Christmas Cards.
CHRISTMAS CARDS .
Messrs . Eyre and Spottiswoode , of Great New-street , E . C ., have well sustained their reputation in the matter of Christmas Cards for the present season . They—that is to say , the cards , not the firm—are of all kinds and sizes , but the same standard of excellence is maintained throughout , and it is almost needless to say that the same taste in design and the same perfection of finish in
execution are as noticeable as in past years . Certain landscapes , representing quiet country scenery , and described as specimens of the " Gem " series , are among the most notable . Sundry sets of humorous illustrations , entitled " Cause and Effect , " * ' Inquisitive Pigs , " and "Christmas Hatchings , " are capital , and will no doubt find the favour they so richly merit . Among ordinary Christmas Cards aie
many good figure and landscape subjects , with seasonable good wishes in all cases , some being quaintly shaped in imitation of shells , others as crosses , but in the majority of cases the designs are floral . In addition are certain Calendars , for use as well as lor purposes of decoration ; but the gem of the series is a New Year's Card , in white velvet , edged with pale blue silk
fringe , than which it is difficult to imagine anything more elegant for presentation to a lady . Messrs . Eyre and Spoitiswoode are to be congratulated on tne success with which they have upheld their reputation this season in the matter of Christmas ~ ards . Mr . Harding , oi 42 , Piccadilly , has been equally successlul , as in past seasons , with his Christmas and New
Year ' s Presentation Cards and Art Souvenirs . These have a two-fold attraction , as being , in the first place , specially designed by a staff of well-known artists , and , in the next , because , with but few exceptions , they represent incidents in those Sports and Pastimes in which all classes of Englishmen , and , for the matter of that , Englishwomen likewise
take infinite delight . Of the 19 sets which have been specially designed for the current season , the first four are by Mr . Alfred Roberson , whose reputation as a delineator of hunting , shooting , coaching , and like incident is well and widely known . This year he has given us two sets of Fox Hunting scenes—one comic ,
Christmas Cards.
one of Fox Hounds , and one of Shooting , and in all are noticeable the usual characteristics of this artist , namely , his readiness of design and his perfect knowledge of the various animals he introduces , be they horses , dogs , or men . Mr . Leslie Radclyffe ' s set of " Humorous Sporting " are to be commended , and so are Mr . R . H . Moore ' s sets of " Prize Cats , " " Kennels and Foxhounds" and
"Cautious Puppies ; " Joachim Susini's Yachting Scenes , and 1 ' rout , Salmon , and other studies in chalk ; Mr . Harry Bright ' s "English Birds ; " Mr . James Temple ' s Fishing Scenes , and the _ Flower sets by Miss Florence Hewitt , with Ernest Griset ' s Shooting , Horse Racing , Sportive , and Fishing conceits , which are very quaint , complete the series , and in each case the artist has shown himself as deft as ever with his pencil or crayon . In fact ,
Mr . Harding , who confines his attention almost wholly to the production of Christmas and New Year Cards of one class—namely , those which appeal to our love of sport and pastime—has gathered about him a band of artists , who , in their several spheres , are perfect masters of the art they follow ; while in the matter of reproduction there is nothing to be desired . We have much pleasure in drawing the attention of our readers to these cards .

THE COSMOPOLITAN MASONIC CALENDAR , DIARY , AND PUCKET BOOK . —( London : Geo . Kenning . ) —Il there exist any Freemasons who are unacquainted with the compact and neat little pocket-book which Bro . Kenning compiles for the benefit of the Craft every year , we are rendering them a service in directing their attention to it . It is a perfect "Inquire Within " upon
everything connected with Freemasonry in alls its departments and in all parts of the world . It comprises a diary of all Masonic meetings in the metropolitan district throughout the year 18 S 8 . Following this is a list of the members of the United Grand Lodge and of all the supreme authorities meeting in London , Edinburgh , and Dublin ; the names of the principal Provincial and District Officers ,
and a complete list of all Masonic bodies , their places and times of meeting throughout the United Kingdom , so that in whatever town a Mason may be he can readily discover whatever is going on . In addition , it gives full particulars regarding every Grand Masonic body throughout the . world , those of English speaking countries , of France , and of Germany being treated in greater detail than the rest . Besides its usefulness , it thus becomes also a remarkable
evidence of the universality and widespread influence of the Order . From this point of view it may be mentioned that the number of lodges owing allegiance to the Grand Lodge of England alone is 2235 , while another striking fact is that there are 6 7 , 43 2 Knights Templar in the United States . In conclusion , we may say we have tested the "Cosmopolitan" in a number of places , and found its accuracy each time to be unfailing . —Bristol Mercury .
