Rothesay Lodge , No . 1687 . The London Masonic season recurs almost before the last of the summer weather has departed , and the lodges are found working with as much vigour as if there had been no recess . This was especially noticeable at the installation meeting of the Rothesay Lodge—which recently attained its majority—held at the Frascati Restaurant , on the 5 th inst . A sum of 10 guineas was voted to the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution to be placed on the W . Master's list , for which Bro . Terry returned grateful thanks . A Past Master ' s jewel was voted to Bro . Wartmann , and the lodge was closed . After an eniovable banquet , the usual toasts were heartily honoured .
Bro . Dr . G . Mickley , P . A . G . D . of C , replying for "The Grand Officers , " congratulated Bro . Catten on becoming the W . M . of this successful and charitable lodge . The members might well congratulate themselves on what had been done , and with fresh blood coming in there was every prospect of the good work being continued for many years to come .
Bro . T . J . Bolton , P . M ., said it was not often that a brother had the proud privilege of being in the 1 . P . M . ' s position for the second time and proposing " The Health of the Worshipful Master . " He was confident that no words were needed to recommend the toast . He remembered Bro , Catten ' s initiation , and had watched his career , and could say that each successive step had been well deserved and well carried out . Bro . Catten had at length attained the highest position the brethren could bestow ,
and they could only hope that during his year the Great Architect would give him health and strength to carry out the duties . That night the VV . M . had given them a fair sample of what he intended to do , for no Master on his installation ni g ht had ever worked the initiation ceremony in better style . time came to vacate the chair , he would be able to look back upon the preceding 12 months as amongst the happiest of his life . Bro . J . H . Catten , W . M ., who met with an enthusiastic reception , said he was much obliged to the acting l . P . M . for the splendid manner in which the toast had been submitted , and to the brethren for the loving way in which they had received it . That was , however , nothing more than he expected , for since his initiation he had met with
the greatest friendship from every member . He came to them as a stranger , and they made him a dear friend . Anything he could do in the future for the lodge would be done , and he hoped to their satisfaction . He had not , like Bro . Bolton , the gift of flowery speech , and they would , therefore , excuse him if he simply returned them his heartfelt thanks . " The Initiates , " was replied to by Bros . J . R . Madewell , H . A . King , and R . Willock .
Bro . J . Terry , P . G . S . B ., Sec . R . M . B . L , responded for "The Masonic Chanties . " He said that as they were aware a mighty Niagara of wealth had been flowing into the coffers of one Institution , the result being that as the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution required £ 19 , 000 , they had had to draw £ 5000 from their invested capital and would have to draw a similar sum in December . VV . M . Stiles , P . G . Treas ., of a Past Master ' s jewel . The handsome gift was duly acknowledged by the recipient , and other business of a routine nature having been transacted , the lodge was closed . After a well-served banquet , the customary toast list received attention . "The Grand Officers" was proposed in suitable terms by the W . M ., and briefly
responded to by Bros . W . M . Stiles , P . G . Treas ., and W . A . Scurrah , P . G . S . B . The former brother in his capacity as l . P . M . of the lodge , next proposed "The Worshipful Master , " and referred to the fact that Bro . Hudson held distinguished rank in Herts . It was with the greatest pleasure they saw Bro . Hudson in the chair of the lodge in which he was initiated , and it was a gieat honour to induct him into that position . The W . M . was like himself ( the l . P . M . ) a most modest man , and he would not , therefore , say too much in his praise . Bro . Hudson richly merited the position he
had attained , and had earned their encomiums for the manner in which he had conducted the duties that evening . The finest thing for an l . P . M . was to have a VV . M . who cculd do alt the work , for in most cases the l . P . M . got the credit . They would heartily and sincerely drink to the health and prosperity of the Worshipful Master . Bro . John Hudson , P . P . G . P . Herts , in reply , said that when he was so ably inflated into Freemasonry by Bro . Scurrah , he thought what a lot of work the W . M . had to do . He , however , thought it a goal worth going for , and went for it , and was proud to have
reached it . He felt he was following in the footsteps of a real W . M ., who knew his woik in the ledge and at lhe banquet table , and who could be relied upon to do his duties thorcu- > hly . He did not expect to reach such excellence , but would do his best and u ' most to meiit their approbation . He would remind them that when they moved to their present quarters they thought they could entertain the ladies , but had not done so . He hoped that this year they would be able to carry this out , and he hoped to make a proposition at the next meeting . He thanked the l . P . M . for his very kind remarks .
Bro . F . G . Lucas , replying for " The Initiate , " said there was no brother present wro had had a greater honour conferred upon him than he hid , and he would do his utmost to make himself worihy of that hon > ur . lhe W . M . next gave "Ihe Installing Master and Past Misters . " He said Ihat , a I hough unwell , Bro . Stiles had eclipsed his previous efforts as an Installing Master .
Bro . VV . M . S'iles , P G . 1 reas ., modestly replied that he had done his best todj his duly , and thanked Bro . Lewis , P . M ., for coming to the rescue and performing the ceremony of raising . Bro . W . A . Scurrah , P . G . S . B ., said the W . M . was the fourth of his initiates who had reached the chair in that lodge , and he hoped others would reach that position . Bros . A . H . M . of the lodge , next proposed "The Worshipful Master , " and referred to the fact that Bro .
Bros . A . H . Scurrah , P . M . j G . H . Lewis , P . M . j W . W . Langley , P . M . ; and
W . B . Parsons , P . M ., alio replied . "The Visitors" was acknowledged by Bros . Adam , W . M . j Stow , W . M . ; J . livine , P . M . j Dhidbury , W . M . j Dr . Lloyd , P . M . j and Smart , J . VV . Other toasts were given previous to the Tyler ' s toast closing the proceedings . Messrs . Osmond and Kloop contributed several banjo and mandoline duets , Miss Cissy Ramsey rendered two songs in pleasing style , and Bro . Walker gave a humorous recitation . Bro . Lane , Org ., presided at the pianoforte .
