Hayter Lewis , followed up by Bro . Williams , and again by Bro . Klein , the suggestion has been thrown out that the officers and members of the Quatuor Coronati might occasionally unbend from their graver studies and seek the solace of social enjoyment at the dwelling-house of one of their number . In other words , they have been asked to meet together from time to time as friends as well as

brethren . The experiments made by the brethren I have named , the S . W ., the I . G ., and Bro . Klein have borne very good fruit . We are getting to know one another better , and with the gratifying result that a greater familiarity with each other ' s crotchets has not lessened but increased the binding power of the tie which unites us . Among those whose heart goes out , so to speak , to his brethren on the occasions

when we are thus brought together is our new W . M ., and I put it to you as being by no means the least of his qualifications for the chair in which we have placed him this evening . A kindliness of disposition we have already learnt to appreciate , and which we feel sure will always be associated with his name and fame when his year of office shall have expired .

Hill , G . Baker , C . W . Hughes , J . A . Drake Smith , Wm . Theobald , H . M . Watt , and A . Thorn . Visitors : Bros . W . J . Sheppard , 14 , and E . J . Savory , 1731 . The lodge was opened and the minutes read and confirmed . Bro . Walter Coward , L . R . C ., 2000 , was elected a joining member . Bros . Baker and Theobald were passed , and Mr . Henry Murray Watt , T . R . C ., was initiated , the

charge to all the candidates being given by Bro . Gordon Smith . A ballot having been taken , Bro . Gordon Smith was unanimously elected W . M . for the ensuing year ; Bro . Frank Richardson , P . G . D ., was re-elected Treasurer ; and Bro . F . G . Mitchell , Tyler . Notice of motion was given to present the W . M . with a Past Master ' s jewel in recognition

of his services during his year of office . Two candidates , one for initiation and one for joining , were duly proposed , and the lodge was closed . The brethren then adjourned to their usual excellent cold repast , and afterwards the customary toasts and songs completed the harmony of the evening .

joining the lodge in 1 SS 1 to the present time , and referred to the numerous occasions on which he had been eminently useful to the Craft , and especially to that lodge . So highly did the brethren value Bro . Farrington's services , that the speaker was requested on behalf of several of the Past Masters and brethren to ask his acceptance of a Past Master's jewel , as a token of their regard for him and of their appreciation of his many services to the lodge for over nine years . The jewel bore the following inscrip-

Wilts , from brethren of No . 1271 , in recognition of his many valuable services to the lodge . 27 th October , 1 S 90 . " In presenting it , Bro . Sparks added the sincere wish that Bro . Farrington might enjoy many years of health and prosperity , and extend his useful services to the Craft in his new sphere .

Bro . Farrington , who was much affected , expressed his thanks in suitable terms , and said that handsome mark of regard was totally unexpected and undeserved , and that though circumstances would necessitate his absence , he should still visit Wiltshire , and hoped to be present at the Provincial meeting at Marlborough , and that wherever he might be he should always retain an affection and regard

for the lodge he had been associated with , and among whom he numbered so many friends . Letters of regret were then read from many brethren of the province , and also from the Province of Somerset , at their inability to attend . The toast of "The Visitors" was very suitably responded to by Bro . E . Brown , 103 . Several brethren rendered capital songs , and a most enjoyable evening was spent .

telegram was dispatched to H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , congratulating him and wishing him many happy returns of the 9 th of November , being his birthday . At the completion of all business , the lodge was closed . We must congratulate the W . M . and officers of the lodge for the very rapid progress they have made since the consecration , and the efficient way all do their work , considering

the short time they have met and the difficulty they experience in having meetings for instruction , as the lodge is composed principally of commercial men who are travelling long journeys during the week , and find it impossible to attend a lodge any other day but Saturday . We are sure , and indeed the great success of the lodge plainly shows , the founding of this lodge was an advantage to the brethren

in the district , and has filled a long felt want . We wish them every success . Bro . F . Stretch , the host , has been kind enough to make extensive alterations of the premises , so as to add to the comfort and convenience of all , and he has succeeded to such an extent that the arrangements are complete for the purpose of holding a lodge . The lodge and dressing rooms are entirely isolated from the other portions of the building .

sad loss the lodge had sustained by the lamented death of their dear Bro . Captain Hennah , P . P . G . D . C He was a genial gentleman and a thorough Mason , and held in the highest esteem by his brethren , and always took an active part in any work relating to Freemasonry . The VV . that Bro . R . J . Wilson was about to take his departure from the Old Country and to seek fresh pastures in Australia . He felt sure that Bro . Wilson had the sincere wishes of the members of the Derwent Lodge for a successful career . Bros . Hickman and Brown were raised , and Bro . Russell passed , the ceremonies being done by the VV . M . with his usual ability . Two candidates were proposed , and after transacting other business the brethren , at the invitation of the VV . M ., adjourned to refreshment .

LANDPORT . Portsmouth Temperance Lodge ( No . 206 S ) . —The monthly meeting of this prosperous lodge was held on Monday , the 27 th ult ., at the Speedwell Hotel , Commercial-road . Since the constitution of the lodge in 1 SS 4 it had always been held at the Soldiers' lnstuute , Portsmouth , but Monday night saw its removal to a far more capacious and well-adapted building . The

lodge room , which is due east and west , is most artistically fitted up with shields bearing Masonic devices , and the floor is covered with a very fine Brussels carpet , specially made with emblems of Masonry interwoven in same . So highly did the brethren value Bro . Farrington's services , that the speaker was requested on behalf of several of the Past Masters and brethren to ask his acceptance of a Past Master's jewel , as a token of their regard for him and of their appreciation of his many services to the lodge for over nine years .

Letters of regret were then read from many brethren of the province , and also from the Province of Somerset , at their inability to attend . telegram was dispatched to H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , congratulating him and wishing him many happy returns of the 9 th of November , being his birthday .
