Presentation To Bro. Baker.

PRESENTATION TO BRO . BAKER .

There was a well-attended emergency meeting of the Pantiles Lodge at the Pump Room , Tunbridge Wells , on Wednesday , the Sth inst ., Bro . Tom R yder , W . M ., in the chair , when Bros . L . B . Page and T . Harris were raised , and Bros . E . B . Wall and T .

Corringham were passed . Afterwards the brethren met at the Hotel Wellington , where Host Bro . John Brab y had provided one of his first-class suppers , to which over 30 sat down , including several visitors from local and London lodges . In the course of the post-prandial proceedings the

W . M . referred to the attendance of Bro . Wall at the lodge , and proposed that a vote of sympathy and condolence should be sent to him in consequence of the sad bereavement he had lately passed through . The death of his brother-in-law was of a very tragic character ( this was the gentleman who , while taking part

in a Roman Catholic service , fell down dead in the church ) . The widow was the only sister , and in fact the only near relative of Bro . Wall , who was very much prostrated . The vote of condolence and sympathy having been unanimously carried , the W . M . said he had next a

very pleasing task to perform . As the brethren were aware , one of their late officers , Bro . T . Baker , was about to leave the town , and in consequence had been prevented from holding the chair , to which position he vvould otherwise have been entitled . Several of the brethren , and particularl y the officers , had felt that

his leaving the town would be a fitting opportunity to present him with a memento of his connection with the Pantiles Lodge . The Worshipful Master then handed to Bro . Baker a very handsomely framed and illuminated address , which had been very neatly engrossed b y the Secretary

Bro . Rufus Stevenson , P . M . The address stated that the oflicers and members desired to express their regret at his having decided to leave the borough . He had carried out the duties of Junior and Senior Warden to their entire satisfaction , and they hoped at some future date he vvould become Worshi pful Master , as he had

gained their respect and esteem in his Masonic duties . In handing Bro . Baker the framed address , together with a very handsome gold Masonic charm , the VV . M . hoped he would live long to look at the one and wear the other ; the members , too , wished him heartil y long

life , happiness , and prosperity . Bro . T . BAKEK , who was loudly cheered on rising , said he had been taken altogether by surprise , for that presentation was the last thing he should have thought of . He desired to thank the W . M . and the brethren

for their very kind expressions , and the most cordh ] reception they had given him . He could assure them he should place more value upon the address than ativ thing else he possessed . It was true he had tried to do his duty Masonically , and he should hope at no distant date to revisit Tunbridge Wells , and become W . Nf . r

the Pantiles Lodge , of which he was one of the founders His departure from Tunbridge Wells would be attended with feelings of very great regret on his part for he had spent in the town the greater portion of his life . Jj „ could assure them he accepted the presentation with grateful thanks .

Royal Masonic Institution For Boys.

ROYAL MASONIC INSTITUTION FOR BOYS .

The following appeared in our Second Edition last week : The Quarterly Court of the Subscribers and Governors of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys was held on Friday , ioth inst ., at Freemasons ' Tavern . Bro . Richard Eve , Past Grand Treasurer , Patron of the

Institution , presided , and there were present at the Chairman ' s table Bros . Le Feuvre , Scurrah , Everett Attenborough , Bodenham , and others . There was a large attendance of members . After Bro . J . MORRISON MCLEOD ( Secretary ) had read the notice convening the meeting , the minutes of

the Quarterly Court of Jan . 30 th , 1891 ( which were confirmed ) , the minutes of the Council of Saturday Feb . 2 , March 7 , and April 4 , were read for information . Bro . SCURRAH moved , and Bro . BURGESS seconded that the Final Report of the Provisional Management Committee be taken as read , which motion was agreed to . This report appeared in the Freemason on the 4 th

inst . Bro . J OSEPH STOREY moved the thanks of the meeting to the Provisional Committee for their services , which had been of so great benefit to the Institution . Bro . J AMES STEVENS seconded .

The motion was carried . On the motion for the adoption of the report ( and before it was put to the meeting ) a B ROTHER objected to the raising of the Secretary ' s salary as recommended by the report , as being too soon—within 12 months of his appointment . ^' 300 was considered sufficient

when he was appointed . At the same time he must not be understood as at all deteriorating the services of Bro . McLeod . There was no seconder of the amendment , which was that the report be adopted with the exception of

the paragraph recommending that the Secretary s salary be raised to ^ 400 a year . The motion for the adoption of the report was then put and carried . The next business was a motion of Bro . J SLYMAN , P . P . G . D . West Lancashire , Vice-Pres : —

" That in accordance with Law XL , the brethren who served on either the Investigation Committee or the Provisional Management Committee , and thereby rendered eminent and special service to the Institution , be elected honorary Vice-Presidents and have the same privileges as if qualified under Law X ., in addition to their present status as subscribers to the Institution . "

The CHAIRMAN said that Bro . Slyman vvould by his motion be conferring an honour on no brother whatever , because all who were included in his motion were really Vice-Presidents at the present time Under those circumstances he asked him not to go

on with it . Bro . SLYMAN said if the Chairman assured him lhat it was the unanimous wish of the Committee that this resolution should not be brought forward , he would be the last person in the world to press it . The CHAIRMAN said he could not pledge himself that the

it vvas the unanimous wish , but he could say it was general desire . Bro . SLYMAN observed that it was his op inion that the brethren of the Committee had rendered as valuable services to the Institution as anyone could possibly render , and if the brethren generally had the power to . \_ . uui _ , i , anu 11 LIIV . ult . iiucu gdiciaiiy ua . v __ * .. ^ r- r lost 0

grant any recognition , no opportunity should be ; doing so . There were no worthier brethren than Committee . ., The CHAIRMAN said they were quite satisfied w'tn the vote of thanks carried by the adoption of report . ( Cheers . ) , Bro . CUMBERLAND , after a few remarks , withdrew

following motion : "That the case of Reginald Allan Bourdeaux , accep ' ^ as a candidate for the April election , and No . 33 " candidates , be struck out of the list , as since his nam ceat placed thereon his mother has been appointed to an om a salary of £ 200 per annum . " On the motion of Bro . W . A . SCURRAH , seconded / Bro . GEORGE EVERETT , Bro . George Plucknett *

unanimously re-elected Treasurer . jjC Bro . J . E . LE FEUVRE moved that Bro . . hat elected Treasurer of the Sustentation Fund , saying 1 , ^ very few brethren had done more for the Institu ^ than Bro . Eve . He thought it would be P ^ ^ , proper compliment to a brother who had done so n

for the Institution to elect him to this office . Bro . STANLEY J . ATTENBOROUGH seconded . The motion was carried . re \ n The CHAIRMAN : Brethren , I have much p leas f haV 6 accepting the position , and I hope you will neve cause to regret having elected me .

Jj „ could assure them he accepted the presentation with grateful thanks .

when he was appointed .
