Shurmur , Stwds . ; and Vtny , Tyler . The usual addresses were delivered by the Installing Master , Bro . L . Stean , P . M . Ballot having been succtsslully taken for Mr . S . C Kaulman as a candidate for initiation , he was regularly initiated into Freemasonry , after which

Bro . Julius Ungar was raised to the Degree of Master Mason by Bro . Stean , P . M . A handsome P . M . ' s jewel was presented to Bio . Drysdale , I . P . M ., for his efficient services in the chair during the past year . The report of the Audit Committee was received and adopted , and there being no further business for transaction , the lodge was closed in due form .

The brethren having partaken of an excellent banquet , the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were honoured in a hearty and enthusiastic manner . "The Health of the W . M . " was proposed by Bro . Drysdale , I . P . M ., who expressed the pleasure it affordedhim to introduce the toast to the notice of the brethren . They were all present in the lodge room and heard the manner

in which Bro . Frank Matthews performed the duties of VV . M ., and would therefore agree with him that the present occupant of the chair was one who would prove himself a good W . M . He ( the l . P . M . ) listened with delight to that working , although during the past year he was not able to undertake the duties Bro . Matthews , W . M ., had undertaken on the present occasion . If their W . M . continued

in the same path in which he had started , there was no doubt the lodge would have a successful year of office under his guidance . He was convinced that the W . M . would , as far as lay in his power , curtail the expenses of the lodge , which was a great matter for the consideration of all brethren installed into the chair . With these few remarks , he asked the brethren to drink with heartiness and sincerity

to the health of Bro . Frank Matthews , W . M . Bro . Frank Matthews , W . M ., said he felt somewhat diffident in responding to this toast , after the very kind remarks of the l . P . M . He wished to reiterate the few words he used in the lodge room , and assure the brethren that it was through no fault of Bro . Drysdale ' sthat he had not undertaken all the duties of W . M . during the past

year . He thanked the brethren very heartily lor the kind expressions he had heard around him , and which had gone deep into his heart . It would be his endeavour to save the lodge from needless expense , and this was a point to which he should pay special attention . For the kind words of the I . P . M ., and the heartiness with which the toast had been received , he returned sincere thanks .

Ihe W . M . then gave "The Installing Master , " and said the toast deserved more lustre than he could give it . On the present occasion they had had an exemplification of the extent to which the lodge was indebted to the P . M . ' s . Bro . Walker , P . M ., who was to have performed the installation ceremony was tiken suddenly ill , and was obliged to return home , and the P . M . who intended acting as D . C was also

indisposed , and was not able to render great assistance to the Installing Master . The members were indebted to the P . M . ' s for a good deal of work , and he hoped they would continue to render such efficient services . Bro . L . Stean , P . M ., the Installing Master , was the oldest member , and laiher of the lodge , and initiated him ( the W . M . ) into Freemasonry . Bro . Stean had rendered valuable service by

kindly undertaking the installation ceremony , and the brethren present would receive the toast of his health with enthusiasm . Bro . L . Stean , P . M ., sincerely thanked the W . M . and brethren for the manner in which the tuast had been given and received . He assured them that aouut an hour before he

entered the lodge he was not aware that Bro . Walker , P . M ., was unfortunately ill , and , being out of practice for some short time , he felt somewhat diffident in undertaking the installation ceremony . However , knowing the lodge looked up to him in difficulties and dangers , he came down and had done the best he could . As he was in his 80 th year , he could not do as he would have done some 30 or 40 years

Craft Masonry.

ago . It always afforded him pleasure not only in this , but also in other lodges , to render any assistance in his power . He had devoted 56 years of his life to Masonry , having regarded it as his religion . There was not more in any religious code than there was in true Masonic duty—duty to God and man , combined with the principles of Charity . Seeing those great and good principles combined , he

thought he could not do better than give up everything else , and he was proud at having done so . Thtir Masonic Institutions ware a credit to one and all , and the recipients were as happy as it was possible to make them on this side of the grave . He did not know if he should be with them for many years , but while he could render any service , they wjuld never find him wanting . This lodge was one

of his last children , for he was one of the founders and was thankful to see it prosper as it had done . Small as the lodge was , and short as the time had been since its formation , the money it had subscribed to the Charities would stand comparison with very many lodges . He hoped it would continue to prosper for many years , and when he was gone , he had no doubt a brother would be found to

take his place , and evince the same interest in the welfare of their lodge . Bro . Barr , P . M ., responded for " The Past Masters , " and said every member of that body was anxious to do his duty to the best of his ability . The members were agreed that they had displayed some ability in the working of the lodge . With the exception of Bro . Walker , who was

unfortunately ill , all the P . M . 's were present . As far as the position of Masonry was concerned , that had been given a good account of by Bro . Stean , P . M . He was quite prepared to admit that Masonry was a religion in itself , for there was no dictate like it . Masonry was not too exacting , for it only asked a brother to do that which was possible , and if everyone acted as a true Mason then

the world would rise to the happy millenium . Un his own behalf , and on the part of the other P . M . ' s , he trusted Bro . Stean would be spared for many years to render valuable assistance . He thanked the VV . M . and brethren for the reception given the toast . "The Initiate" having been given , and suitably responded to by Bro . Kaufman , the W . M . proposed "The

Masonic Charities , " and referring to the fact that he intended serving as Steward for the Girls' School , appealed to the members to support him , and make his list worthy of their lodge . Bro . Thos . Clark , P . M ., on behalf of "The Visitors , " thanked the W . M . for the kind terms in which he had proposed the toast , and the members for the hearty recept on

accorded it . He also desired to thank them for the noble entertainment provided for the visiting brethren , both in the lodge room and at the banquet table . He was pleased to see the W . M . surrounded by a number of Past Masters who had distinguished themselves in the past , and , personally , he felt pleased to be in the company of such brethren . The fact that Bro . Stean , P . M ., had been 56

years in the Order should be an incentive to those who were younger to follow in his footsteps , so that at a similar age they might be as much respected and esteemed . He was delighted to have had the opportunity of visiting them and of witnessing the good work that was being done . The members were to be congratulated on the choice they had made in electing Bro . Frank Matthews to the chair , for

under his rule a happy and successful year was ensured . On behalf of the visitors he again thanked them for their hospitality and kindness , which had enabled them to spend a pleasant and profitable evening . "The 1 ' reasurer and Secretary" was next given , and appropriately ^ replied to by Bros . W . H . Brand , P . M ., Treas ., and C . F . Barham , P . M ., Sec .

" The Officers having been similarly honoured , the Tyler's toast closed the proceedings . During the evening several brethren rendered some excellent songs and recitations , including Bro . Pennington , who , by special request , gave " The Charge of the Light Brigade" in his well known inimitable manner . The humorous element was well supported by Mr . Gold .

ST . AMBROSE LODGE ( No . 1891 ) . —The installation meeting of this lodge , founded by , or through the instrumentality of our illustrious Prelate the Rev . Ambrose W . Hall , P . M . and P . G . C , was held on St . Ambrose Day , Wednesday , the 7 th inst ., being a moveable Feast Day , at the Barons Court Hotel , West Kensington , when a goodly assemblage of the brethren and visitors

were present . And we may say without fear of contradiction , heard the rendering by Bro . Dr . F . E . Pocock , P . M ., of some portion of the ritual of Freemasonry , including the installation ceremony , worked with a correctness which delighted the ear of the listener , as well as striking the attentive student in Freemasonry with awe and reverence to think that such a beautiful ceremony could emanate from the

lips of one man , the impression left on the mind that there is in Freemasonry much more than a mere name . Thus our worthy Bro . J no . W . Morley , W . M . elect , was installed in the chair of King Solomon by Bro . Dr . F . E . Pocock , with the usual charges , exhortations , and salutes . The newly-installed Master proceeded to invest his officers in the following order , giving each in their respective positions a

word of admonition , supplemented by an additional exhortation from the Installing Master . Tbe customary P . M . ' s jewel was presented to Bro . Ludwig Lichtivitz , I . P . M ., with a few well chosen words by the W . M ., who also invested Bros . P . Skar , S . W . ; P . P . Perry , J . W . ; W . H . Smith , Treas . ; Thos . Holland , Sec . ; F . W . Buxton , i . D . ; VV . bC . Smth , jun ., J . D . ; J . C Conway , I . G . ;

VV . Windsor , Org . ; C . J . Foakes , P . M ., D . C . ; J . F . H . Taylor , Asst . D . C . ; H . J . Rose and R . Gibbs , Stwds . ; and R . Potter , Tyler . The addresses to the three chairs were given , followed by a few communications and propositions of new members . After the " Hearty good wishes " of the visitors , the lodge was closed in due form . The brethren then retired to the banqueting hall , where

they sat down to a banquet served up with true Masonic promptness , and with all sumptuous attributes perfectly harmonising with the refined taste of the worthy host , Bro . VV . H . Harris and his Maitre d'Hotel , together with the good selection of his working staff . But the wines were simplv delicious and of the choicest brands

characterised by rich , excellent flavour and good condition , all of which were duly appreciated and extolled by the brethren and visitors , foremost of whom were Bros . Walter , P . M . 1767 , and P . P . J . G . D . Middx . ; VV . H . Toten , P . M , 742 ; Larner , P . M , 85 S ; W . C . Williams , VV . M . 865 F . Arnold , Stwd . 1624 ; Hutchinson . J . D . 1234

Union , and was replied to by the brethren who had the good firiune tube S' > welcomed . Bro . Reade contributed much to the enjoyment of the evening by his sympathetic rendering of " In happy moments , " "My lady ' s garden , " "Badge of love , " and " When other lips . " Bro . Conrath gave "The three beggars " with excellent effect . The Tyler's toast closed a very pleasant evening .

As he was in his 80 th year , he could not do as he would have done some 30 or 40 years

The newly-installed Master proceeded to invest his officers in the following order , giving each in their respective positions a

word of admonition , supplemented by an additional exhortation from the Installing Master . Tbe customary P . M . ' s jewel was presented to Bro . Ludwig Lichtivitz , I . P . M ., with a few well chosen words by the W . M ., who also invested Bros . P . Skar , S . W . ; P . P . Perry , J . W . ; W . H . Smith , Treas . ; Thos . Holland , Sec . ; F . W . Buxton , i . D . ; VV . bC . Smth , jun ., J . D . ; J . C Conway , I . G . ;
