Reports Of Masonic Meetings.

The Worshipful Master , in returning thanks , observed tbat Col . Sewell had expressed gratitude for thc kindly feelings expressed towards him , but he ( the speaker ) was vastly indebted to Jthat brother , who had introduced him into the Alliance Lodge . He hoped he should never do anything to disgrace the position which he at present occupied through the kindness of the brethren . His desire

was to keep to the old traditions of the lodge , and in that respect he confessed himself to be a grand old Tory . He alluded to the interest which had been expressed towards the lodge by successive Lord Mayors and Sheriffs , and said he felt grateful for the assistance which had been rendered to him by the Treasurer and Secretary and the working officers of the lodge . He was most fortunately situated in having an array of colleagues around him , for

there was no single officer present who would not , or could not , assist him in carrying out the work of the lodge . Several complimentary toasts followed , including "The Visitors , " for whom Bro . Scott replied ; " The Treasurer and Secretary , " acknowledged by Bro . R . J . Pawley , P . M ., & c . The proceedings were agreeably diversified with recitations and singing , and avery pleasant evening was passed .

Gooch , 1441 ; and others . The lodge having been opened , and previous minutes

confirmed , a notice of motion was given for the removal of the lodge to the White Swan Hotel , Upper Norwood , its present place of meeting being , in consequence of circumstances connected with its original "home , " only temporarily permitted by dispensation . A candidate for passing not arriving in good time , the ceremony of installation was at once proceeded with , and Bro . Henry Stokes was

presented to the out-going and Installing Master . Bro . Williams completed a highly creditable year of office by performing the ceremony in a most efficient manner , assisted by Bro . John Hammond , who , at his desire , subsequently delivered the addresses . The newly-installed Master , Bro . Stokes , then appointed and invested his officers in the following order : Bros . Joseph W . Hartley ,

S . W . ; II . Hooper , J . VV . ; Walter Hopekirk , P . M ., Treas . ; II . Maunder Williams , I . P . M ., Sec . ; A . Darch , P . M ., S . D . ; F . France , J . D . j G . R . Langley , I . G . j J . H . Worstencroft , D . C . j G . Mordey and O'Reilly , Stwds . ; W . II . Simons , Org . ; A . Pitman , Asst . Org . ; and

Charles Sheppard , lyler . A handsome Past Master ' s jewel was next presented to Bro . Williams in a most appropriate address from the W . M ., and the gift was suitably acknowledged , as was also the further present of a collar and lodge jewel to that worthy brother . An unexpected acknowledgment of the services of Bro . John Hammond , as one of thc founders , and hitherto Secretary

of the Iodge , was then made to that brother by the presentation of a special jewel selling forth by its inscription the services rendered . Bro . Hammond expressed his surprise and pleasure at receiving a gift so spontaneous and unlocked for , and modestly deprecated the eulogiums which had accompanied the presentation . Afterthe disposal of some routine business , the lodge was closed , and the brethren adjourned to banquet .

The customary leading toasts having been duly honoured , that of "The VVorshipful Master" was proposed by Bro . Williams , the I . P . M ., in terms of high appreciation of the services of the W . M . in his previous discharge of the respective offices he had held in the lodge , and which had so well qualified him for his present exalted position . The remarks of Bro . Williams were cordially endorsed , and an

enthusiastic reception was given to the toast . In response , the W . M . assured the brethren that no pains on his part should be spared to sustain the present reputation of the lodge , and its continued and permanent progress . Adopting a very proper order of arranging the programme of toasts , That of " The Masonic Charities , " one which it has been heretofore too much the custom to relegate to the very

near conclusion of Masonic entertainments , followed the response of the W . M ., by whom the claims of the respective Institutions were set forth , with special allusion to the forthcoming Festival of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys , whose respected Secretary was then present , and from whom he solicited an acknowledgment of the toast . Bro . F . Binckes , who received avery hearty greeting , after endorsing many of the remarks of the VV . M ., and

thanking him on behalf of the sister Institutions , in one of his best and most characteristic speeches , interested the brethren by special reference to the Boys' School , its progress of late years , and its present position . He had peculiar pleasure in recording his appreciation of the past efforts of the Honor Oak Lodge , and the expectation that the same disposition to aid the School in which he had so deep an interest would be continued . He looked forward

to the ensuing Festival with somcamountof natural apprehension lest the hard times of the present should affect the pecuniary result , but still had faith that the generous impulse of the Craft generally to sustain their most important Charities would prevent any serious disappointment . For the past assistance rendered by the Honor Oak Lodge he entertained the liveliest feeling of gratitude , and he was induced to hope for a continuance of support in the near

future . For the toast of "The P . M . ' s , " Bros . Williams , Phillips , Hammond , and Hopekirk severally returned thanks , Bro . Williams particularly referring to the very happy year of office through which he had just passed , and which had been made so agreeable by the devotion of his officers and the attention of the members generally to the best interests ef the lodge ; and Bro . Hammond again

referring to the manner in which what services he had been able to render had been recognised in the earlier part of the evening . The names of 25 visitors were then read , and the VV . M . called upon his officers and brethren to accord them a hearty welcome . Bro . James Stevens , P . M . 720 , 1216 , 1426 , by general request , returned thanks for the greeting accorded , and in

the course of many laudatory remarks on the perfect Masonic work which had been witnessed that evening ( which remarks were frequently endorsed by the general body of visitors ) expressed tlie hope that the brilliant example set by those who had hitherto ruled the lodge might be emulated , and probably equalled , if they could not be excelled , by the present and future occupants of the chair of K . S . The lodge was an ornament to the Craft ,

both in respect of ritual work and ceremonial , and its hospitality had been so distinctive as to secure its attractiveness to all who could enjoy the honour of placing their names on the visitors' list . Of the many now assembled he felt assured there was none who could do otherwise than wish the lodge the prosperity it so richly deserved . The toast of " The Officers of the Lodge " was ably

responded to by Bro . Hartley , S . W ., and shortly afterwards the Tyler's toast brought a most successful meeting to a pleasant conclusion . Amongst the many vocalists and reciters of the evening we should not omit to make special mention of the admirable efforts of Bros . Cranch , Simons , Sargeant , Pitman , and Forster ; in regard to the last named of whom we may say in the words of "Capt . Reece" ( words which he and others will quite understand ) "It was his duty , and he did I "

LODGE OF KING SOLOMON ( No . 2029 ) . — On Saturday last this lodge held at Red Lion-square one of its regular meetings . In the absence of Bro . Harrison Branthwaite , VV . M ., Bro . Henry VVright , VV . M . 1 S 27 , occupied the chair . After opening the lodge , the minutes were confirmed . Bros . J . Hughes , C . C , VVilliams , Jardine , and Jones were next raised by the acting VV . M . to the Sublime Degree of a M . M ., he giving the traditional

history . He then passed to the Degree of F . C . Bros . Capt . Sheffield , Hewson , and Fawcett , and afterwards initiated Capt . Dowdy , Dr . Bourns , and Mr . Wallace . In all three Degrees Bro . H . VVright gave the full ritual , together with the charges , and the lectures on the tracing boards . A brother proposed a candidate for initiation , as did the acting VV . M . for Bro . Branthwaite . The lodge was closed in due form , and the numerous

brethren , who included Bros . Richardson , S . D . ; VVilliams , J . VV . ; H . Tipper , Sec ; Matthews , acting I . G . ; J . Williams , Wiseman , Cairns , and the brethren who had taken their various Degrees , adjourned to refreshment , presided over by Bro . VVright , who gave the sentiments , it being a lodge of abstainers , at banquet , instead of toasts . " The Healths of ths Master and Past Master , Bro . Dr . Richardson , " were cordially received , and regret expressed that they were not there to reply personally .

The sentiment of" The Initiates " was warmly responded to , each brother saying a few words in reply . Bro . Tipper sang the Entered Apprentice ' s song , the brethren ioining in the chorus . Bro . VVilliams proposed "The VV . M . " in a short speech . Bro . Wright responded , and said he would at all times be ready to give any assistance he could to the lodge . He then proposed "The Health of Bro . Sir Philip Cunliffe Owen and Bro . H . Tipper , thc Treasurer and Secretary

respectively . " With regard to the former , they all knew Sir Phillip ' s engagements were numerous , and he could not be so often wilh them as he would wish . With respect to Bro Tipper , he said he vas the life and soul of the Lodge of King Solomon , and without Bro . Tipper the lodge would belike champagne—without the fizz—if he might use such an expression in a teetotal lodge ; at any rate , like the play

ot Hamlet without the Ohost , though he was a substantial ghost . Bro . Tipper responded in suitable terms , and explained how much occupied Bro . Sir Philip Owen was with the forthcoming Exhibition , often being at work from seven in the morning till late at night . In his hands the lodge might feel sure the finances were quite safe . With respect to himself , he took great pride in the lodge , being one of its

founders , and felt glad his work gave satisfaction . In submitting "The Officers , " the W . M . thought that Bro . Branthwaite should congratulate himself on having such an able body of assistants . He begged to thank them one and all for the support they had given him as acting Master that day , and called on the J . W . and S . D . to respond . Bros . Williams and Richardson did so in graceful sentences . Before calling upon the Tyler for his toast , the Master asked the brethren to give him any votes they could spare for the Girls' School for the case of Amy Cutbush . The coming election would be her first and last ] chance . She was the daughter of a very old and respected Mason . Bro .

Cutbush was a Life "uovernor of all three Charities , was on the Audit Committee of the Girls' School , had served the office of Steward to the Charities , was Past Master and Treasurer of several lodges , besides being a P . P . G . A . D . C . Herts . He died suddenly last August , leaving a large family , and , owing to the long depression , badly provided for .

majority of his officers were in their places . The lodge having been opened in the First Degree , and the minutes of the last regular meeting read and confirmed , the ballot was then taken for Mr . Albert Wood Bagnall , and he was declared to have been duly elected . Bros . J . Tennant , VV . H . Ream , J . Freeson , S . C , Thompson , C . M . Normanton , and Thomas J . The brethren were called off to refreshment , and on resuming business , Bro . Bagnall , P . M ., took the chair , and initiated his son , Mr . A . VV . Bagnall , into the beautiful mysteries of our noble Order . Great credit is due to Bro . Bagnall , P . M ., for the impressive and excellent manner in

which he performed the ceremony . Bro . Pathos was raised to the Sublime Degree by Bro . Rev . Haines , P . M ., and Bro . Moult by Bro . Mullock , P . M ., in the order named . " Hearty good wishes " having been given by the visiting brethren , the members and visitors—the latter through the kind invitation of thc W . M . —then sat down to the festive board .

The usual Masonic and patriotic toasts were given and heartily responded to . Songs and recitations enlivened the time , and a most agreeable evening was spent . A most gratifying and noble tribute to the value of Freemasonry as a teacher can be found in the Caledonian Lodge , where

Bro . Bagnall , P . M ., sits with his two sons , Bros . Wilfred and Albert Wood Bagnall , and Bro . Roberts , P . M ., who , a few months ago , initiated his son into our ancient Order . No father would do this unless he felt and knew that thc teachings inculcated would make his son a nobler and a better man .

confirmed , a notice of motion was given for the removal of the lodge to the White Swan Hotel , Upper Norwood , its present place of meeting being , in consequence of circumstances connected with its original "home , " only temporarily permitted by dispensation .

VVilson were passed to the Degree
