are actuated by but one feeling in respect to the Queen , her heir ? , and successors . To that of "Thc Provincial Grand Master , Lord Holmesdale , " a warm and flattering reception was accorded , and in response to thnt of " The D . G . M ., tjro . Eastes , antl the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " Bros . Coupland and Pownall replied in eloquent terms , and Bro . Picken then rorc to propose

" Thc Health of the W . M . " He said he hail very great pleasure in rising to propose thc toast . Their Bro . Shaw , who had that day been placed in the chair of the lodge , was , as many of them knew , one of the founders if the lodge , and had been through all the minor offices , ami he , ( Bro . Picken ) could conscientiously say that he did not believe that he had been absent from his duties once

during the whole period of his connection with it . No one , he was sure , but must have seen the great and unceasing interest Bro . Shaw took in the lodge , and now that hc bad reaped the reward nf those services , they wished him every prosperity , and had confidence that he would carry out the duties entrusted to him to thc honour and reputation of the lodge . Bro . Snaw , who was

enthusiastically received , in response , said hc thanked them most sincerely ft r the kind and cordial manner in which they had drunk his health . He coultl assure them that that evening was one of the proudest of his life . He should always remember with pride and anxiety the day he was placed in that chair ; pride because it WKS an object worthy of the highest ambition of his Masonic life ,

and anxietv because he felt the heavy responsibilities laid upot . him . It was a difficult task to carry out the duties attached to it so as to please every one , and at thc same time look to the efficitney of its officers ami its general welfare , hut he would promise to do hisb-stin both cases , and asked them to give him every assistance in furthering the interests of the lodge in every way , antl then he should

look forward to a year of harmony and brotherly love . The next toast was that of " Thc Past Masters of and belonging to the Lodge , " and , in putting it , the W . M . especially complimented Bro . M ., the duty of responding fell into his hands , but , being a very young Past

Master , he hardly knew what to say . They had their esteemed Past Master , Bro . Pownall , the first Master of the lodge ; present , and they all knew how eloquent he was ; he should , therefore , leave the toast in his hands to respond to . Frjr himself , he should stand by the W . M . as his predecessors had stood by him . Bro . Pownall then , in a lengthy and eloquent address , spoke of the rise and

progress of the lodge since its consecration four years ago , when upwards of 150 brethren assembled to see the lodge launched upon its eventful career . It was a great source of pride to him to have been its first Master . It was intended to be a home for the military brethren in Woolwich , and had well fulfilled the intention of its founders , as it was continually receiving brethren from all parts of the

world , lie laid a great ileal of the success that had attended it to Bros . W . Weston , Spinks , Picken , Shaw , Deeves , and others , and said their effoits hatl mad e it one of the first in Ihe province . He concluded b y trusting to be long spared to come among them , anil to hold , as he trusted he still held , thc same affectionate regard in their hearts that they had upon so many occasions evinced towards him . Trie he « toast wai that of "The Visitor's , " and

Bros . Hutton , Woodley , and Lloyd responded . Bro . Picken then , by the permission of the W . M ., rose to propose the toast of "Absent Brethren , " and , ia so doing , regretted the absence from among them that night of Bro . Past Master G . S l inks , who wis now ia Zululand , and fighting the battles oi his country against a savage and merciless foe . None ol them would ever forget Lie year

that that brother was at the head of the lodge , or the magnificent manner in which he installed him ( Bro . Picken ) into the chair . He trusted he nvght be spared through the dangers of his position , which , after ali , WAS what every Biitish soldier loved to face for his Queen an 1 country ; and that hc might be spared to return home to them , and again take bis seat among the Past Masters of

the lodge . The toast of " The Officers " followed , and then , after Bro . Ben Norman hatl given the Tyler ' s least , antl Bro . progress of the lodge since its consecration four years ago , when upwards of 150 brethren assembled to see the lodge launched upon its eventful career .
