DEAR S IR AND BROTHER , I have the honour to offer myself as a Candidate for the office of Secretary of the above Institution on the retirement of Bro . I have recently retired from the Army Service Corps , after upwards of 20 years' service at home and abroad , and I am now 42 years of age . During the period of my service I have held several acting Colonial appointments of considerable trust and emolument , including that of Auditor-General of the West Africa Settlements . I served throughout the Ashantee War , 1873—74 , under Bro . Sir Garnet ( now Lord ) Wolseley . In 1881 , 1 was on the Special Staff of Bro . Sir Samuel Rowe , K . C . M . G ., Governor of the Gold Coast Colony ; and was afterwards employed for five years as Head of the Commissariat Department and Acting District Paymaster in the West African Command . The duties performed by the Army Service Corps ( late Commissariat and Transport Staff ) in connection with Barracks and Military Hospitals , are in many respects analogous to those performed by the Secretary in connection " " with the School ; amongst others , the charge of buildings and the provision ( by contract , purchase , or otherwise ) , and the accounting for all Food Fuel , Light , Bedding , Furniture , Medical Comforts , and Hospital Clothing . I , therefore , venture to think that the experience of office detail and the knowledge of accounts which I have acquired , mig ht be of considerable advantage to this Institution ; especially as I am led to understand that some improvement in the system of accounts is desirable . I attach a statement of my Masonic records , and beg to add that I am a Life-Governor of the Institution . I am , Dear Sir and Brother , Yours faithfully and fraternally , F . pHE INSTALLATION OF THE LORD MAYOR as W . M . of the DRURY LANE LODGE , at the MANSION HOUSE , Will form No . 3 of the Series of NOTABLE LODGE MEETINGS In our Next Week ' s issue .

To Correspondents.

To Correspondents .

INQUIRER . —There is no reason why a M . M . should not rehearse so much of the installation ceremony as is done in the lodge in presence of M . M . 's . DOUBTFUL . —There is no written law on the subject . A petition for a warrant must be signed by at least seven

brethren , and these are , of course , founders . But there is nothing to prevent other brethren , who are not petitioners , from having their share in the preliminary work and expenses , and who thus take rank as founders , and are to this extent on an equal footing with the petitioners . Several communications unavoidably stand over .

SATURDAY , FEBRUARY 15 , 1890 . ?¦

flDasonic Botes .

The festival of Drury Lane Lodge , following closely on that of the Savage Club , has provided another unique ceremony and entertainment for the jaded Craftsman in the shape of a lodge meeting and banquet within the sacred precincts of the Mansion House itself ,

with the Lord Mayor in the title-role , and we are bound to say that in the transfer of the " piece " from the boards of Old Drury it has in no way suffered . The Lord Mayor has proved himself as great in management and as chief actor as Augustus Druriolanus himself . The

whole of the proceedings were of the most enjoyable character . The old ball room made an admirable lodge room . Bro . Parkinson ' s impressive eloquence was heard at its best , the mellifluous accents of the

Lord Mayor were no less pleasant to the ear , and we doubt if the three chairs in any lodge were ever filled by more perfect masters of the elocutionary art than the Lord Mayor and Bros . Fernandez and Bancroft . * * *

The unqualified success of the day ' s proceedings , both in the lodge room and at the banquet , was largely due to the aid rendered by the newly-appointed

Secretary , Bro . J . H . Matthews , and Sir John B . Monckton . The latter , by desire of the Lord Mayor , represented the Mansion House , and relieved the responsible officers of a considerable amount of work .

• A- & The cry is , " Still they come , " and the lists of Stewards which we announced last week as consisting of 268 brethren , now musters 291 . This , though not quite so considerable an advance as the last we noted is , nevertheless , most gratifying , and we have no doubt that in the course of the next 10 days we shall fiuu our prophecy as to the Board for the approaching Festival being 300 strong , will be realised .

The Board , moreover , is very fairly constituted , the London section containing some 150 brethren , while the provinces muster some 133 representatives , Berks and Bucks , Essex , Kent , and a few others , being extremely well represented as far as numbers go .

Numbers , however , are not necessaril y a criterion of strength . It frequently happens that a province elects to be represented by one brother only , whose list

amounts to several hundreds of pounds , while in other cases , the private lodges in a province send up Stewards , whose lists , when taken together , reach not a higher total .

THE Freemason
