WYVENHOE . Colne Lodge ( No . 2477 ) . —The first session of this recently-established lodge was concluded on Tuesday , the 10 th inst ., when upwards of 50 members were present , at the Greyhound Hotel . Bro . Claude E . Egerton-Grecn , the W . M ., occupied the chair , and during the proceedings presented to the lodge , on behalf of his wife , a very handsome lodge banner , beautifully worked on a light blue

groundwork of silk , the subjects being a yacht in full sail , a raven ( representing the " Port Reeve" of Colchester ) , and the arms quartered of the Egerton and Green families . Underneath in a scroll is the legend— " Presented by Helen , wife of Claude E . Egerton-Green , first Master . " The presentation was received with loud and long continued applause , and a hearty vote of thanks to Airs . Egerton-Green , was , on the motion of Bro . Harold Francis , D . C ,

seconded by Bro . Gustavus Pratt , S . W ., carried by acclamation , and ordered to be entered on the minutes . Bro . Pratt was unanimously elected VV . M . for the ensuing year , and Bro . Col . Tyssen Holroyd was re-elected Treasurer , and Bro . A . Wright , Tyler . The business of the eveningincluded six raisings . Although the lodge has been consecrated but six months it numbers 70 members . The banner above referred to was nanufactured by Bro . George Kenning .

Relics Of Washington.

RELICS OF WASHINGTON .

The dispatch in the Journal March 2 nd , from Niagara Fails , N . Y ., concerning remarkable curiosities found in the archives of a Masonic lodge at Niagara Falls , recalls the valuable possession of the Grand Ledge of Massachusetts , A . F . and A . M . The news of Washington ' s death reached Boston on

the 23 rd of December , 1799 . On the 2 Sth of December following the Grand Lodge , by circular letter , " testified its veneration for his excellent character . " On January 15 th , 1 S 00 , the Grand Lodge voted " to pay funeral honours to his memory on the 22 nd of February , " which was subsequently changed to February nth . Previous to this , January nth , 1800 , Past

Grand Masters John Warren , Paul Revere , and Josiah Bartlett , in the name of the Grand Lodge , wrote a letter to Mrs . Washington , ir . which they said : " To their expressions of sympathy on this solemn dispensation the Grand Lodge have subjoined an order that a golden urn be prepared as a deposit for a lock of hair , an invaluable relique of the hero and the patriot

whom their wishes would immortalise , and that ic be preserved with the jewels and reglia of the society . " To this request Mrs . Washington replied , through Mr . Lear , enclosing a lock of Washington ' s hair , which was duly received . The urn was made of gold , by Paul Revere , in yvhich the lock of hair was placed , and where it has rested for nearly a century .

On February nth , 1800 , a Masonic procession , consisting of more than 1600 brethren , was formed at the Old State House and moved to the Stone Chapel , where fune / al services were held . The golden urn was borne in that procession , and was afterward

deposited in the archives oi the Grand Lodge , where it still remains . Anion" ; the treasures that are transmitted from one Grand Alaster to his successor is this golden urn , the work of Paul Revere , containing a lock of the hair of the immortal Washington . —Boston Journal .

BRO . J . H . CLIFTON , No . 1833 . We regret to announce the sudden death of Bro . J . H . Clilton , of the well-known linn of Messrs . Clifton and Carter , Solicitors , of Bristol . The tad event occurred at the police-court at Swindon . Bro . Clifton was defending a rlient , of New Swindon , in an important case , which had proceeded about an hour , when

Bio . Clifton was taken ill , and retired to the magistrates' room , where he rested for about h ilf-an-huur , and had a glass of wine and a biscuit . Thc chairman of the bench thtn suggested that the ease should be adjourned , and Mr . H . Kinneir , who was prosecuting the case , joined in the request . But Bro . Clifton , feeling much better , wished to have the case proceeded

with . Accordingly , about two 0 clock , he opened the defence to the case , and concluded it ; the magistrates retired for consultation in the case ; and in their absence Bro . Clifton was again taken ill , and left the court for a short rest ii , the clerk ' s office . His condition , however , became so serious that it was thought prudent to send fnr medic il aid . Bro . Clifton felt he was dy ino , and made a remark to that effect ,

and he passed away quietly a few minutes before live o'clock . Very recently Bro . Chiton had been warned by lii .-i medical advisers of the critical state of his health . On his first seizure he told the ma gistrate ' s clerk that he knew Ids life hung on a thread , but that he wished to die in harness . Our deceased brother was a member of the St . Keyna Lodge , No . 18 33 , in the Province of Somerset , which meets i . i the village of Keyiisli . 'ini where he lived .
