J . Ansell were next initiated into Freemasonry by the W . M . Bro . John Anley , jun ., I . P . M ., was presented
with a Past Master ' s jewel in recognition of his efficient services in the chair . For the 23 rd year Bro . George Everett , P . M ., P . G . Treas ., Treasurer , had the pleasure of proposing a grant from the lodge funds to one of the Charitable Institutions . This year was the turn of the Boys' Institution , which was voted 25 guineas , to be placed on the W . M . 's list as Steward . The Secretary announced the receipt of two copies of certificates formerly used by the lodge , which had been kindly sent by Bro . H . Sadler , Sub-Librarian . These were thankfully received by the lodge , and thanks voted to the donor . The
wording on these certificates reads— " We do hereby certify that Bro . ¦ is a regular registered Master Mason in Lodge No . 234 , and has , during his stay amongst us , behaved himself as became an honest brother . " The Audit report was adopted , and lodge was closed . After a well-served banquet the customary toasts were proceeded with . Bro . G . Everett , P . G . Treas ., replied for " The Grand Officers , " and thanked the
W . M . for the felicitous terms used in proposing it . The brethren were aware it was an important toast , comprising a large number of distingnished brethren who had performed their duties well . It was only fitting he should allude to the sad loss the Craft had sustained by the death of Rev . C . J . Martyn , P . G . Chap . Although a clergyman he was one of the merriest souls they could meet in Freemasonry . His after-dinner speeches always delighted them , and he was in all respects a thorough man and a thorough Mason .
Bro . John Anley , jun ., I . P . M ., proposed "TheW . Master , " and said the toast required no words to recommend it . From the manner in which the W . M . rendered the initiation ceremony they knew they had an excellent Master for the coming year . Bro . Smith only wanted sufficient work to enable him to give the three ceremonies at each meeting . Bro . T . S . Smith , W . M ., said he hardly knew how to respond , although he had heard a similar toast responded to on many occasions . In the good old times when he used to sit in the S . or W . he was always amongst convivial fellows . He had now to
thank the I . P . M . for the cordial manner in which he had proposed the toast , and the brethren for their cordial reception . He only hoped that during his year the officers appointed by him would do their best to make his year a success , to be punctual in their attendance , and thus get through the agenda by the time appointed . He had always tried to do the best he could for the lodge , and should continue to do so as long as he was a member . Bro . W . J . Ansell , replying for "The Initiates , " said he was proud to be a member of their lodge . He was impressed with the ceremony , and the eloquent way in which
the service was rendered . He would do all he could to keep up the reputation of the lodge , and hoped never to forfeit the confidence extended to him that evening . Bros . White , Cranfield , and Bolton also replied . Bro . J . M . McLeod , P . G . S . B ., on behalf of " The Masonic Charities , " returned thanks for the generous vote in the lodge towards the W . M . ' s list . Starting a new year they were happy in the knowledge that the Masonic Charities in the past year had not lost anything , but had gained . It was gratifying to find the brethren contributing so
generously , and it was his first duty to acknowledge that . Starting with six boys 100 years ago they now numbered 291 , which was increased to 293 boys by the generous motion proposed by Bro . Everett to admit two boys without election whose fathers had died in the service of their country . The brethren would therefore recognise that they had done their little share in carrying on the great work of Empire . Over 2500 boys had been educated in the Institution , and he was happy to see in the room some brethren who had passed through that School . The School was removing to another sphere
where they could have far more air . Happily they had the money to build with , and in two years they hoped to have the new building ready . The liberal Board of Management endeavoured to do its duty to the School and to the Craft , and the education was second to none of any school of a like kind in the country . He had only to ask them , in that good old lodge which had done so much in the past for the Boys , to do as they
had always done—support their W . M . They had done this in the past without hope of reward , although they did not know when bad times might fall upon any of them . Bro . J . T . Davies , P . M ., responded for "The Visitors , " and said he had peculiar pleasure in seeing the W . M . in the chair of that ancient lodge . They were for many years workers in a lodge of instruction , the W . M . as Secretary , and himself as Preceptor .
Bro . R . S . Chandler , P . M . 2700 , acknowledged his personal indebtedness to the Boys' School in conjunction with two other brethren sitting near him . The Old Masonians Association was also indebted to several members of this lodge for kindness in the past . Bro . Leader , P . M ., also expressed his pleasure in attending as a visitor . " Installing Master and Past Masters , " was cordially given and responded to , and was followed by " The Officers . "
Bro . R . B . Hopkins , Org ., had provided an excellent musical entertainment and himself contributed several items on the silver bells in his own inimitable manner . His talented daughter—Miss Annie Hopkins—rendered a couple of songs in an artistic and pleasing manner . Miss Marie Tansley , and Bros . Barry Lmdon , Walter Grace , J . W . Sidney , and Will Edwards also assisted in a successful programme .

M . then appointed and invested his officers , and , in addition to a definition of duty , had some apt words for
each of them . The three charges were then delivered bv Bro . F . Piggott . The following are the officers of the lodge for the year : Bros . William James , W . M . ; F . J . Moden , P . S . G . Moden , the outgoing W . M ., on behalf of the lodge , by the Deputy Provincial Grand Master , who said it afforded him great pleasure to make the presentation after he had seen the work Bro . Moden could do ; and he hoped the I . P . M . would live many years to wear and appreciate the jewel . Bro . F . J . Moden thanked the Deputy P . G . M . for the kind manner in which he had made the presentation , and also the brethren of the lodge for their
kindness in providing the jewel , which he hoped to wear for many years amongst them . The Secretary read a letter from the Prov . G . M ., Bro . Colonel R . T . Caldwell , who regretted that in consequence of previous engagements he was unable this year to have the pleasure of accepting the kind invitation of the W . M ., Wardens , and brethren of the Scientific Lodge , No . SS , for that evening . He sent " Hearty good wishes " to each member of the lodge for his happiness and prosperity during the year which had just begun , and to the W . M . elect for a happy and successful year of office .
" Hearty good wishes " having been tendered on behalf of the visiting brethren , who numbered about 40 , the lodge was closed , and the brethren presently sat down to banquet . In commencing the toast list , the W . M . declared himself to be a man of brevityfor that occasion at any rate—and he literally fulfilled his description . At the same time , he fully atoned for brief speeches by providing an able glee party , consisting of Messrs . A . R . Benten , W . Driver , B . Baldwin Bales , and G . R . James , whose efforts during the
evening were highly appreciated . The toast of " The Grand Officers of England " was acknowledged by Bro . G . J . McKay , who gave a hearty greeting to the brethren of No . 8 S . He also referred to the death of Bro . Rev . C . J . Martyn , P . G . Chaplain of England , and spoke of his genial manner and the good advice he was wont to give in Grand Lodge . The Province of Suffolk , too , would feel the loss especially . No Grand Officer had made a better attendance or taken more interest in Masonry than the late Bro . Martyn . In conclusionthe
, speaker complimented Bro . Piggott upon hiswork in connection with the installation ceremony . " The Health of the Prov . Grand Master" was given from the chair , the W . M , explaining that Col . Caldwell was prevented by another engagement from attending ; but those who knew him knew how genial and good he was , and what great interest he had in Masonry .
, J v ( - - nexl submitted " The Health of the Deputy Prov . G . M . and the rest of the Prov . Grand Officers . " The Deputy Prov . G . Master , in responding , thanked Bro . McKay for his kind words in reference to the late Bro . Rev . C . J . Martyn , and said that he personally had lost one of his oldest and dearest and best Masonic friends . They would all express sympathy with the Province of Suffolk ; as to the toast , he was sorry that the Prov . G . Master was unable to be present . He must congratulate the W . M . upon nresidin ? over
? ° ? J ? a , ge ' He was also £ Iad to have had the opportunity of hearing the I . P . M . do work . It had been a very instructive meeting altogether . Several fresh points of light had been thrown on Freemasonry . Bro . Piggott had reminded them that this lodge , No . SS , was 147 years old . From this they could view the progress pf Masonry . The number of lodges now approached 3000 , and it was not at all unlikely that some of them would live to see 4000 turned . This province , too , had had its share of the progress , whilst they could also boast that no province was more contented .
Bro . W . P . Spalding , P . M ., P . S . G . W ., also acknowledged the toast , and said that Hie compliment which had been paid to the lodge in appointing him to the rank of S . W . in the province was one which the lodge thoroughly appreciated , and one which he personally appreciated as highly as any honour he had received in Freemasonry . He also referred to the great loss which the Craft had sustained by the death of the genial Bro . Martyn , whose kindly good nature made him welcome in any province in the kingdom .
. Bro . F . J . Moden , I . P . M ., proposed "The Health of the Worshipful Master , and felt sure that Bro . James ( who was enthusiastic in Masonry ) would bring credit on the lodge which had placed him in that position . The W . M . replied that he would try to do his duty in the chair , and he hoped that he should give them satisfaction . Bro . Oliver Papworth , P . M ., Prov . G . Sec , gave " The Visitors , " of whom they had a fine muster . The lodge was very proud to receive them , and gave them a hearty welcome .
, „ , 7 *!? toast r was responded to by Bros . G . F . Knowles , W . M . 441 ; J . S . Johnson , W . M . SOQ ; R H . Adie , W . M . 1492 ; R . T . Scarr , P . M . 2136 ; ifc . G . Willson ( New Zealand ) , and Dr . J . R . Green ; and the W . M . was wished a happy and prosperous year of office . e The W . M . proposed " The Installing Master and the Past Masters . " So far as he could judge , Bro . Moden seemed to do his work in an admirable manner , and Bro . 1 iggott s work could not be too highly appreciated . He was particularly gratified to see their venerable friend Bro . Nichols there , and also Bro . Pryer . who initiated him , and Bro . Chaplin , who made him I . G .
c .. . . ' ' Moden sa ' d the p ast Masters had proved themselves to be the backbone of the lodge . Bro . F . Piggott sincerely regretted the cause which led to his delivering the charges , namely , the indisposition of their esteemed Bro . J . H . Moyes . Whatever he had been able to do in the Craft was mainly due to his father in Freemasonry , Bro . B . Chennell . Bro . U J . M'Kay proposed "The Masonic Charities . " and congratulated the
Province ot Cambridgeshire on what it had done for thow Institutions . Tneir good work had been due to the Herculean efforts of the Prov . G . Secretary , which only those who worked with Bro . Papworth could sufficiently appreciate . Bro . Oliver Papworth responded . The Tyler ' s toast terminated a most successful gathering .

The number of lodges now approached 3000 , and it was not at all unlikely that some of them would live to see 4000 turned . This province , too , had had its share of the progress , whilst they could also boast that no province was more contented .
Bro . W . P . Spalding , P . M ., P . S . G . W ., also acknowledged the toast , and said that Hie compliment which had been paid to the lodge in appointing him to the rank of S . . Bro . F . J . Moden , I . P . M ., proposed "The Health of the Worshipful Master , and felt sure that Bro . James ( who was enthusiastic in Masonry ) would bring credit on the lodge which had placed him in that position . The W .
