Provincial Grand Lodge Of West Yorkshire.

liberal arls the Fellow Craft is bound to pursue , this hall , wherein we meet , cannot be passed over without a brief Masonic recognition as to its origin and present position in Keighley . On one Saturday night , 22 nd January , 1825 , four working men of Keighley met together and talked over how they might found a Mechanics' Institute for Keighley . On the Monday following , with nine others , they met and founded " a society for mutual instruction in the liberal arts and sciences , " and at the end of the year the society numbered 71 members . The lofty ideal at which these sturdy Yorkshire Keighley men

aimed , combined with fortitude , piudence , and justice , stamped the Keighley Mechanics' Institute" with a character and reputation , which it has ever been the ambition of their successors tr > maintain and strengthen . The last movement of this enterprise has been the magnificent new wing , with the object of providing accommodation for imparting that technical knowledge now considered so necessary to complete the education of all classes of the handicraft community . Dr . Self , on behalf of the London Clothworkers' Companv . opened this portion of the building for the benefit of the town of

Keighley and of Yorkshire on the 14 th October , 18 S 7 ; and here again the Cratt steps ¦ in , for among the many contributors are William Summerscales and Sons , and very ¦ many other names of generous Freemasons known to us . What is technical education ? 1 think we may call the knowledge of the acquisition of the principles of an industry"trained intelligence "—to give to the "hands " of workshops , trained intelligence , that their " heads" may guide the work of their hands . The great industrial machine of Keighley labour is good enough itself , but it needs proper oiling to make it work

smoothly . The lubricant which it so much requires has been provided by Lord Fredk . Cavendish , Mr . Isaac Holden , M . P ., and others , in this technical educational institute of the productive classes . May it answer the view of its founders , to the aspiration of this P . G . Lodge . In this magnificent building Prov . Grand Lodge is welcomed to-day , and it in turn greets the three new lodges added to its roll since April , viz ., St . Leonard's ,

consecrated at Sheffield , 21 st July , 18 SS ; St . Nicholas' Lodge , No . 2250 , Thorne , consecrated 25 th July , iSSS ; and Hallamshire Lodge , No . 226 S , Sheffield , on the 3 rd October , 188 S . We trust these lodges may have a prosperous existence , and add their quota of contributions to strengthen our charitable institutions and voting power of our Charity Committee . In closing this address let me mention what has been done in Charity by the province and the Craft this

year—WEST YORKSHIRE CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE MASONIC CHARITIES . £ s . d . " Annuitants' Festival of Aged Freemasons and Widows , " Feb . 29 th 384 6 o "R . M . I , for Boys , " June 27 th 253 1 o " R . M . I , for Girls , " June 7 th 2615 2 o

£ 74 , 372 7 o This total was reached on the 27 th June , and there is no doubt that it will be considerably increased before the close of the year . The scheme for the enlargement of the Girls' School , financially , is secured ; and I thank the lodges in my province for their support and magnificent generosity towards the augmentation of 70 girls in the School . I ask the new lodges in the year to come to help our Charity Committee , and to contribute likewise according to their ability . Grand Lodge granted on 5 th September to the widow of Wade of this

the sum of ^ 50 Bro . Joseph lodge , and £$ 0 to Bro . John Johnson of Three Grand Principles , Dewsbury . We acknowledge , with gratitude , these benefactions by the " London Board of Benevolence" to West Yorkshire applicants for help . Brethren , I hope these acts of benevolence may stimulate the various lodges " Continually , to be given to all good works . " The aspirations of this Prov . Grand Lodge are , that " all the brethren under its jurisdiction may walk worthy of the vocation

wherewith ye are called , with all lowliness and meekness , forbearing one another in love ; endeavouring to keep the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace , " so that West Yorkshire lodges may have in the future , as in the past , a contented , and prosperous , and harmonious community of Freemasons , the pride of this Provincial Grand Lodge , and the very envy of the world , outside the mystic circle of the Craft wherever the English language is spoken .

The Prov . Grand Master , at the conclusion of his address , presented to the W . M . of the Royal Yorkshire Lodge , Bro . Lee , P . M ., P . P . G . S . B ., the centenary warrant , signed by his H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , as Grand Master of the Order . He also decorated him with the centenary jewel , in token of the lodge ' s uninterrupted existence for 100 years . Other business was then transacted , after which a procession was formed , and the members , in full regalia , marched two abreast to the Parish Church ,

where a specially-arranged service was held . To the public the procession was one of the most interesting spectacles that have taken place in Keighley for a long time . Three o ' clock was the time appointed for the commencemeet of the service at the church , but the great amount of business that had had to be transacted in the lodge compelled the brethren to forego the observance of exact punctuality . As it was , the public filled the street ,

patiently awaiting the procession , whilst others , chiefly ladies , betook themselves to the church , and secured seating accommodation in the gallery . At last the monotony of waiting was broken , and in the long-drawn procession , in all its variety and brilliancy , came the Mayor , like a good Freemason , gracing the procession with his presence , adorned with the gold chain of office . In the procession there were some 60 lodges represented , and the youngest lodges took precedence .

The brethren having entered the church , aad the choir taken their places , the service commenced with the singing of the hymn " All people that on earth do dwell , " the exhortations and prayers being read by Bro . R . COLLINS , Prov . S . G . Chap . The first lesson , I . Kings , chap , v ., was read by Bro . the Rev . W . CROMBIE , the Prov . G . Chap ., and the second lesson ,

I . Peter , chap , ii ., by Bro . the Rev . W . S . TURNBULL , P . P . G . Chap . The 108 th Psalm was chanted . The service was Ebdon in C , and the anthem was to Mendelssohn ' s setting , Bro . Blagbro taking the solo " Be thou faithful , " and rendering it with fine effect . The chorus , " Cast thy burden , " was given by the choir with fair precision . Letters of apology were received from four Prov . G . O fhcers and 60 Past Prov . G . Officers and brethren . Visitors : V . W . Bro . Rev . C . \ y Spencer Stanhope , P . G . Chap . England ; and Bro . Rev . T . Newton Righv ' P . P . G . Chap . Warwickshire . s y ' The sermon was preached by Bro . the Rev . J . ROOM , B . A ., P . P . Grand Chaplain , and Chaplain of the Royal Yorkshire Lodge . His text was

James 11 ., v . 23— " He was called the Friend of God . The preacher remarked that the person referred to was Abraham , the father of the Jewish race . He is three times , in Scripture , called the Friend of God Now , a man can be called the Friend of God only so far as he loves , trusts ' and obeys Him . These conditions of friendship Abraham fully satisfied * He proved his love to God by the cheerful surrender of country , family

associations , and ancestral privileges in order to please Him ; his trust in God by a cordial acceptance of God ' s promises , and an unreserved reliance upon them , even where fulfilment seemed naturally impossible ; and his obedience by a whole life of cheerful and unhesitating conformity to God ' s commands . These points the preacher dwelt upon at some length , and illustrated and proved by reference to the leading events in Abraham ' s

history . In his general application of the subject , the preacher observed that though in our days the Friends of God are but seldom called upon to give such trying proofs of their love , trust , and obedience , yet all mi ght learn lessons from the life of Abraham . Love , faith , and obedience are the essentials of all true religions ; and in all ages every individual experience affords ample material for their cultivation and exercise . To his

Masonic brethren he recommended them earnestly and affectionately . " We belong to a brotherhood of love ; let us love . We recognise the necessity of faith ; let us believe . We honour loyalty and dutiful submission ; let us obey . And in so doing , we shall prove ourselves the Sons of faithful Abraham ; and , like him , vindicate our title to be called the Friend of God . "

The offertory , which was taken , on behalf of the Cottage Hospital , \ amounted to , £ 20 . At the conclusion of the service , the procession was re-formed , the brethren marching two abreast to the Technical Institute , where the lod ge was closed . The brethren afterwards sat down to an excellent repast at the Devonshire Hotel . The W . M . of the Royal Yorkshire Lodge presided .
