election of as many as 13 of the number . A London Girl , who brought forward 2185 votes from her three previous attempts ,

headed the poll with 5523 , and a second from the same contingent , who obtained 1861 votes in April , stood next with 5048 votes . The third in order was one of three candidates from the Province of Middlesex , and as she started with 4037

votes , it is not to be wondered that with a few hundreds added , she was able to secure a place , her total , when the poll was declared , being 4939 ; in fact , if she had not scored another vote , she would in all probability have obtained a

place . Northumberland and Durham furnished the fourth successful girl . She had 405 1 votes in hand when the poll was opened , and as this was her last chance , her

friends appear to have resolved on giving her a few hundreds more , and her final score was 4 836 ; here , also , success would apparently have followed had no addition been made to the number she started with . London furnished No . K ,

her final poll being 4801 , of which 1072 were brought forward from April , while the Cheshire girl was sixth with 4777 votes , and the Cornish girl seventh with 4758 votes . The next in order

hailed from Valparaiso . She had obtained support to the extent of 1816 votes at the four previous contests , and , as this was her only remaining chance , her friends exerted themselves to such

good purpose that she finished the day with a total of 4682 votes . No . 9 , from Lincolnshire , began with 23 votes and finished with 46 S 2 votes , thus tieing with the girl previously mentioned , while one of the two West Yorkshire children was

close up with 4671 votes , the Cumberland and Westmoreland being next with 46 45 votes , and the second West Yorkshire child 12 th with 4640 votes . Durham secured the 13 th place for its one candidate with 4 609 votes , and one of the two

applicants from Essex was next with 4497 votes , of which 288 3 were brought forward from the last two elections , a second Middlesex girl , who already had 2159 votes to the good , being next with 4025 votes ; the last of the successful girls hailing

from Warwickshire , and polling 3701 votes , of which all but eight were given her on this occasion . The two highest Unsuccessful candidates obtained 3346 and 3240 votes respectively , the former—from Hong Kong and South China and South Wales

( E . D . )—having 218 votes in hand from April , while the latterfrom London—was a new candidate . Another London girl polled 2345 votes , the Oxfordshire girl 2304 votes , and the girl with claims on Staffordshire and Leicestershire and Rutland

2146 votes , the second and third of this group having been candidates in April , when they received 1432 and 546 votes respectively . There were also two London girls , of whom one obtained 1675 and the other 1658 votes , and the third Middlesex

applicant scored 1313 . One other child—from London—polled over 1000 votes , and the remainder less than that number , the lowest on the list having only eight to her credit . In all 105 , 006 votes were available , of which 22 , 812 were brought forward and

82 , 194 issued for this election ; but of the latter number only 74 , 109 passed the Scrutineers , the number of unused or spoiled votes being 8085 . The list of candidates for the

ROYAL MASONIC INSTITUTION FOR BOYS was originally 34 , of which London furnished 10 , and was partly interested in another , while the Provinces and Abroad were responsible for the remaining 23 ; but at the last moment

the candidate from Monmouthshire was withdrawn , while two extraordinary vacancies having occurred , the Court resolved they should be filled and hence the 33 boys competed for 17 instead of 15 vacancies , as originally arranged . At this election , London

fared very successfully carrying six out of her 10 cases and helping to secure the success of the boy she was onl y in part interested in , while the other 10 vacancies fell to the Provinces and Abroad , one of the two Suffolk boys having the satisfaction

of heading the poll with 73 8 9 , his friends being determined that , as this was his one and only chance , there should be no doubt about his winning . A London lad was second with 6457 '< one of the West Yorkshire boys , with only this chance of

winning , next with 6453 votes ; then the Durham boy with 6 431 ; then the second West Yorkshire lad with 6365 ; and then two youngsters from London with 6214 and 616 9 votes respectively , the latter having only this chance given him of winning

admission into the School . No . 8 , from Gloucestershire , polled 6035 , and , No . 9 , from Antigua , 59 8 7 votes , of which 1152 were obtained in April . A London boy stood next with 5939 votes , the Cheshire lad polling 5750 votes

and being followed by the boy with claims on London , Dorsetshire , and West Lancashire with 5604 votes . Then came the Middlesex boy , who started on his last chance with 2072 votes , and won the 13 th place , with 5499 votes , one of the two
