of initiation was rehearsed in a very careful and impressive manner , Bro . Richardson acting as candidate . Bro . Richardson answered the questions leading to the Second Degree . At the usual time the elections , according to the by-laws , took place , and resulted as follows : Bro . Austin was re-elected Treasurer ; Bro . Chalfont , Secretary ; Bro .

John Davies , Preceptor ; and Bro . James Sims , Deputy Preceptor . Bros . Jobson , Hillier , and Larter were appointed Auditors . Votes of thanks were passed to all the officers for their able services during the past year , and to Bro . Love for the admirable manner in which he had conducted the proceedings for the first time in this lodge . Bro . Richardson was elected a joining member , and the lodge was closed .

Stanley . The lodge was opened in the Second Degree , and the second ceremony rehearsed , Bro . Harrington as candidate . The lodge was resumed in the First Degree . The W . M . rose for the first time , and Bro . Taffs , 1 S 6 , was elected a joining

member . He returned thanks , and . promised attendance . The VV . M . rose for the second time , and Bro . Sandals was elected VV . M . for the ensuing week . The VV . M . rose for the third time , and Bro . Stanley proposed , seconded by Bro . Andrews , that Bros . Rayner in his usual effective style , and the usual toasts were honoured .

YORK . Hilda Chapter ( No . 23 ) . —On Thursday , the fith inst ., a meeting of this chapter was held in Freemasons ' Hall , St . Saviourgate , Bro . T . B . Whytehead , 30 , presiding , in the absence through severe illness of the M . W . S ., Bro . Donald Grant , 30 ° . The election of M . W . S . took place , with the result that Bro . the Rev . Wm . Valentine , M . A ., was unanimously chosen . Bro . Wh ytehead was also re-elected Treasurer .

Mark Masonry is making headway in the Province of Lincolnshire . Following in the wake of Crowle , Sutton Bridge has applied for a warrant to establish a lodge there , which has been granted , and we have the further pleasant information to make to the brethren

in this Degree that Spalding will soon follow . This must be gratif ying to Bro . Jack Sutliffe , Prov . Grand Master , and also to Bro . Bates , Dep . Grand Master of Lincolnshire , and other members of Grand Lodge . There are now in Lincolnshire ei ght Mark lodges . The inauguration of Prov . Grand Lodge was in 18 74

. The active Prov . Grand Secretary is Bro . Morton who has just been elected W . M . of Lodge 1 S 8 . When the Committee for General Purposes was formed at the Prov . Grand Lodge , held in November last , under the banner of the St . Oswald Lod ge , No . 387 , Crowle , it was decided to have a new banner for the province . '

Outlines of this new banner were forwarded b y Bro . Morton to Bro . George Kenning , of London who prepared a beautiful design therefrom , and it was submitted to the Committee , which met at the Masonic Hall , Gnmbsy , on Tuesday , September 30 th ; and there were present Bros . A . BatesD . P . G . M . in the chair ( in

, , the absence of Bro . Sutcliffe ) ; T . Staniforth P S G W W . Marshall , P . P . G . VV . ; Norfolk , P . G . M . O •' and Morton , P . G . S . It was decided to adopt the design submitted by Bro . George Kenning . It consists of a centre view of Lincoln Cathedral in stone colour on dark-blue silk .

Mark Masonry In Lincolnshire.

Above the Cathedral are three scrolls in crimson , on which there is this inscription— " Provincial Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons Lincolnshire . " The emblems of the Order are in gold . The banner is surrounded with crimson fringe . The whole will be a

work of art , and will be read y for use at the Prov Grand Lodge meeting at Gainsboro ' , in December next . With the banner will be provided a new sword . Bro . R . Wood , W . M . No . 3 S 7 , is Prov . Grand Sword Bearer , and will have the honour of unsheathing it at the above-named lodpe .

« J . H . EVANS AND CO . ( LIMITED ) . This company has been formed for the purchase of the business carried on so successfull y by Mr . J . H . Evans , mechanical and general engineer , and lathe and tool maker , of 159 , Wardour-street and 17 , Oxfordstreet . It was established as far back as 1810 by the grandfather of the present proprietor , whose ability

and enterprise in extending and developing it have been very generally recognised . The speciality which , however , has won him so hi gh a reputation in the engineering world is the manufacture and supply of every description of lathe , ranging in price , and of course in quality at the same time , from £ 10 to upwards of

^ 2000 , the merits of which , from the fact that the Evans Lathes have been awarded gold medals at the Great Exhibition in 1851 ; at the Health Exhibition in 1 S 84 ; at the Inventions in 18 S 5 ; ar > d at the Royal Jubilee Exhibition at Saltaire in 1887 . There is also attached to the business a school or club for practical turning , in

which instruction is given in the whole science of turnery . The capital of the company which will purchase this business , the lease of the premises in which the business is carried on , and thecopywright of Mr . J . H . Evans ' s valuable work on " Ornamental Turning , " of which at the time of its publication we were able to

speak so favourabl y , will amount to ^ 25 , 000 , in 5000 shares of £$ each , payable £ 1 on application , £ 1 is . on allotment , and the balance , if required , at not less than two monthl y intervals , by calls not exceeding £ 1 . A good directorate has been formed ( including Mr . Alfred Longsden , so well known in the engineering world ) , which Mr . J . H . Evans will join after allotment ,

and of which he will be the managing director . The offices are at 17 , Oxford-street , where the Memorandum of Association may be seen and full particulars obtained . The business will be taken over from 30 th June last , so that the profits made since that date will be the property of the Company . The scheme is without doubt a sound and business-like

one , in which it seems to us that those who have capital l ying idle at their banks may profitably engage , and all the more so seeing that , thanks to the initiative oi the Turners' Company ( of which Mr . THE CLYDE AUTOMATIC CRUTCH . Mr . Clyde B . Brown , Beverley House , Southgate Park , Friern Barnet , has invented a most ingenious contrivance , by which persons who have been obliged to use crutches will henceforth be able to dispense with them . The idea which Mr . Brown has , so successfull y

worked out and applied is that of a flexible joint , which b y the weight , pressure , and natural action of the bod y becomes locked and inflexible , and then unlocked and flexible . Then the instrument is first of all applied to an ordinary surgical boot and carried as far as the knee , where there is one of these patent joints

fitted . It is then carried to the hip , where another joint is fitted , and then continued to the armpit . A person thus provided may stand , walk , or sit without the sli ghtest difficulty . In the first two operations , the hi p and knee joints slip into sockets containing springs , which become compressed by the wei g ht of the body , and the joints cannot be bent , and the body

receives the proper support at the ri ght moment . But the moment the foot is raised from the ground or the pressure removed , as in walking or sitting , the ri g id joints become free to bend . The invention is an excellent one , and has been generall y approved b y all who have had experience in the manufacture of surgical appliances .

The Prince of Wales has consented to open on Monday , the 24 th inst ., the Sporting and Art Exhibition at King ' s Lynn , for the purpose of establishing a "Covert Fund " for the West Norfolk Hunt . His Royal Highness will probably be accompanied by the Princess of Wales and their daughters .
