ceded by three passings and two initiations . The following officers were afterwards appointed for the ensuing year : Bros . M . F . Curtis , l . P . M . ; W . J . Miller , S . W . ; W . H . Mitchell , J . W . ; the Rev . G . Hughes , Chap . ; J . Methven , Treas . ; W . Bowyer , Sec . ; H . C Sims , S . D . ; E . A . Edwards , J . D . ; W . H . Chapman , D . C ; W . Fowler , Org . ; J . Martin , I . G . ; T . O . Spencer and R . H . Weekes , Stwds . ; and Henley , Tyler . A cordial vote of thanks to the Masterwith

was passed retiring , congratulations on the success which had attended his year of office , and a similar compliment was awarded to the Installing Master . A vote of sympathy was passed with Bro . H . C . Sims ( who sent an apology for non-attendance ) in his recent severe affliction . " Hearty good wishes" were expressed by the visitors towards the newly-installed W . M ., under whose presidency about forty brethren afterwards sat down to banquet . The usual Masonic toasts were honoured .

PLUMSTEAD . —United Military Lodge ( No . 153 G ) . —The usual monthly meeting of the above lodge took place on Friday , the gth inst ., at the Lord Raglan Hotel , Burrage-road . Bro . Robert Gooding , W . M ., presided , supported by the following officers , brethren , and visitors : Bros . Capt . W . Weston , P . M ., P . P . G . Sd . Br . Kent ; Capt . G . Spinks , P . M ., P . P . G . Sd . Br . Kent ; G .

Kenneday , P . M ., P . G . Stwd . Kent ; W . Maule , P . M . ; T . Ovenden , P . M . ; C . Jolly , P . M . ( Hon . ); A . Murdock , J . W . ; A . Ware , Sec ; W . Seager , S . D . ; T . Cowper , J . D . ; Col . Vansittart ; A . Heath , acting S . W . ; R . Port , G . Hayward , W . Murphy , T . Allen , A . Clark , A . Harrison , J . H . Gee , G . Ingle , E . Hathaway , f . Mills , T . Spackman , G . Osborne , and J . Scott , all of the lodge ; j . Home , 13 ;

H . Smith , 700 ; and others . The lodge having been opened in due form and the minutes confirmed , the ballot was taken for Sergeant Jos . Potter , and , being successful , he was initiated . Bro . Merrison was then passed , and Bro . Ingle raised—a good night ' s work , and admirably done by the W . M . and his officers .

A handsome little supper having been thoroughly enjoyed , Bro . Maule , I . P . M ., presiding , in the unavoidable absence of the W . M ., Ihe usual loyal and Masonic toasts were honoured . In responding for "The Provincial Grand Officers of the Province of Kent , " Bro . Kenneday referred with pride to the honour conferred upon Bro . Weston by the Prov . G .

Master , Earl Amherst , he being one of the brethren selected for Jubilee honours , that of S . G . D . being the honour about to be conferred on him . It was an honour not only to Bro . Weston , but to the lodge ; for himself , he was only a Steward , but trusted next year to receive something more substantial . He paid a high tribute of praise to Bro Eastes , D . P . G . M ., who , he said , had the cause of Masonry

at heart , and wished him and the rest of the Grand Officers many years of health and happiness . Bro . Maule then proposed the toast of " The Worshipful Master" in eulogistic terms , speaking of him as not only a good Mason , but a genial friend , and in every way worthy of their respect . In proposing the toast of "The Past Masters , " Bro .

Maule spoke of the lodge as one of the first , if not the first , in the Province of Kent . The high compliment paid to their oldest Past Master , Bro . Captain Weston , showed unmistakeably the good feeling that the Prov . G . M ., Earl Amherst , had towards it , and not only to Bro . Weston , but to the large majority of their Past Masters . They were blessed with good Past Masters ; Bro . Weston constantly

attended , and often at great inconvenience to himself ; no matter what he had to do , if within the length of his cable tow , he always came and lent them his valuable advice and assistance . Bro . Capt . Spinks was also always with them , and so was Bros . Kenneday and Moulds . He asked them to drink the toast with bumpers . Bro . Weston , in responding , said he should not say much

that night about the honour about to be conferred upon him , preferring to wait until he had received it , which would be shortly . However , it was an honour to the lodge , and showed , as Bro . Maule had justly said , what Earl Amherst thought of it , for , considering the number of their Past Masters , they had more Provincial honours than any lodge

in the district , and he felt sure that in conferring those honours his lordship desired to express his approbation not so much to the recipients as to the lodge itself . Bros . Spinks , Kenneday , Maule , Ovenden , and Jolly having responded , "The Initiates , " " The Visitors , " " The Officers , " and Tyler's toast concluded the proceedings , which were enlivened by some excellent singing and reciting .

YORK—Eboracum Lodge ( No . 1611 ) . —The monthly meeting of this lodge was held on the 12 th inst . at Freemasons' Hall , St . Saviourgate , the W . M ., Bro . VV . B . Dyson , presiding , supported by Bros . T . B . Whytehead , P . M . ; J . T . Seller , P . M . ; J . Blenkin , P . M . ; G . Balmford , P . M ., Treas . ; the Wardens , officers , and many brethren .

There being no work in hand , Bro . T . B . Whytehead gave an address on Freemasonry , in which he endeavoured to indicate a course of reading and study for the adoption of those who desired to enlist themselves among the number of brethren who found in Masonry a source of intellectual pleasure . He urged that those who declared Freemasonry to be merely a Charitable Society , not only degraded it to

the level of Odd Fellowship or Forestry , but thereby laid its members open to the charge of being guilty of the greatest extravagance and folly . On the other hand , those who regarded the Brotherhood as an agreeable excuse for Indulging in periodical festivities reduced Freemasonry to the status of a very fourth rate kind of club . In either view he saw nothing to recommend Freemasonry to a man

of culture . If it was desired to secure the approval and support of brethren of mental attainments and social culture , it was necessary to prove that there was something moie in it than the maintenance of Charitable Institutions , the perpetual repetition of ritual , the principles of which were taught in every church and school in the civilised world , and the pleasantries connected with the Fourth

Degree . Freemasonry had a literature , and possessed intellectual enjoyments for those , who cared to avail themselves of them . The Eboracum Lodge had the nucleus of a very good Masonic library , and he wished to see the members taking advantage of their opportunities in this respect . By doing so they would not only elevate the status of the lodge " , but would find in Freemasonry itself a pleasure and a permanent delight , to which hitherto the great bulk of the

Order were unfortunately total strangers . Bro . Whytehead then presented some volumes of Masonic works to the lodge collection , and the W . M ., on behalf of Bro . H . Scott , presented half-a-dozen cut glass water bottles . The lodge was closed , and the brethren afterwards supped together in the banqueting room .

Craft Masonry.
