St . Aubyn Council . At the last meeting of this very flourishing council—the premier one of this beautiful degree in the United Kingdom—the 111 . Sov . Sir Knight A . Booth conferred the Degree upon two candidates in an impressive manner . After the regular business was finished SirKnigbt Booth announced that he had requested Past 111 . Sov . Sir Knight Shanks to tell them something about Constantine the Great and the city bearing the name of the founder of their Order , also that Sir Knight Shanks had kindlv complied .
and had come up from Bodmin for the purpose . Approval having been expressed by the knights , thev then had the pleasure of listening to a most interesting and instructive lecture on Constantine and Constantinople from the earliest times to the present , ably given by Sir Knight Major Shanks , K . M ., F . R . G . S ., and illustrated by a large number of beautiful views from his collection of lantern slides , the lantern being lent and worked by Sir Knight Farr . Sir Knight Major Shanks also exhibited a valuable oil painting of ss . Constantine and Helena which he secured at the capture of Sevastopol . The large number of knights present paid the utmost attention to the lecture , and
seemed to appreciate the entertainment fully . This Order having been founded by Constantine the Great as a check on the turbulent nobles of the empire , everything connected with his history and that of the wonderful city of his creation has a strong attraction for all its members . At the close of the proceedings Sir Knight Major Shanks received a most cordial and unanimous vote of thanks from the members for the pleasure he had afforded them . This lecture was quite a new departure in this branch of Freemasonry , and it is to be hoped that another ( on similar lines ) may be given ere long .
