FORMATION OF THE UNITED GRAND LODGE OF NEW SOUTH WALES .
The most important event in the annals of Masonry in Australasia took place on Thursday , 16 th August , in the Great Hall of the Sydney University , which has been granted by the university authorities for Masonic purposes . On the above evening there was lawfully established , in strict accordance with Masonic law , usage , and precedent , an United Independent
Grand Lodge for New South Wales . As our brethren are aware , this Masonic union was brought about through the diplomatic efforts of a conference of 15 brethren , chosen in equal numbers from the N . S . W ., E . C , and S . C , under the authority of their respective Grand Lodges . After . a
patient and fraternal consideration of the condition of Masonry in the colony , the conference unanimously agreed to a " basis of union , " which was submitted to and approved by the Grand Lodge of New South Wales and the District Grand Lodges of the English and Scotch Constitutions at communications specially convened to discuss the proposal .
Ihe articles of Union were then officially forwarded to each subordinate lodge for consideration , with the result that the " Union" was unanimously adopted by the lodges under the bannerol the Grand Lodge of New South Wales , and with only one non-content in the English lodges , and with only two by the Scotch lodges , or in other words by 183 lodges out of 186
holding charters . This soul-stirring unanimity evoked widespread enthusiasm and joy . Old Masons who for so many weary years had been estranged Masonically , joined hands with the fervour that proved ho . w deeply they felt and yearned for the Union of all Masons . This acceptance
of the " articles of the Union" necessitated the holding of a Grand Lodge Communication for the election of Grand Lodge officers , and taking further necessary steps to properly organise the new governing body as a " United Grand Lodge . "
In order that each Constitution should be represented fairly in the executive offices of the Grand Lodge , it was decided by the conference that each Constitution should nominate a candidate for the office allotted to it , the E . C . beginning with the Deputy Grand Master , then the S . C . with
Senior Grand Warden , and so on downwards in the order of precedence . The plan worked admirably , with the exception of the S . C , the brethren of which experienced the unexpected difficulty of being unable to choose one candidate for each office , and so left the rival aspirants to office to have their claims dealt with by the votes of the three Constitutions .
