Bro . Lord and Lady George Hamilton , after visiting the Prince and Princess of Wales atSandringham , returned to the official residence of the First Lord of the Admiralty on Monday . Bros . Earl Onslow and Baron H . de Worms , M . P ., have been visiting Paris in connection vvith the Sugar Bounties Question , the former having returned on Monday , while the latter prolonged his stay .

The funeral of the late Bro . Alderman Sir John Staples , K . C . M . G ., took place at Highgate Cemetery on Thursday , and was numerously attended by the family and friends of our deceased brother .

H . R . H . the Princess Mary Duchess of Teck will present the prizes to the 24 th Middlesex ( Post Office ) Volunteers at the Guildhall on Saturday , the 4 th February next , Bro . Lord Mayor de Keyser being in the chair . Bro . the Marquis of Hartington , M . P ., left Charing Cross on Thursday morning , by the 9 . 40 a . m . Continental express , for Paris , whence he will continue his journey to Italy for a brief lest before the reassembling of Parliament .

The Lord Mayor , Bro . Alderman De Keyser , will preside at the annual distribution of prizes to the Students of the City of London College , vvhich will take place on Monday , the 6 th February , when the prizes will be given away by Bro . Lord Halsbury , Lord High Chancellor .

At a meeting of the Court of Aldermen , held at the Guildhall on VVednesday , Bro . the Lord Mayor , who presided , referred in feeling terms to the loss the City and the Court had sustained through the death of Bro . Alderman Sir John Staples , K . C . M . G ., and on motion duly made and seconded , it was resolved to send a vote of sympathy on the part of the Court with Lady Staples and her family .

Prince Albert Victor of Wales has been visiting at Tranby Croft for the purpose of being present at the Holderness Hunt Ball ; and on Wednesday his Royal Highness visited Hull , where he lunched vvith the Sheriff and sundry distinguished guests , subsequently attending a meeting at the Artillery Barracks in connection vvith the local branch of the Discharged Soldiers' Aid Society .

Bro . J . B . Gumming , the Treasurer of the Anglo-American Lodge at London , has lately been on a visit to his birthplace , Philadelphia . All the courtesies possible were 'shown him during his flying visit ; a special invitation having been extended by Bro . Godfrey Keebler to participate in the ceremony of laying the corner-stone of the Goethe monument in Fairmount Park .

—Philadelphia Keystone . The Field Battery of the Honourable Artillery Company will give a Smoking Concert at their headquarters , Finsbury-square , E . G ., on Thursday , the 16 th February next , under the patronage of the Prince of Wales , who is Colonel and Captain - General of the Regiment . Bros . Meybrick and Lionel Brough are among

those who have promised to give their services on the occasion . Bro . Lieut .-Col . the Duke of Portland will preside on the occasion . The Executive Committee of the Relief Fund for the sufferers by the fire at the Grand Theatre , Islington , met , under the presidency of Bro . the Earl of Londesborough , on Friday , the 13 th instant , when it was resolved

that all artists at the recent theatre who were receiving over £ 3 per week should be paid half salaries the day following , and that all under £ 3 should receive full pay . It was also resolved to appropriate JC ' SO to purchase new instruments for the orchestra , to re-place those which had been destroyed by fire . Bros . Edward Terry , E . Ledger , Lionel Brough , and Under-Sheriff Thos . Beard were among the members present .

May , of the Great Arthur-street Mission , Golden-lane , writes to his friends : "Hitherto this winter we have been giving 2500 to 3000 meals a day to the hungry , homeless poor , as well as to the resident poor , making over 200 , 000 this season . We now must stop these meals to homeless and general unemployed immediately , unless friends help right away . The average cost

of meals has been zd . each , but by keeping to the porridge meals we can satisfy the most hungry man for id ., thus £ 5 will feed 1200 , £ 1 over 200 . From 1200 to 1500 have the free breakfast every Sunday . With all our experience we cannot conceive a greater calamity to many thousands of poor just at this time . We willingly give every bit of strength and time vvith vvhich God blesses us ,

but regret that four ot our family are en the sick list through overwork , hope being just reported of one in a dangerous state for a fortnight . Lord Erskine , eldest son of Bro . the Earl of Mar and Kellie , Past Grand Master Mason of Scotland , has been gazetted to a second lieutenancy in the Scots Guards .

Bro . Lord Stanley of Preston returned to his residence in Portland Place on Monday evening , Lady Stanley , however , remaining in the country for the present . Bro . Sir Michael E . Hicks-Beach , Bart ., M . P ., addressed a very large political meeting which was held in the Victoria Hall , Clifton , on Tuesday evening .

Bro . the Earl and Countess of Egmont left England last week for several weeks' cruise in the Mediterranean , in the course of vvhich they purpose visiting Alexandria . A tea meeting , at vvhich Bro . Sir Charles Dilke , Bart ., presided , was helJ at the Chelsea Town Hall , on Monday evening , the poverty of London being the subject of discussion .

Her Majesty has kindly become Patron of an evening concert vvhich will be given by the string band of the 2 nd Life Guards at Prince ' s Hall , Piccadilly , on Monday , the 30 th instant , in aid of the funds of the Soldiers ' Daughters' Home . It is expected that the Prince and Princess of VVales and other guests at Sandringham will attend the meet of the West Norfolk Hunt at Conghern Hall , tomorrow ( Saturday ) ,

The banquets which Bro . the Lord Mayor had intended to give at the Mansion House to the members of the Court of Aldermen and Court of Common , [ Counci ) , have been postponed in consequence of the death of Bro . Alderman Sir John Staples , K . C . M . G . Among the numerous wreaths placed upon the coffin of the late Bro . Sir John Staples was one sent by

the Master and members of the St . Botolph's Lodge , No . 2020 , of which the deceased was a founder , and VV . M . during the first two years of its career . In our notice last week of the laying of the foundation-stone of Temple Bar by Lady Meux we omitted to state that Bro . C . E . Ponting , of Lockeridge , near Marlborough , Wilts , is the architect appointed to superintend the re-erection . Bro . Ponting is also the architect employed in the restoration of the celebrated Waltham Cross .

Before Easter there will be three courses of Cantor lectures at the Society of Arts , by Mr . A . G . Salamon , Mr . J . Mayall , jun ., and Professor C . Robetts-Austen . The course of two lectures to be delivered as a memorial of the late Dr . Mann will be given by Professor O . J . Lodge , F . R . S ., the subject being the " Protection of Buildings from Lightning . '' There will also be a course of three lectures on " Etching and Mezzotint Engraving , " by Professor Hubert Herkomer .

Mr . J . H . Lloyd , who is on the point of publishing a history of tfighgate , proves that the district was originally a Norman settlement , as the various names in its vicinity suggested . At a public meeting , recently , the author gave some curious contents of some Court rolls of the years 128 4 , 1375 , and 1460 , which he had obtained from the library of St . Paul ' s Cathedral , vvith the able assistance of Mr . leayes of the British Museum .

The Executive Committee of the Relief Fund for the sufferers by the fire at the Grand Theatre , Islington , met , under the presidency of Bro . the Earl of Londesborough , on Friday , the 13 th instant , when it was resolved

that all artists at the recent theatre who were receiving over £ 3 per week should be paid half salaries the day following , and that all under £ 3 should receive full pay . It was also resolved to appropriate JC ' SO to purchase new instruments for the orchestra , to re-place those which had been destroyed by fire . Bros . Edward Terry , E . Ledger , Lionel Brough , and Under-Sheriff Thos . Beard were among the members present .

Mr . J . H . Lloyd , who is on the point of publishing a history of tfighgate , proves that the district was originally a Norman settlement , as the various names in its vicinity suggested .
