Strict Observance Lodge , No . 27 . PRESENTATIONS TO BRO . G . K . B . ADAMS . The above lodge had a doubly interesting meeting on the 15 th ultimo , it being Commercial Travellers' night and a farewell to Bro . the Rev . G . K . B . Adams , Chaplain of the lodge . Bro . Robert Morton presided , and with the assistance of Bros . T . M . Davis , T . M . Lester , W . C . Breckenridge , and his own staff of officers , advanced two candidates , knights of the grip , to the Second Degree . After the work Bro . Morton , on behalf of the lodge , presented Bro . "To Bro . Rev . C . K . B . Adams . " Rev . and Dear Brother , " We have learned with regret that you are about to leave us , having been called to a new field of labour , and wish to extend to you our hearty congratulations for having been thought worthy of filling so important a charge as the Brant Avenue Church , Brantford . While we are very sorry to lose you from our midst , we feel that what is our loss will be their gain .
" We are tempted just here to place on record our disapproval of the itinerancy of the Methodist pulpit , for when a good man comes to a place he is not allowed to remain . True , when a ' sticket minister gets a charge his folk ken they hae but sae lang tae thole him . ' As a Mason and a member of the Lodge of Strict Observance you have won our hearts and have been an example and inspiration to us all , and I assure you we deeply regret your removal from our midst . As an officer of the lodge you have been most faithful in your attendance , and zealous in the discharge of your duties . You
have at all times been ready and willing to respond to any call we might make upon you , in fact so much so that I fear we have frequently imposed upon your good nature . " In losing you as an officer we feel that ont is leaving our midst whose place will be very hard to fill . Your brethren feel that they cannot allow you to leave them with , out expressing in some tangible way the high esteem in which you are held by them all , and as a slight token ask you to accept this time-piece . We did not select a clock with a view of reminding you that you should always keep good hours , nor did we select it
that your good wife might have a check on you when coming in a little late at night , but we feel that we would like to have you recall the many pleasant hours we have spent together in the Lodge of Strict Observance whenever your eyes turn to its face , and to think that it is always high twelve with us . BRO . H . W . MAYNE , W . M . No . 18 9 . A large circle ot Masonic brethren and friends will hear with unfeigned regret of the death of Bro . H . W . Mayne , which occurred recently at his residence , 11 , Queen Anne ' s-terrace , Plymouth . Bro . Mayne came to Plymouth some 10 years ago , and practised the profession of dentistry in Portland-square , whence he afterwards removed to Queen Anne ' s-terrace . For
some years Bro . Mayne has been troubled by an affection of the lungs , but during the last six months the mischief manifested itself in afar more acute form , and the result was that , acting on the advice of his medical attendant , he sought a change of air-by visiting the neighbourhood of Torquay . This was of little or no avail , and the deceased brother then decided on a journey to Egypt . He sailed from Plymouth about three months ago for Cairo , where some years ago
he was in business . But on reaching Naples he disembarked and returned overland to London , and thence to Plymouth . The change of air seemed to have benefited him slightly , but his condition was such that he was not allowed out evenings . Within the past week or two a very serious relapse took place , and on Tuesday it was realised that Bro . Mayne was in a very precarious state . The deceased , who was twice married , leaves a widow and five sons and daughters .
Bro . Mayne was , at the time of his death , holding the important office of W . M . of Lodge Sincerity No . 18 9 . His year of office was almost at an end , as the annual installation meeting of the lodge took place on Monday last . In the ordinary course this event would have been followed by the banquet , but under the sad circumstances that function was postponed . Instead of meeting at five p . m . Lodge Sincerity met at seven p . m . for the installation . A message of condolence on behalf of the lodge was conveyed to the family of our late brother .
