Masonic Notes .
The death of Bro . Capt . Homfray will cause a widespread feeling of regret amongst a large number of the Fraternity , and will be a serious loss to the Province of Monmouthshire . As Deputy Grand Master he rendered excellent service , but it was as the Charity
representative that he was more widely known . His familiar and genial presence at the elections in connection with the three Institutions will be sadly missed , and the representatives from the various Provinces will lose in him a warm friend and a zealous and useful colleague .
Masonic Notes.
We have received from Bro . Horace Budden , who acts as Almoner for St . Cuthbert Lodge , a very formidable list of individuals who can only be described as Masonic cadgers . Many of them are reported by the Secretaries of the lodges to which they claimed to
belong as " not known , " and such replies as" Trades on Charity , " " Prefers tramping to work , " occur , while several " owe their position to drink . " It is a melancholy list , aiid although we should like to print it in
extenso for the good of the Craft , we think for various reasons it would not be advisable . We would suggest to Bro . Budden that it would be useful to print a list and forward a copy to any lodge Secretary or Almoner who applied lor it .
We have naturally much sympathy with the lament of our correspondent last week over the narrow views held by the authorities of the Grand Lodge of Ireland with regard to publication of proceedings , but we are loth to believe that the prohibition extends to
the Masonic press . There may , possibly , be something to say against the publication of petty details in the local press , but it applies no more to Masonic functions than to other social or convivial meetings , and may generally be left to the discretion of the writer .
It is not many years since one or two Provinces in England were under the same ban . The Provincial Grand Masters — good , watchful , cautious soulsthought that the fabric of Masonry rested on the one
idea of secrecy , not only in essentials , but in all matters connected with the meetings of the Craft ; but those views have died out , and we have no recent experience of any attempt to restrict the full publication of Masonic intelligence .
* * * This being the centenary year of Benevolent Lodge , No . 303 , it is understood that application will be made to Grand Lodge in due course for a centenary warrant , and that the deservedly popular P . G . M . for Devon ,
Lord Ebrington , will , in recognition of the centenary , hold the annual regular meeting of the Prov . Grand Lodge of Devon under the banner of this old lodge . Such annual meeting usually takes place late in the summer or in early autumn .
At the 101 st installation meeting reported incur last issue , a peculiar instance of Masonic hereditary was mentioned in the case of Bro . Burden , the W . M . His grandfather was one of the first Wardens of the Iodge and became its Master . His name appears in the
warrant . In 1820 another Bro . Burden was installed in the chair—the present W . M . 's father , and the present W . M ., after filling the office in 1870 and again in 18 71 , is once more the oldest P . M . installed , all the other offices being filled for this year by Past Masters .
In our report of the Provincial Grand Chapter of Hampshire , a few weeks since , we reported Bro . Le Feuvre as having appointed , amongst other officers , two Provincial Grand Principal Sojourners , two Provincial Grand Sword Bearers , and two Provincial
Grand Directors of Ceremonies . This was not the case , and we owe an apology to Bro . Le Feuvre ; but the statement was made on the authority of a local print , as well as the remarks said to have been made by
Bro . Le Feuvre . May we venture to suggest that these unauthorised and incorrect statements might be avoided by an official report of the proceedings being sent to the Freemason .
"The Comet , " a Plymouth publication has recently devoted considerable space to a portrait and sketch of the life and work of Bro . W . J . Hughan . The portrait is taken from the engraving published in " Ars Quatuor Coronati , " and is a striking likeness . To our readers .
and indeed the Craft generally , the particulars of his Masonic career are too familiar to need repeating , but it will , perhaps , be news to our readers to learn on the authority of the "Comet" that " next to his antiquarian and biblical researches must be placed his knowledge
of Freemasonry . We had always thought our good brother's researches into the hidden mysteries of Masonic Archaiology and History had formed by far the principal work of his life , and it is somewhat startling to find that outside our Order he has even a
greater reputation as an antiquarian and biblical student , his three points being enumerated in the following order : Biblical studies , Temperance work
and the Literature of Freemasonry . We wish much that Bro . Hughan would send to the Freemason a bibliography of his works and pamphlets , as thc one in the " Comet , " although good , is not complete .
