It was ordered that the thanks of the lodge to the various donors be entered in the minutes , and a special vote of thanks was tendered to Bro . Cama ior his numerous and valuable donations . Bro . Simpson read a paper "On the threefold Division of Temples . " Bro . Simpson is well known as a learned

architect , extensive traveller , in all climes , and expert artist , i he data adduced were made all the more interesting by the fact of their being almost entirely the results of the lecturer ' s own observations made on the spot , and the examples quoted ranged literally from " China to Peru . " The deductions refering to Symbolism and Freemasonry greatly enhanced the value of the paper , which was illustrated by many sketches and diagrams . Bro .

Cama favoured the lodge with some remarks on Parsi Temples , and Bro . Castle called attention to the Mexican Terrace Temples , but in view of the lateness of the hour Bros . Lewis , Wescott , Rylands , and others , consented to forward their share of the discussion to the Secretary in writing , and there can be no doubt that these additions from such capable brethren will greatly add to the enjoyment and instruction of the readers of the lodge transactions .

After a vote of thanks , the lodge was closed and the brethren adjourned to refreshment .

STERNDALE BENNETT LODGE ( No . 2182 ) . —The first installation meeting of this lodge following upon its consecration and constitution , was held at the Masonic Hall , Camberwell , on Saturday , the 7 th inst ., under circumstances of peculiar sadness , of which readers of the Freemason have been made acquainted . Just two days before the joyous feast of Christmas , many of the

brethren stood by the open grave into which was to be lowered the earthly tenement of the soul of a man and a brother who had endeared himself to many in the south of London , and in an especial degree to the members of the sterndale Bennett Lodge . Of that lodge Bro . George Venables was one of the earliest to take interest in its foundation in it he filled the office of SDand of it he

; .., kad hopedto have been in a few years the W . M . The G . A . O . T . U . decreed it otherwise , and so on the festival uay of the year , so far as the lodge is concerned , the brethren appeared in mourning , and did mourn the loss of a worth y man and Mason .

Ihe lodge was opened by Bro . Dr . H . Walmsley Little , and after the usual business had been transacted , Bro . Henry Yates presented himself as a candidate for the Sub-, l ^ gr ^ e , and was raised in an impressive manner by the W . M . The several offices in the lodge below the chair were subsequentl y declared vacant , and Bro . Col . Shadwell «• Clerke , G . S ., took the S . W . chair ; Bro . Rowland

Plumbe , P . G . Stwd ., that of the J . W . ; Bro . W . Worrell , P . M ., acted as I . G . ; and Bro . E . Stimison , P . M ., as D . C . Bro . G . F . Smith , jun ., P . M ., P . P . G . O . Essex , was then presented as the W . M . elect , and Bro . Little installed him in the chair of K . S . with the customary formalities . There was by this time a full lodge , and all watched with deep interest and admired the excellent working displayed . The

charges were particularly well given , and elicited warm approval . The second VV . M . of the Sterndale Bennett Lodge then invested his officers , viz : Bros . Guy , S . W . ; Cambridge , J . W . ; VV . S . Hoyte , S . D . ; J . H . Cureton , J . D . j J . E . Costello , I . G . ; G . Skudder , D . C ; H . L . Balfour , Org . ; Rev . J . St . Clare Hill , Chap . ; R . Clowes , Treas . ; Clifford , Sec . ; and H . ^ R . Hind and VV . H . Harper ,

Stwds . The audit report showed that the lodge was clear , financially , a result which few lodges have been able to show at the end of the first years of their existence . At this stage of the proceedings there was a slight pause , and silently the singing brethren grouped themselves around the organ , at which Bro . Hoyte was seated for the time , and then , all others standing , was sung with exquisite

taste and refinement the music of Sternaale Bennett , set to the words "God is a Spirit , " and arranged for male voices by Bro . John Hodges , gentleman of H . M . Chapel Royal , St . James' , and of St . Paul ' s Cathedral . At its close the brethren resumed their seats , and the silence which followed was broken by the voice of Bro . Clifford , who , with difficulty discharged the painful task of

formally communicating the news of the death of , Bro . Venables . Having told how he had carried out the directions of the VV . M . in obtaining a wreath , he eloquently eulogised the character of the departed , and mentioned how the lodge was represented at the last ceremony . Speaking oE that , Bro . Clifford said that as they stood by the open grave at Woking , on a gloomy day , there suddenly

came a gleam of light , which seemed to them to say that their departed brother had but come amongst them to cheer and enliven them , and then was taken away . In closing the worthy Secretary called upon the members and the visitors to remember the widow and orphans , and if asked to aid in ways well known , to do so . Bro . Richardson endorsed what had been said , and on

the motion of Bro . Little , seconded by Bro . Hill , it was resolved that a letter of condolence be sent to Mrs . G . Venables by the Secretary in the name of the lodge . The VV . M . then presented the I . P . M . with , the first jewel voted by the lodge ( manufactured by Bro . George Kenning ) , and expressed the pleasure it gave him to have that honour . After the expression of " Hearty

good wishes " from the visitors , who were in strong force , the lodge was closed . The next meeting place was in'the dining hall , where a recherche banquet was served , and the accompanying wines did infinite credit to the brother , or brothers , responsible for starting the private cellar of the lodge . The usual toasts were given , but oratory was not in it [ with the music ,

although several fluent , but brief , speeches were heard . The Grand Secretary was very complimentary in his remarks upon the working which he had witnessed , and said that the Sterndale Bennett Lodge , in the consecration of which he took part , had warranted the expectations which had been formed of it . For "The Visitors" Bro . Wingham , W . M . 25 , and Bro .

Turner , responded very eloquently . The latter congratulated the lodge on having as its Master a brother who had done excellent work in Essex , where Bro . Smith was held in high esteem , and hoped some day to see some representatives of No . 2182 at Colchester , where , if they could not excel them in hospitality or equal them in music , the heartiest of welcomes would be extended to them .

The musical arrangements of the evening were entrusted to Bro . John Hodges , who had the assistance of such talented vocalists as Bros . Guy , Strong , Sexton , Gilby , Bevan , and Lawler , with many others who rose from their places when called on to take part in some glee , such as " The winds whistle cold " or " King Canute . " The part songs were models of perfection , though Bro . Hodges now

and then seemed as if he would have liked it better , and special interest was manifested in one by Bro . VV . H . Harper , of the London Institute of Music This was sung for the first time , and is as yet unpublished . Rendered by Bros . Hodges , Guy , Strong , and Bevan , the skill and conception of idea of the composer were displayed to the full , and Bro . Harper was warmly

congratulated by his professional brethren . " Go , youth beloved , " by Bro . Guy , was another very fine example of a four-part song . This was first heard at the Orpheus Lodge , it is full of merit , and the words ( by Mrs . Opie ) render it peculiarly suitable for use at Masonic gatherings . There was but one instrumental solo , but such an one ! Bro . Hoyte played a " Valse Scherzo" ( by Moszkowski ) ,

after an apology had been offered by the W . M . for the absence of the grand pianoforte , which ought to have been on the spot . It was a marvellous piece of execution , and the piano was the only sufferer in the room . Thus with charming music and in genial company , the privileged

visitors to the Sterndale Bennett Lodge passed a delightful evening , and , Masonry apart , they all fully endorsed the sentiment conveyed in the words of David Garrick , which Bro . Hodges selected to appear on the title page of his " book of words" — " Hail , Music ! sweet enchantment , hail I

Like potent spells thy pow'rs prevail ; On wings of rapture borne away , All nature owns thy universal sway . M ., with a Past Master ' s jewel , which had been voted by the lodge in

recognition of his valuable services during the past year . and Demonology ; " Spiegel's "Avesta and the Genesis ;" " The Zoroastrian mode of disposing of the dead ; " Rhode ' s " Comparison of the Laws of Ormuzd with the Laws of Jehovah ; " and Alger's " Persian and Jewish Doctrinees ; " also the following discourses by K . R . Cama , viz— "On Freemasonry among the natives of Bombay ; " "On the Mithraic Worship ; " and " On Zoroastrians and Freemasonry ; " as also Karaka ' s " History

of the Parsis ; " and Geiger's "Civilisation of the Eastern Iranians , " translated by Sanjana .

Rowland
