Beswicke-Royds , and proving favourable , he was initiated in a most impressive manner by his father , the W . M . taking the S . W . chair . The working tools and tracing board were explained by the VV . M ., Bro . S . Scott Young , and the charge was

delivered by Bro . S . B . Priestley , P . M ., D . C . After "Hearty good wishes" had been expressed , the lodge vvas closed , and the brethren sat down to a banquet , provided by Bro . Beswicke-Royds in honour of the interesting event . After the company had done ample justice to the feast , which vvas served in splendid style by Bro . Jno . Rowell , the host of the Red Lion Hotel , and the toast of " The

Queen " had been duly honoured , "' TheW . M . gave "The Grand Lodge , " to vvhich Bro . Beswicke-Royds , P . G . D ., responded , and "The Provincial Grand Lodge , " for vvhich Bros . Dr . Royle , P . P . G . D ., and Vaughan , Prov . G . Reg ., returned thanks . The W . M . then rose to propose "The Health of the Newly-Initiated Brother , " and remarked upon the unique

circumstance of this being the third generation of the family vvho had honoured the lodge by " patronising their mysteries and joining in their assemblies . " He dwelt upon the fact that the new brother was born to a position of great responsibility in the county ; that he vvould be called upon to administer justice as a county magistrate ; that the pleasures and responsibilities of wealth and exalted

position rested upon his shoulders ; and expressed a hope that the tenets and principles of the Craft , of which he had so lately become a member , would be his guiding principle in discharging the onerous duties of his exalted position , and that he would devote himself to the good of his fellow-creatures , the amelioration of the lot of his less fortunate neighbours , and the general welfare of mankind ,

and strive to leave the world better than he found it . Bro . C . H . Beswicke-Royds responded in a short , but graceful and felicitous speech . "The Health of Bro . C . R . N . Beswicke-Royds , the host of the evening , " was then proposed by Bro . Rev . Dr . Salts , P . P . G . Chap ., in an eloquent speech , in which the speaker dwelt upon the eminent services rendered by that

distinguished brother in the many Degrees of Freemasonry with which he is connected , and vvhich was received with tumultuous applause by the brethren . Bro . C R . N . Beswicke-Royds responded , and proposed the toast of " The Visitors , " expressing the great pleasure it gave him to see so many visitors present upon so interesting , and , to him , eventful occasion .

Bro . Bowen , P . M ., and Bro . A . Butterworth , S . D . 2069 , and other brethren , responded . Bro . Priestley , P . M ., than proposed "The Health of the VV . M ., Bro . Scott Young , " and remarked upon the conspicuous ability shown by that brother in delivering the various ceremonies vvhich it had been his lot to perform , that being the sixth ceremony since his installation in

December last , and congratulated the lodge upon having selected so worthy a Mason to preside over them . The VV . M . responded in a feeling speech , pointing out his sense of the great responsibility resting upon the Master of a lodge , and expressing his determinotion to carry out the solemn duties of his high office to the best of his ability .

The toast of "The Officers" was then proposed by Bro . Nuttall , I . P . M ., who said he could not help referring to the example set them by the VV . M ., and he had every confidence that they vvould do their utmost to follow it . The S . W ., J . W ., and S . D ., responded in suitable

terms . The W . M . then proposed "The P . M . 's of the Lodge , " and dwelt upon the valuable help they had afforded in times past , and expressed the earnest hope that the lodge would continue to receive the same assistance from those brethren .

Bros . Cockroft , Shuttleworth , and Nuttall , responded . The Tyler's toast brought to a close one of the most enjoyable and interesting meetings in the annals of 226 , now close upon its centenary . FAREHAM . —Lodge of Harmony ( No . 309 ) . — On Thursday , the 7 th inst ., Bro . Thomas H . Williams was duly installed as the W . M . of the above Iodge for the

M ., in making the presentation , expressed his regret that the lodge vvas about to lose the services of such an able and zealous officer . Bros . Cooke and Headley made suitable acknowledgments .

The brethren subsequently retired to the large room adjoining , where a banquet vvas served in good style by Bro . Young , P . M . The W . M . presided , and the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were honoured . "The Health of the VV . M . " was proposed by Bro . Cooke in a neat and effective speech . He referred to the

great interest taken by Bro . Williams in the Charities connected vvith the Craft , and alluded to the fact that when he accepted the Stewardship for the Boys' School he raised no less a sum than £ , 350 towards that Charity . The toast of " The Masonic Charities , " vvhich vvas submitted by the Mayor of Portsmouth ( Bro . George Ellis , J . P . ) , was responded to by Bro . J . Mason , P . M ., collector

of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , vvho referred to the great demands at present made upon the central Charities , and cautioned the brethren that they should exercise the utmost care in accepting candidates for admission to the Craft . He pointed out that it was inadvisable to admit those whose means did not justify their candidature .

Bro . Edgar Goble , Prov . G . Sec , P . G . D . England , also cautioned the W . M . 's present very strongly not to admit to the Order those whose pecuniary position would be likely to render them almost immediate objects of Charity . Bro . G . Felton Lancaster also responded on behalf of the Hampshire Benevolent Institution , which , he said , had been successfully established . They had recently been

able to deal with three applications of a deserving character , and they hoped shortly to be able to invest £ 1000 , the interest of which , with their ordinary income from subscriptions , would be sufficient to meet their present needs . " Both these distinguished brethren availed themselves of the opportunity to speak in terms of the highest and most unqualified praise of the way in which the Installing Master , Bro . Creedon , had performed his task . "The Healths of the W . M . " and "W . M . ' s and

Representatives of Neighbouring Lodges , " were nextgiven , properly honoured , and duly responded to , the latter by Bro . J . Jenkins , W . M . 487 . A number of visitors vvere then compelled to leave to catch the last train , but a sufficiently numerous and socially - disposed party were left to complete the toast list , and spend a happy evening vvith song and entertainment .
