Canbury Gardens , Kingston-on-Thames , was formally opened by Lady Ellis , wife of Bro . Sir J . W . Ellis , Bart ., M . P ., on Saturday last , when the whole riverside was gay with bunting in honour of the occasion . Bro . Alderman Sir J . Whitaker Ellis , Bart ., M . P ., ex-Lord Mayor of London , has at length acceded to the wishes of the new Corporation of Richmond , and has consented to become the first Mayor of the new borough .

The marriage of Mr . H . S . Rawlinson , Goth Rifles , eldest son of Major-General Sir Henry C . Rawlinson , with Miss Coleridge Kennard , daughter of Bro . J . Coleridge Kennard , was solemnised at St . Paul ' s , Knightsbridge , on the 6 th instant .

Bro . Lord and Lady Brassey have promised to attend the prize distribution of the Wolverhampton Science and Art Institute , on Tuesday next , the iSth instant , when her ladyship will distribute the prizes , and Bro . Lord Brassey deliver an address .

Plans have been passed at a special meeting- of the Wallsend Local Board for the erection of a Masonic Hall at Wallsend . The new building , which will cover an extensive area , will be in the Elizabethan style of architecture . The estimated cost is £ 2500 . A company , known as the Tyne Masonic Hall Company , has been formed , and , at a preliminary meeting , 750 £ 1 shares were taken up , it having been determined to raise the necessary capital on that principle .

Bro . the Rev . Dr . Lemon , Prov . Prior of Devon , purposes holdingatthe Loyal Brunswick Priory , St . George ' s Hall , East Stonehouse , on the 24 th inst ., a Provincial Priory of Knights Hospitaller of the Order of St . John of Jerusalem , Palestine , Rhodes , and Malta , for the inception of such Knights Templar of the Province as Knights of Malta who have not yet been received , and are desirous , upon ballot approval , of being admitted into the Order of Malta upon presenting themselves for that purpose .

THE PROPOSED ESCUI . APIAN LODGE . —At a meeting of the founders of the above lodge , held at Craven House , on Thursday , the 23 rd ult ., it was agreed to at once petkicn Grand Lodge for a warrant . Other matters , re fees , days of meeting , & c , were duly arranged and agreed to . Any duly registered medical practitioner , attached to a regular 1 odge , can have full particulars by applying to the acting Secretary , Thomas Dutton , M . D ., P . The producers of mourning stationery appear to be aiming at the same simplicity as the modern undertaker , who is now in a fair way to abolish the dreadfully heavy and sombre trappings which have for so long a period been associated with the funerals of all classes of her Majesty's

subjects . Messrs . John Stoneman and Co . ' s registered "Unique mourning" stationery simply consists of a black margin on the left side of the sheet of paper , the effect of which is artistic and simple to the last degree . It will , we feel sure , be in great demand as soon as it becomes known .

Messrs . Griffith , Farran and Co . will issue on the ist December a biography of Isaac Pitman , of Bath , the inventor of phonography , by Thomas Allen Reed . It will be illustrated with woodcuts and facsimile pages , and published in cloth for 3 s . 6 d . Mr . Isaac Pitman's life has been one of extraordinary usefulness and activity . He has worked for over 50 years with unceasing energy to perfect the system of shorthand with which his name will go down

to posterity , and to bring about a reformation of our mode of spelling . The number of writers of his system of phonography is now enormous , and by these , as well as by the general public , this biography will be looked forward to with great interest . To them the name of T . A . Reed will be almost as . familiar as that of Isaac Pitman , and no better pen could have been found to write a life of the " father of phonography . "

Bro . Lord and Lady Hothfield , who have been spending the holidays at Appleby Castle , Westmorland , have arrived at Hothfield Place , near Ashford . We are glad to hear that Bro . Sir H . Drummond Wolff has sufficiently recovered from his late dangerous illness as to be able to leave Teheran for England .

Bro . Major George Lambert , F . S . A ., presided at a dinner on behalf of the Watch and Clock Makers' Pension Society , at the Hoiborn Restaurant , on Monday last . We regret to hear that the Countess of Jersey has experienced a relapse , and that in the early part of the week considerable anxiety was felt as to her condition .

An International Challenge Cup , value £ 500 , has been instituted by the Royal Victoria Yacht Club , the first competition , which will be open to the world , being arranged to take place during the 1 S 01 season . The Prince of Wales , accompanied by Major-General Ellis and Bro . Sir Francis Knollys , left Marlborough House for Sandringham on the 7 th instant . His Royal Highness has appointed Bro . Sir Oscar Clayton , extra surgeon , to be surgeon-in-ordinary .

The Great City Lodge , No . 142 G , have arranged with Bro . James Stevens for the delivery of his lecture on "The Ritual and Ceremonial of the Symbolic Degrees in Freemasonry , " at the next regular meeting of the lodge at Cannon-street Hotel , on Saturday , the 14 th prox .

It is said that Bro . the Earl of Egmont is disposing of his Irish property . His lordship recently sold Lohort Castle , near Canturk , County Cork , on which he not long ago spent £ 40 , 000 , to the well-known cricketer Mr . T . C . O'Brien , nephew and heir-presumptive of Sir Patrick O'Brien , Bart .

Bro . F . G . Faithfull , who has held the position of Clerk to the Merchant Taylors' Company for nearly 20 years , has resigned on account of ill-health . At the Livery dinner in the hall , the Master referred in eulogistic terms to the able conduct of Bro . Faithfull in the discharge of his duties , and to the esteem and respect in which he was held by the members of the company .

It was announced at the Birmingham City Council on Monday that Mr . G . F . Muntz , brother of the late Mr . P . H . Muntz , M . P ., had invested £ ' 21 , 000 , the annual income of which was to be distributed among the medical and surgical charities of the city , and that Mr . Richard Cadbury had given his house and grounds at Moseley Hall , valued at £ 30 , 000 , for a children ' s convalescent home .

At the annual meeting of the Holland County Council on Friday , the 7 th inst ., Bro . Alderman Barrel ! , P . M . 4 69 , P . A . G . D . C . Lincolnshire , was unanimously elected Chairman of the Council . Bro . Barrell was lirst Chairman of the Council , but last year he voluntarily retired from the premier position to that of Vice-Chairman . Many of his friends strongly urged him to resume his former position , with the result that he is again Chairman by the unanimous vote of his colleagues .

Bro . Alderman Savory , the new Lord Mayor of London , was formally admitted into office on Saturday last at the Guildhall . Previous to the ceremony the retiring Lord Mayor ( Bro . Sir H . A . Isaacs ) and the Lord Mayor elect entertained at breakfast at the Mansion House the Court of

Aldermen , the Sheriffs and Under-Sheriffs , the Chaplain , the Lord Mayor and Sheriffs' Committee , and the members of the various guilds to which the new Chief Magistrate belongs . The party afterwards adjourned to the Guildhall , where the oath of office was taken by Bro . Alderman Savory .

During the week commencing the 24 th instant a series of dramatic representations will be given in the Theatre Royal , Edinburgh , under the auspices of Dramatic and Arts Lodge , No . 757 . Friday evening will be reserved for a concert in fancy costume of date 1715 . The performance

on the 24 th is under the patronage and presence of Bro . Sir Archibald Campbell , Bart ., and authority has been given by the Grand Lodge for the appearance of the Craft in full Masonic regalia . The proceeds of the week ' s entertainment will be devoted to the Annuity Fund of Scottish Masonic Benevolence .

The title of Mr . Julian Cross's new piece to be produced at Terry ' s Theatre on the morning of December 2 nd has been finally decided upon . It is to be called "The Penalty , " and among the artistes engaged will be found the following names : Messrs . Henry Dana , Henry Bedford , W . F .

Hargreaves , Robert Soutar , and Julian Cross , who will play the part of an Italian adventurer ; while the ladies are Miss Elinore Leyshon , Miss Marie Linden , Miss Alice Bruce , Miss Rose Dearing , and Miss Ruth Rutland , who will play the leading part , Cora Montez , a Spanish Creole .

I he festivities m honour of the Prince of Wales ' s 49 th birthday were held on Monday , the chief feature at Sandringham being the dinner given to the workmen and employes on the Royal estate . Sir Dighton Probyn , Comptroller of the Prince ' s household , presided , and while the dinner was in progress the Prince and Princess of Wales , accompanied by the Duke of Clarence and

Avondale , and the Princesses Victoria and Maud , and attended by Lady Sullield , General Ellis , and Bro . Sir Francis Knollys , entered and received a hearty greeting , the loyal toasts being honoured during their presence . At Windsor a Royal salute was fired in honour of the event , while in London the Royal Warrant Holders dined together under the presidency of Bro . Colonel Howard Vincent , M . P .

STAMMERING : ITS TREATMENT . —Under this title is published a very interesting and exhaustive treatise on impediments in speech , by Mr . B . Beasley , of Brampton Park , Huntingdon , who is indebted for his knowledge of the subject to the study and research consequent upon 30 years of personal suffering , and who now claims tu have cured himself by his own system . In these days of keen

competition and overcrowding in the professions , it is not to be wondered at that the authorities of the church , the army , and the navy are growing more and more particular about admitting young men into their ranks who cannot speak properly , and it clearly behoves parents to look well after this important branch of the education of the rising

generation . Mr . Beasley entirely disproves the common theory that the stammering child will " grow out" of his impediment if left alone , and equally upsets the absurd dictum that the malady is incurable . The pamphlet is illustrated with a few sketches of Brampton Park , Mr . Beasley ' s unique establishment for the reception and treatment of stammerers .

The box p lan for Mr . Julian Cross ' s matinee of " The Penalty" will open on Tuesday , the 25 th instant , when the rush for seats is expected to be very great . The marriage of the Hon . Francis Dudley Leigh , eldest surviving- son and heir of Bro . Lord Leigh , with Miss H . F . Beckwith , is fixed for Saturday , the 20 th instant .

It is understood that the total of the sums received in aid of the Hospital Saturday Fund amounts to £ 20 , 000 , and that the Committee in charge will forthwith distribute £ 16 , 000 . The Queen has directed letters patent to be passed tinder the Great Seal appointing the Earl of Northbrook , Lieutenant and Custos Rotulorum of the County of Southampton , vice Bro . the Earl of Carnarvon deceased .

The corner-stone of a splendid Masonic Temple was laid in Chicago on Thursday last week . The ceremonies were most _ impressive , and included a procession of 4000 knights wearing full regalia . _ The site of the new temple originally cost § 1 , 100 , 000 , and is now worth § 2 , 500 , 000 . At the close of the Masonic business of the Palladian Lodge , No . 120 , at Hereford , on Thursday , the 6 th inst . Bro . O . Shellard , P . M ., was presented by the brethren with his portrait , and they subsequently received it from his hands to add to the portraits of distinguished Masons which already adorn the walls of the lodge room . It is an enlarged photograph , three-quarter figure , half life-size , finished in

Bro . T . B . Whytehead , P . M . 1611 , G . S . B . England , & c , has just had published a most useful and much needed little manual , entitled "Ceremonies suitable for the occasion of the Funeral of a Worshipful Master , Past Master , or Warden , for use in open lodge . " The preparatory instructions are very appropriate and comprehensive , and the ceremonial is arranged by a master-hand . Opening

with Psalm xv ., and followed by a series of questions and replies by the VV . M . and Wardens respectively , and then chants b y the choir , the words of King Solomon , Eccles . xii ., are fittingly introduced , and some beautiful music , with suitable hymns , continueon the ceremony , one of the tunes

being quite a gem , and apparently new or generally unknown . The symbolism is very suggestive and imposing-, and altogether the brochure is a most valuable contribution to a department much neglected in England . Lord Mayor ' s Show , in spite of the somewhat unfavourable weather , attracted the usual throngs of sightseers along the line of route , and Bro . Savory must have been immensely gratified by the hearty reception he met with . The Show itself was on a grander scale than usual , and the various pageants were greeted with cheers as they passed . But the heartiest welcome of all was accorded to the

Crimean soldiers and sailors , the men who had helped to carry the heights ot Alma , bad fought so stubbornly at lnkerman , or ridden in the famous charge of the " Light Brigade " at Balaclava , the trumpeters who sounded that memorable charge being especially greeted . At the banquet which followed , and at which Bro . Lord Mayor Savory very gracefully presided , the principal guests included the Prime
