Christ Church , College Park , Kensal Green , W . ON the 25 th of October , 1886 , the BISHOP of LONDON wrote thus concerning this Mission : — " I warmly recommend this case to the liberality of all Christian people . " The reason for the Bishop ' s words is this : —College Park is a large district in St . John ' s , Kensal Green , containing nearly 10 , 000 inhabitants . The only provision for Church of England people here is a " potato shop , " which uncomfortably and unhealthily holds 50 people . We have three cubic feet of atmosphere a-piece . ( In Schools the Government insists on 80 cubic feet per child . ) Land was generously given last year by All Soul ' s , Oxford , for a Church to cost £ 8000 , towards which £ 500 have been already subscribed . The Bishop of London's Fund has bought a site for a Mission Room , Chapel , which is estimated to cost £ 1600 in all . Over £ 600 have been collected for the building of it , but as the Committee deem it imprudent to commence building till £ 1000 at least have been subscribed , we are doomed to a fourth year ' s delay and loss , unless we can shortly secure the balance of about £ 400 . Church people are fast leaving the church and joining Nonconformist bodies simply because there is no church accommodation . One clergyman , unaided by either Scripture-reader or Bible-woman , with only a low , small , and inadequate mission-room can not do very much among nearly 10 , 000 people , especially when he is engaged in appealing for funds . We must begin the building at once , or wait discouraged and enfeebled for another year . With so strong a recommendation as that given by our bishop , may I ask for some assistance from the Craft . WM . M . BLANDFORD , Hotspur , 1626 ; Earl of Carnarvon Chapter , 1642 ; Mission Clergyman and Hon . Secretary to the Building Fund .
