and then by Lord Justice Fitzgibbon . The latter in his congratulations with respect of the improvements , and the admirable manner in which the drill could now be conducted through the liberality of the Centenary Stewards , drew attention to the fact that the Dublin Freemasons' Girls' School ( of which Committee

he is one of the most active and energetic members ) would celebrate their Centenary next year . Miss Davis , the Head Governess , was heartily congratulated upon the perfection to which she had brought the children in their exercises . The visitors were afterwards conducted round the premises by the Prefects and Cambridge girls , and

after a modest cup of tea with Miss Buck , the courteous Matron , retired , all expressing themselves extremely p leased with their visit and everything they had seen . An Australian Veteran At Rest.

AN AUSTRALIAN VETERAN AT REST .

Close upon 40 years ago , when the gold discovery was at its fever height in the then young colony of Victoria , there arrived in Melbourne , amongst other Craftsmen , Bro . Henry Wallace Lowry , a native of the north of Ireland , but initiated into Masonry in Liverpool . He had attained the ranks of P . M . and P . Z .,

besides being a member of the Templar Order , prior to emigrating to the far distant clime south of the line . Freemasonry , at that period , was naturally in a very humble , not to say disorganised state ; but the advent of men of energy and experience like the veteran who passed to his rest only a week ago , very soon brought about a new order of things , and from that time down

to a very few months since , Bro . Lowry laboured hard and unceasingly in the quarries . He vvas speedily looked upon as the one guide , philosopher , and friend of the Craft in Victoria , more especially that he had determined to make the metropolis—now a city of halfa-million inhabitants—his home . In Craft Masonry he identified himself more or less with the three British

Constitutions , and in a very few years was honoured with the rank of District Senior Grand Warden , E . C . Next we have him District Grand Secretary , S . C , till the formation of the United Grand Lodge of Victoria , and likewise Dist . G . Treas ., E . C . He was the pioneer of the Mark Degree in Victoria , and a founder of the

oldest lodge , No . 47 , while up to his death he held the position of Provincial ( now District ) Grand Master of Victoria . As a Knight Templar , for many years the colony had been ruled by the deceased frater , and to this may be added P . M . W . S . of the A . A . S . C . In other walks of Masonic life Bro . Lowry was long

identified with the Freemasons' Charitable Institutions of Victoria as Treasurer , and with the old Masonic Hall Company as Secretary . Another notable event in the history of his Australian career may be cited , namely , the presentation to him in 1 S 76 by the combined English , Irish , and Scottish Craft , of a purse of

500 sovs . as a token of the invaluable services rendered to Masonry by him in the country of his adoption . Finally , on the inauguration of the Grand Lodge of Victoria , he received the high rank of Past Deputy Grand Master . He was simple and unobtrusive in his manners and ways , and one of the truest and freest

exponents of the most distinguishing characteristic of a Freemason ' s heart . Departing in the possession of the foregoing record , it would be almost superfluous to say that the Grand Lodge of Victoria fittingly took the initiative in according the old man the last sad token of respect and esteem . A special communication of the Grand Lodge was summoned , presided over by the

Grand Master , Sir W . J . Clarke , Bart ., and the procession to the Melbourne General Cemetery numbered some hundreds , with the thermometer closely upon 150 deg . in the sun . Bro . Lowry had attained the ripe old age of 82 . One of the latest portraits of him happily adorns the walls of Freemasons' Hall , along with other departed rulers in the Craft . —Melbourne , Feb . g .
