The Quarterly General Court of the Governors and Subscribers of the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls was held in thc great hall of Freemasons' Tavern on Thursday . The chair was taken promptly at the hour SATURDAY , OCTOBER 15 , 1898 .
of noon by Bro . Sir Reginald Hanson , Bart ., M . P ., l ' . G . W ., Patiun and Treasurer of the Institution , and thc regular business of the meeting having been dispatched , the poll was opened for thc election of 13 Loin an approved list of 27 candidates . The result will be found in another part of our columns .
The annual meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Leicestershire and Rutland will be held at ( he Freemasons' Hall , Leicester , on Thursday , the 20 th inst .,

under the auspices of the John of Gaunt Lodge , No . 523 . The paper of agenda is a lengthy one , among the principal items being the consideration of the Reports of the Committee of General Purposes , the Charity Committee , and the Prov . Grand Registrar . There will also be submitted the 20 th Annual Report of the Leicestershire and Rutland Masonic Charity
Association , from which it appears that the past year was a record one , as many as 43 nominations for Life Subscriberships having been drawn for at the general meeting of the Association in January last , the whole of the value of which , with the exception of one sum of five guineas , was handed over to the Boys' School . The total raised by this organisation during the past year was thus . £ 225 15 s .
# # There will also be presented the First Annual Report of the Committee ofthe Kelly Memorial Fund . From this it appears that the total sum received in respect of this Fund , including interest on the capital invested , is close on . £ 39 6 . Of this £ 360 is capital ,
the subscriptions reaching £ 26 12 s ., and the interest . £ 8 12 s . We regret to find , however , that while the number of subscribing members on the several lodge rolls is returned at 7 6 7 , the number of donors including Prov . G . Lodge and the Prov . G . Mark Lodges of Leicestershire and Derbyshire is only 46 , while the number of annual subscribers is but 103 , the latter
being at the rate of 13 . 5 per cent , of the total membership of the Province . We trust that as the nature and purpose of the Fund becomes better known among the brethren of the Province it will be better appreciated , and that a short time hence it will be in our power to record a far higher percentage of subscribers than at present .
* * Wc beg to add that Prov . G . Lodge will be opened promptly at 3 . 30 p . m ., and that , when the proceedings arc ended , a banquet will be served . Application for tickets , price 6 s . each , for dinner and dessert , should be made to the Prov . G . Stewards , at Freemasons' Hall , Leicester , by to-morrow ( Saturday ) .
» » The annaul convocation of the Provincial Grand Chapter of Warwickshire will be held under the auspices of Guy ' s Chapter , No . 395 , at the Masonic Rooms , WiJJes-road , Leamington , on Monday , the 24 th instant . Chapter will be opened at 5 p . m ., and
the customary banquet will follow at 6 p . m . Application for tickets—price 5 s . exclusive of wine—should be made on or before Friday , the 21 st instant , so that the Stewards may make the necessary arrangements for the comfort and convenience of the companions who purpose attending . + * *
We have much pleasure in announcing that a new Lodge of Instruction—thc Alfred Newton , No . 2686—will be inaugurated at the Royal Palace Hotel , Kensington , W ., on Saturday , the 22 nd instant , at 6 . 30 for 7 p . m . prompt . The ceremonies of consecration and installation will be rehearsed by Bro . James Terry ,
P . G . S . B ., Secretary of the R . M . Benevolent Institution . Brethren to appear in Masonic clothing . Supper tickets , 2 s , 6 d ., exclusive of wine . The Hon . Secretary is Bro . D . F . Norrington , 26 , Clarges Street , W ., by whom any further information that may be desired will be furnished .
* * * It is evident from the report we published last week of thc proceedings at thc recent annual meeting of the Prov . Grand Lodge of Durham that Freemasonry in that part of northern England is in a very prosperous condition . The reports of the different executive
ollicers , as well as of the Committees in charge of the Provincial Charitable Funds , all showed that during the past year the Craft had been steadily progressing . The Prov . Grand Treasurer's statement of account showed a balance to the good of over , £ 350 . The Prov . Grand Master—Bro . Sir Hedworth
Williamson , Bart . —mentioned in his brief but very encouraging address that the number of subscribing members of lodges in the Province was 3092 , being " a steady increase for the year . Indeed , the one and only subject of regret was the enforced absence , through an accident which recently befel him , of the respected Deputy G . M . of the Province , Bro . the Rev .
Canon Tristran , Past G . Chap , of England . However , there is fair reason to hope that our rev , brother will be speedily restored to his wonted health , and so the proceedings passed off satisfactorily , the brethren being grateful for thc success of the past year , and hopeful as regards the future . ? » *
By the way , we are pleased to hear that it is intended to hold a festival next year in behalf of the Durham Masonic Hudson Benevolent Fund , which has

only lately been established , with a view to commemorating the invaluable services rendered to Freemasonry in the Province by Bro . R . Hudson , P . G . S . B ., Prov . Grand Secretary . We trust that when the time comes , this deserving Fund will meet with a generous support from the brethren .
* » » The Committee of Management of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , held their regular monthly meeting , under the presidency of Bro . J . A . Farnfield , P . A . G . D . C , Treasurer of the Institution . There was no great amount of business to be transacted .
The Secretary reported the deaths of one male and one widow annuitant , and three petitions were considered , and accepted , one being from a brother , and the other two from widows of brethren . It was formally announced-andtheannouncement was received with applause—that Bro . Lord Llangattock , Prov . G .
Master of South Wales ( E . D . ) , had very kindly consented to preside at the Festival which will be held on the 22 nd February , 18 99 , in aid of the Institution , and we trust his lordship will be as generously supported as he was in 1897 , when he presided as Chairman at the Girls' School Festival .
» » * Southampton on Wednesday was the scene of one of the most interesting functions of the year . Just 60 years ago to the very day the foundation stone of the first of the splendid system of docks of which the port is now able to boast was laid with full Masonic honours ,
the ceremony being performed by the late Bro . Admiral Sir Lucius Curtis , who two years later was appointed Prov . G . Master of Hampshire . On Wednesday , the 12 th instant , the copestone was laid at the southwest corner of the new deep water quays , in the presence of an enormous gathering of people . The
weather was perfect , and as a consequence the function proved a grand success . The procession was in two parts , of which the first comprised the Borough members , the municipal authorities , the manager and directors of the London and South Western Railway Company , the officers of the Docks and Steam Packet
Departments , the Foreign Consuls , & c , & c , & c . ; while the second part consisted of the members of the local and other lodges , the oflicers present and past of the Prov . G . Lodge of Hants and Isle of Wight , with Bro . W . W . Beach , M . P ., Prov . G . Master , by whom
the ceremony was most impressively performed . We congratulate the Port of Southampton and the brethren of the Province on the complete success which attended the day ' s proceedings . » * *
To-day ( Friday ) another ceremony has taken place —the scene in this case being the Town Hall , Reading , when Bro . Lord Wantage , P . G . W . of England , has been installed Provincial Grand Master of Berkshire by Bro . Earl Amherst , D . G . M . of England , Prov . G . M . of Kent . It is eight years since H . R . H . thc
Prince of Wales , M . W . G . M ., took advantage of the opportunity afforded by the death , of the late Bro . Sir Daniel Goocb , Bart ., to separate the counties of Berkshire and Buckinghamshire , which had previously formed one Province under that respected Mason as Provincial Grand Master , and appointed the Duke of
Clarence and Avondale to preside over the one , and Bro . Earl Carrington over the other . But , unhappily , the Duke of Clarence did not long survive his induction into ollice , and from January , 1892 , until now Berkshire has been without a chief , the worthy Deputy ( Bro . J . T . Morland , P . G . D . ) having acted as Prov . G . Master . The interregnum is now at an end , and Bro .
Lord Wantage , who is one of the most popular men in the county , is now the responsible head of the brethren in Berkshire . We sincerely trust the connection of his lordship with the Province may be of long continuance , and that the latter may prove itself even stronger and more energetic under his auspices than it has under the Acting Prov . Grand Master .
* * A stated meeting of the York Lodge , No . 236 , will be held at the Masonic Hall , Duncombe-place , York , on Monday , the 17 th instant , when there will be submitted for the consideration and approval of the brethren the report which the Lod ge Extension
Committee have had prepared for them b y Bro . Hepper and which they recommend for adoption . Trie additions and alterations of the existing premises , though less extensive than under the original scheme , seem likely to prove improvements . They will involve an outlay of £ 700 and the Committee recommend that this sum
be raised by the brethren b y means of donations or by loans in shares of £ 5 each , bearing interest at the rate of two per cent , and repayable as the funds of the lodge will allow . The scheme is certainly a feasible one and as there can be no question that it will be of advantage to the lodge , we do not doubt that the Committee ' s recommendation in its favour will be adopted .
