Royal Naval Lodge , No . 59 . INSTALLATION OF BRO . W . BANISTER ABBOTT . The meeting of this old lodge for the installation of Bro . W . Banister Abbott was held at Freemasons' Hall , on Monday , the 14 th inst ., when the following members and visitine brethren were present : Bros . W . B . Abbott , W . M . ; C . Coxen , J . Owing to the regrettable indisposition of Bro . H . A . Tobias , I . P . M ., the ceremony of installation was intrusted to the capable hands of Bro . Stimpson , P . M . and Sec , who performed this duty with his accustomed ability and verve . Lodge adjourned shortly alter six o clock to the Holborn Restaurant , where ^ n hour later dinner was served , a beautiful buttonhole being placed by the plate of each guest . The usual loyal toasts of "The Queen " and "The M . W . G . M ., " having been

given and heartily responded to , The W . M . then proposed the toast of "The M . W . Pro G . M ., the Deputy G . M ., and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " coupling with it the name of Bro . Daniel Mayer , S . G . D ., as the representative of the Grand Officers . ' This popular brother , in rising to respond as the only G . Officer present , regretted

Royal Arch.

the unavoidable absence of Bro . H . A . Tobias , P . G . Std . Br ., through illness , said that the standing of G . Officers was not quite the sinecure it was supposed to be , as no one took greater interest in the welfare of the Craft and individual lodges than a Grand Officer . Personally speaking , he took a very great interest in the Royal Naval Lodge , and he esteemed it an especial honour that it should fall to him to give the toast of " Bro . Banister Abbott , " who , although he had been abroad for several years , had the interests of his mother lodge at heart , and now occupied the proud position of its Master .

The W . M ., in his reply , thanked Bro . Daniel Mayer for his kind reference to him , and told how for 14 years he had looked forward to occupying the position he did on this evening , and promised to do his best for the lodge in the years to come if spared by the Almighty . In proceeding to give the toast of " Bro . R . H . Stimpson , P . M ., " who had so ably stepped into the breach caused by the illness of Bro . Tobias , and acted as his Installing Master , the W . M . gave him " Hearty good wishes , " and trusted he might be spared for many years to come .

Bro . Stimpson , P . M ., in response , thanked the brethren for the way they had received the toast , and said that whenever it was required of him he always tried to do his best , and hoped he might have the opportunity and pleasure for a long time in the future . In giving "The Initiate , " the W . M . remarked that this was the toast of the evening . No institutions , and especially Masonic ones , can progress unless there is new blood brought into it , and judging by the way Bro . Baxter went through the ordeal

of his initiation , he had every likelihood ot becoming a good Mason . Bro . Baxter , in reply , begged to be excused from keeping the brethren any length of time listening to him , as he had not been initiated into the mysteries of speechmaking , and then immediately proceeded to give with his beautiful voice "Ca the cattle home "—a very unusual occurrence on the part of an initiate , and an evidence of considerable sang froid . For "The Visitors" several visiting brethren suitably replied on behalf of theic respective lodges .

Bro . Salmon ( Mayor of Kingston ) , remarking on the good working now existing in most lodges , thanked the members of the lodge for royally and loyally receiving him , and observed that they would b : brethren indeed if they carried out the obligations of the ritual . Bro . Stimpson , in rising a second time , and on this occasion to respond for " The Past Masters , " said on behalf of himself , as Secretary , and Bro . J . Duncan , Treasurer , who was away ill , he thanked the W . M . for electing him , for the 13 th time , Secretary of the lodge , and hoped he would still continue to earn the approval and appreciation of the brethren . The Tyler ' s toast then put " finis " to a very pleasant evening .

faithful and devoted service to Freemasonry in general , and to the Spencer Walpole Lodge in particular , and trusted Bro . Newby would long live to wear it , to which Bro . Newby suitably replied . Mr . Harry Wood contributed several solos on the violin ; Mr . J . T . Wood a solo on the cornet ; and songs were given by Messrs . Cowley , Heron , T . E . Clague , Dawson , Mackenzie , Rylance , Waters , and H . T . Rylance ; a duet by Messrs . Cowley and J . T . Wood ; and recitations by Messrs . A . E . Prescott and W . S . Weigh . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were heartily drunk .

We should not omit to say that the tables for the banquet were most beautifully decorated with plants , flowers , mistletoe , and other floral emblems , amongst which were a large display of some fine specimens of the different varieties of chrysanthemums , which were the kindly gifts of Masonic friends , and which added greatly to the charm and delight of the evening's proceedings . After the toast list had been completed , the closing one—the Tyler ' s toast—was

given by Bro . H . T . Rylance , P . M ., P . J . G . D ., and the singing of " Auld Lang Syne " and the National Anthem brought the interesting proceedings to a close . Bro . Rowland is manager of the bookbinding department of Messrs . Brown and Son , Limited , and specimens of his work have been a striking feature in the annual exhibition of the Isle of Man Fine Arts Guild , where he has taken the highest award offered on each occasion that he has exhibited . He has held the office of Secretary for two consecutive years with marked ablity , represents the Spencer Walpole on the Prov . G . Lodge as Prov . G . Stwd ., and the interest he has taken in the several offices of the

lodge which he has filled leads every member to expect that he will make an excellent W . M ., and that the affairs of the lodge will prosper under his guidance . Too much praise cannot be given to Bro . Newby , the I . P . M . ; he has occupied the chair for two successive years with the greatest ability , and the perfect manner in which he has conducted the ceremonies , and the conscientious way in which he performed his many duties has earned for him the esteem , not only of his own lodge , but of every Mason who has been brought into contact with him . That the new century may be full of brightness and prosperity for himself and his family is the sincere wish of every brother . At the first lodge under the new W . M . a prominent Town Councillor is down for initiation .
