A Masonic Scholarship.
A MASONIC SCHOLARSHIP .
Lodge St . Alban , No . 38 , has resolved to found in the University of Adelaide a scholarship in perpetuity . The scholarship may be held in arts , science , law , medicine , or music , will be tenable for such , time ( three years ) as will allow each holder to obtain a degree in the regular course , and will be open to the sons and daughters of
all worthy brethren of the South Australian Constitution . Briefly stated , the privileges acquired by the scholars will consist of a University education /; - ^ of expense . Scholars will receive their education in the University without paying fees . In the arts and science course the fees amount on the whole to about ^ 16 16 s .
a year for three years , so that the total value of the scholarship represents a saving of about . £ 50 to the parents of each scholar . The advantages of the scholarship are , therefore , of a substantial character . Indeed , in most , if not all , instances it will be found that from lack of funds the scholars would have been
unable to obtain a University education at all but for the help which will result from the generosity of the St . Alban Lodge . We learn that the Permanent Committee have been charged by the lodge to complete all the necessary arrangements with the University , and to prepare the rules which shall settle the conditions
required of candidates and govern the procedure of the lodge in electing scholars , and it is understood that the scheme is in a forward state of preparation , and will be submitted to the lodge at its regular meeting in January . The hope is that the arrangement will be perfected soon enough to admit of the election of a
scholar in time for the academical session of 1891 . Since the above was in type the Worshi pful Master of Lodge St . Alban conveys to us the pleasing intelligence that the University scholarship scheme has so far progressed as almost to become an accomplished fact , and we are at liberty to announce that applications for
the scholarship can be sent to the Hon . Secretary of the lodge . The academical year commences in March , and applications should therefore be made forthwith . The son or daughter of a worthy Mason hailing under the S . A . Constitution is eligible , with certain necessary qualifications . —South Australian Freemason . mm
FIELD LANE REFUGES AND RAGGED SCHOOLS . 'This is one of the earliest Metropolitan Benevolent Institutions of its kind , and it would be difficult to estimate the amount of good it has done . Taking the whole period of its existence , we find that mere than 40 , 000 persons have been sheltered in thc Refuges , and employment found for nearly 10 , 000 persons . Only last year there were 24 , 711
attendances at the Ragged Church ; I 2 , S 6 S at other Mission Services ; 10 , 565 at the Band of Hope ; 10 , 177 at the Mother Meetings ; and 1 SS 5 at the Creche . In addition , SS 3 persons were admited to the Refuges ; 23 , 407 portions of broken good and 14 , 576 loaves were given away , and 11 , 03 *; hot dinners , & c , were given to children . This is
certainly a result sheet of genuine good work in aid of the waifs and strays of the Metropolis , which reflects the greatest credit on the Managers and Committees of the Charity , and we sincerely trust that a charity which is well occupied in doing good will receive more and more support , especially at this bitter season of the year , when the amount of poverty and suffering is so much greater .
