Analysis Of The Returns.
SURREY will have good reason to be satisfied with its efforts during the present year . In 1892 tbe Returns , including £ 2148 gs . Gd . in respect of the Benevolent jubilee , amounted to £ 2817 19 s . Gd . ; in 1893 , to £ 913 3 s . Cd . ; in i 8 g 4 , when the late lamented Bro . Col . Money , C . B ., P . G . M ., presided at the Benevolent Festival , to £ 16 73 4 s . Cd ., of which £ 1399 2 s . was for the favoured Charity ; in 1895 , to
£ 1043 ios . ; and last year to £ 1068 4 s ; In February six of the 41 lodges on the roll , the chapter attached to a seventh , and two Unattached Stewards compiled a total of £ 325 12 s ., while on Wednesday 11 lodges and the chapter attached to one of them , together with a brother acting on his own account , together raised £ 622 7 s . Gd ., the principal lists being those of Bro . E . L . Berry , of the
Molesey Lodge , No . 2473 , East Molesey , for £ 115 ios . ; Bro . John Ellinger's , as Steward for the Frederick West Lodge , No . 2222 , East Molesey , for £ 91 7 s . ; of Bro . W . B . Hayward , George Price Lodge , No . 2096 , Croydon , for £ 81 18 s . ; Bro . Francis Neale ' s , Arnold Lodge , No . 1981 , East Molesey , for £ 70 ; and of Bro . G . R . Scott ' s , Dobie Lodge , No . 882 , Kingston-on-Thames , for £ 65 12 s . Gd . Thus the total raised up to the present time is £ 947 19 s . Gd .
After the hard work connected with the Benevolent Festival in February last , when H . R . H . the Duke of Connaught , Grand Master of the Province , occupied the chair , and the lodges and brethren supported his Royal Highness to the extent of £ 1263 2 s . 6 d ., it would not have been surprising if
SUSSEX had contented itself with a very modest Return . Yet seven of its 31 lodges entered an appearance on Wednesday , and the Stewards who represented them raised in all £ 205 9 s . 6 d . Thus the total at these two Festivals exceeds the totals forthe whole of 1896 , viz ., £ 1052 ; 1895 , amounting to £ 1254 gs . 6 d . ; 1894 , viz ., £ 127 ios . ; and 1893 , viz ., £ 1234 16 s . In 1892 , when the Benevolent Festival celebrated its Jubilee and the Duke , of Connaught presided at the
Festival of this Institution , the total was £ 2227 4 s ., the Benevolent Institution obtaining as its share of this sum £ 1155 Gs ., and the Girls School , £ 1026 55 . In 1891 , the total made up of £ 2 gi Gs . to the Old People , £ 323 18 s . Gd ., to this Institution , and £ 73 1 17 s . Cd . to the Boys' School , was £ 1344 2 s ., so that a very large sum has been raised during the six years and upwards to which we have referred , and the Province has every reason to be proud of the success of its efforts on behalf of our Cental Charities .
WARWICKSHIRE has done well so far during the present year . In February five out of its 31 lodges , represented by 16 Stewards , together raised £ 235 15 s ., and on Wednesday , three lodges which sent up nine Stewards compiled a total of £ 210 , of which ^ 136 ios . was handed in by Bro . Cornelius Chambers and his associate Stewards of the Bedford Lodge , No . 925 , Birmingham ; the two brethren who acted for the Fletcher Lodge , No . 1031 , also of Birmingham , raising ^ 61 15 s ,, and
Bro . W . Hillman , of the St . Alphege Lodge , No . 1431 , Solihull , the remainder . Last year , the Province distributed £ 981 13 s ., of which the Boys' School received not far short of one half , while in 1895 , the amount was . £ 1155 , including £ 525 paid for a Life Presentation to the Boys' School . In i 8 g 4 and 1 S 93 , the totals were £ 037 16 s . 3 d . in the former year , and £ 530 7 s . Cd . in the latter , but in 1892 , there was subscribed in all £ 2410 4 s ., of which the Benevolent Jubilee absorbed £ 2186 .
WORCESTERSHIRE which , since the consecration of the lodge named after the late respected Bro . Thomas R . Arter , has 14 lodges on its roll , did great service to the Benevolent Institution in February last , by subscribing towards its support a sum of ^ 504 , the Provincial Steward , Bro . Abraham Green , raising £ 33 6 , and Bro . Arter £ 84 . In 1896 , the total was £ 653 2 s . ; and in i 8 gS , £ 358 ; in 1894 , £ 193 os . Cd . ; in 1893 , £ 308 3 s . ; and in 1892 , £ 498 15 s . On Wednesday these lodges sent up lists amounting together £ 199 ios .
The Province of YORKSHIRE ( N . & E . ) was not represented at the Benevolent Festival in February , but on Wednesday there was a Steward acting for the Province as a whole , and three other brethren acting for as many lodges , the number on the roll being 34 . These four together compiled a sum of £ 127 15 s ,, of which £ 30 15 s . was on Bro . Hutchence ' s
list as Provincial Steward , and £ 70 on that of Bro . Harrowing , Lion Lodge , No . 312 , Whitby . Last year N . & E . Yorkshire raised £ 900 for the Old People , and smaller amounts , which increased the year's total to £ 1022 igs , for the two Schools . In 189 s the contributions were on a moderate scale , but in 1 S 94 they reached £ 441 15 s . ; in 18 93 , £ 424 4 s . ; and in 1892 , ^ 733 4 s ., of which . £ 711 gs . was in respect of the Benevolent Jubilee . There is no need for us to describe at length the sums raised year by year by
YORKSHIRE ( WEST RIDING ) for our three Institutions . Our readers are familiar with the efforts it makes in behalf of each of them . In February it contributed . £ 608 15 s . to the Old People , the number of Stewards being 26 ; and on Wednesday £ 420 to this Institution by the hands of 32 Stewards representing 13 lodges . Last year the total
subscribed to the three Charities was £ 2107 10 s . ; in 18 95 it was £ 1716 8 s . ; and in 18 94 ^ 6697 ss ., of which £ 4559 ISS - was raised for the Boys' School , at whose Festival Bro . W . L , Jackson , M . P ., Prov . G . M ., presided as Chairman . There is , as we have said , no need to go minutely into particulars , in the case of a Province which does such work as this .
There are but seven lodges in J ERSEY , and moreover , it is a Province which we do not seem to expect to include in these Returns . However , on Wednesday it subscribed £ 241 10 s . by the hands of Bro . Dr . le Cronier , and on previous occasions it has rendered equal or even greater service to this or the other Charities , as for instance in 1 893 , when it contributed £ 263 to the Boyii' School . Such lists as these are very welcome and highly creditable to so distant a Province .
FOREIGN STATIONS . There are four Stewards hailing from lodges in Foreign parts , of whom Bro . W . E . Cook , from Malta , is entered for £ 115 ios ., while the total from all sources , so far as is known to the present time , is £ izG ios . This sum , and especially Bro . Cook ' s portion of it , is also welcome , and we dare say Bro . Hedges would willingly enrol 40 such Stewards instead of four .
CONCLUDING REMARKS . It remains for us to express the hope that in our task of analysing the Returns and commenting on such points as seem to have called for comment , we have discharged our duty without in the slightest degree offending the susceptibilities of those concerned .
THE ARCHITECTURAL ASSOCIATION held a banquet at the Trocadero Restaurant , on the 5 th inst ., to celebrate its jubilee . The President , Mr .
