A Modern Lady Freemason.
A MODERN LADY FREEMASON .
Mrs . M . E . Lease , the female Populist , who claims she is a Freemason , and says she is prepared to prove it to any Grand Master in the country , arrived in New York from her home in Wichta recently . When asked how she becamea Mason , Mrs . Lease said : '' For
the present that must be an inviolate secret , lt is sufficient for me to say now that I am a Mason , and that I am prepared to prove it to the satisfation of any Master Mason in the land . It is onl y a question of time when I will be recognised hy the Craft . " Mrs . Lease proposes to select for her associates
women whose standing , sociall y and intellectually , will be of a character that will command universal respect . "The first lodge of women , " says Mrs . Lease , " will be the peer ot any Masonic body in the world . I know lhe work thoroughly , and can institute a lodge without
the help ol any man . Mrs . Lease says the old requirement that . 1 candidate for the Masonic Degree must be able to wield tbe trowel and lay stunts is played out , and that she and her confreres won ' t need a ( irand Lodge permit . It i . s the opinion of Masons there that Mrs . Lease's

talk about forming a lodge of women Masons is bunkum . They claim it is impossible for her to have sufficient knowledge of the secrets of the Order to carry out her alleged plans . A Mason who has talked with her on the subject says that she is undoubtedly possessed of many of the secrets of the Order , but she must have obtained her information in an irregular
way , as it is certainly not true that she has been regularly initiated . The first announcement that Mrs . Lease was a Mason in good standing has caused widespread interest in Masonic circles all over , but the unanimous opinion expressed in New York by prominent Masons i . s that Mrs . Lease does not know what she is talking about .

1050 ] — HISTORY OF THE ROYAL BRUNSWICK LODGE , No . 296 , SHEFFIELD . I concur in Bro . Hughan ' s opinion that the application for the warrant of the " Royal Brunswick Lodge , " granted b y the Prov . G . M ., Richard Slater Milnes , on Sth July , 1793 , wa ^ the outcome oi a desire b y members of the Athol Lodge , No . 72 , to transfer their allegiance
to the premier Grand Lodge . Bro . Stacey is to be congratulated on the completion of his book , which I have read with interest , and so far as I can judge , it is generally correct . On p . 32 the Iodge is stated to have removed to the Ball Inn , Campo Lane , in 1803—this probably is a typographical error for 1 S 00—and the table on p . Co , giving the " foundation " of the existing
Sheffield lodges , needs revision . Apart from the manifest printer ' s error , of " 1865 " for '' 1765 , " the dates given for the first six lodges are those of their respective "warrants , " whilst in the case of No . 2491 the date of " consecration , " 27 th November 1893 , is given . The warrant bears date 12 th October , 18 93 .
I here is but slight reference to the building of the new Masonic Hall , which I find was opened on iSth July , 1 S 77 . In noting these matters , which go to make " history , * ' I personally thank Bro . Stacey for a very valuable and interesting contribution to our Iodge literature . JNO . LANE .
Death Of Bro. Capt. Homfray , D.G.M. For Mon Mouthshire.
DEATH OF BRO . CAPT . HOMFRAY , D . G . M . FOR MON MOUTHSHIRE .
Our readers , and especially those whose duties bring them to Freemasons' Hall from time to time in connection with the elections of the three Institutions , will regret to hear of the somewhat sudden death of Bro . Capt . Homfray , D . G . M . for Monmouthshire , and
Charity Representative of that province , which took place at his residence at Newport 011 Tuesday last . As recently as a week ago , the deceased attended a meeting of the Newport Pilotage Commission , to which he was clerk . lt was remarked that he was suffering from cold , and he himself said he should not have come out , but that at the meeting somewhat important
business had to be transacted . Pneumonia supervened , and this proved fatal . The deceased was 6 3 years of age , and was one of the sons of the late Alderman Samuel Homfray , of Tredegar and Newport , and distantl y related , it is said , to Lord Tredegar . At the time of his death he held the office of Deputy Provincial Grand Master of Monmouthshire , and was
also L Provincial Grand Mark Master Mason for the same province . For many years he had taken a leading part in Masonic affaire , not only in his own province , but in connection with the Charitable Institutions , and was rarely absent from the elections held at
Freemasons' Hall from time to time . In Newport he held the appointment of Clerk to the Newport Pilotage Commission , as well as other offices , and , from his genial and kindly disposition , was universally popular . He leaves a widow , lo whom we offer our condolence and sympathy .

authority on these " Old Charges , " has written a valuable introduction respecting the scroll and its likeness to the York MSS , Nos . 1 and 5 , especially the latter . Nothing more can he desired in such a reproduction , which rellects great credit on the Northern College , and
is one more prjof of the interest taken in Masonic researches b y English Rosicrucians . The edition is a limited one , but we understand there nre still a few copies yet to be subscribed for at half-aguinea each , to be had from The Editor , Central Masonic Hull , Shakespeare-street , Newcastle-on-Tyne ,

THE NEWCASTLE COLL . M . S .
No time has been lost in the reproduction of the " Newcastle College M . M . 1167 , < ie ., Northumberland .
lhe facsimile is by Mr . b . Compton Price , and , therefore , may be accepted as perfect , which it undoubtedl y is . The transcript of the roll is by Bro . Schnitger , and also thc glossary and notes , admirable features of this excellent reproduction . The editor , Bro . Schnitger , has done his part in a most enthusiastic , as well as scholarly , manner , and Bro . Hughan , the
authority on these " Old Charges , " has written a valuable introduction respecting the scroll and its likeness to the York MSS , Nos .
