The Orient Line have added to their fleet for service betsveen this country and Australia a tsvin-scresv steamer of 6500 tons registered , vvith 9 600 horse-power , named the Ophir , this being the first steamer of its build for service betsveen here and the Antipodes . The Queen , accompanied by the Princess Louise , the Princess Beatrice , and the Princess of Leiningen , and attended by the Dowager Lady Churchill drove over on the ioth inst . from Balmoral to Birkhall and visited the Empress Eugenie .

Bro . J . Blundell Maple , M . P ., has purchased Common , svhich svon the Tsvo Thousand , Derby , and St . Leger , from Lord Alington and Bro . Sir Frederick Johnstone , Bart ., for £ 15 , 000 . The Congress of Orientalists , which is declared to have been a great success , brought its labours to a conclusion on the ioth inst . In the evening the savants dined together at the Tivoli , and on the following day many of them paid a visit to Cambridge . It has been decided that next year's Congress shall be held in Spain , under the presidency of Senor Canovas del Castillo .

The match betsveen North and South , vvhich was played last week , terminated in a draw in favour of the North , svhich scored 301 runs in one innings , while South , haying succeeded in compiling only 210 runs in its first innings , had to follow on , and made 240 at its second venture , Grace contributing 54 and 36 , Stoddart 71 , and Ferris 6 7 not out on the South side , and Hall 50 and Ward * u for the North . °

A meeting of the Benevolent and Charity Committee of the Provincial Grand Lodge of the Western Division of Lancashire was held on the nth inst . at the Masonic Hall , Hope-street , Liverpool , under the presidency of Bro . R . Wylie , P . G . D . The minutes of the previous meeting werc read by Bro . W . Goodacre , P . G . Sec , svho called the attention of the brethren to the importance of sending to him as early as possible ail the votes possessed by the

various lodges for the three great Masonic Institutions in London . Although West Lancashire had no candidates for either the Boys' or Girls' Institutions , still at the next elections votes of the brethren in the province should be sent to him , as he could use them to a good purpose in viesv of future elections .
