THE mystery of Bro . ARCHIBALD MCNEILL ' disappearance Late Bro . A . when on the eve of returning to England from his hurried visit McNeill . tQ t ^ ne ighbourhood of Rouen has at length been solved , and there appears , from the post mortem examination of the body , to be no reason to doubt that our unfortunate brother came by his death by foul means .

Already a man has been arrested , and identified as having been in his company shortly before his disappearance , and the French police will no doubt pursue their inquiries with the energy and shrewdness which is characteristic of that body . As regards our late brother , though he was comparatively a young man , and had been a member of the Craft for a few years only , his

genial qualities had secured him troops of friends and well-wishers , who are now deeply lamenting the premature and violent death of one for whom so bright a career had been anticipated . As a founder and the Secretary of the Savage Club Lodge , Bro . MCNEILL had already made his mark

amongst us and he would certainly have attained still greater distinction had his life been prolonged . To his family , his numerous friends , Masonic and non-Masonic , and especially to the members of the Gallery Lodge , in which he was initiated , and the Savage Club Lodge , with which he had been so closely associated , we offer this expression of respectful sympathy .

OUR readers will have no doubt noticed from our adver-The Poore tisement columns of the last few weeks that an influential Testimonial . Committee has lately been formed for the purpose of presenting

a testimonial to Bro . THOMAS POORE , P . M ., P . Z ., who has for some years past been one of our ablest and most successful preceptors in the different branches or systems of Masonry , whether Craft , Arch , Mark , Cryptic , or what not . Bro . POORE , who was initiated in 1868 , is in the 73 rd year of his age , and , we regret to say , has just experienced some losses which were

quite unforeseen , and from which , having regard to his advanced age , it seems difficult , if not impossible , for him to recover . Under these circumstances we do not hesitate to press the subject upon the notice of our readers , many of whom must have benefited by Bro . POORE ' S instruction , and must also have learned to esteem and respect him as a kindly and

genial brother Mason , who was always ready to do others a good turn , as well as one of the best and most conscientious exponents of our various rituals and ceremonies . Bro . ALFRED WILLIAMS is Chairman . Bro . D . P .

WE congratulate our worthy Bro . HUBERT , the responsible la chame ecjitor 0 f £ a Chaine d'Union , on the success which hasattended it Union . his labours . His estimable journal was established in London in 1864 and was removed to Paris in 1 S 69 . It has thus had an existence

of 24 years , during the whole of which period its direction has been in the hands of Bro . HUBERT , who has known no other object than so to conduct his review as to enable it to contribute most successfully to the interests of

Freemasonry ; and it is in the same spirit of devotion that he has entered on his task for the year 1888 . We wish Bro . HUBERT all the f good fortune which he himself can desire , and that he may be spared still many years to conduct his journal with the same ability as in the past .

CONSECRATION OF THE ADAIR CHAPTER , No , 1750 , AT CLEVEDON .

A meeting of the Provincial Grand Chapter of Somerset was held at the Public Hall , Clevedon , on Friday , the 6 th inst ., for the purpose of consecrating the above chapter . The chairs of the Principals were filled as under ; Comps . A . W . Adair , G . Supt ., as Z , ; R . C . Else , P . G . Std . Br ., as H . ; and T . B . Moutrie , as J . ; and by those officers the ceremony of

consecration was conducted . Subsequently the following were installed as the three Principals ; Comps . W . Long , T . L . Barnes , and T . J . Scoones ; the other officers being Comps . Rev . Vaughan , Prin . Soj . ; M . H . Clark , Asst . Soj . ; W . Reece , S . E , ; Langworthy , S . N . ; A . F . Rose , D . C ; and Thatcher , Org .

An oration , explanatory of the Degree , was given by Comp , ELSE , after which several names were submitted for exaltation . On the Provincial Grand Chapter resuming , the sum of 30 guineas was voted to the Girls' School .

CONSECRATION OF ST . GEORGE'S MARK LODGE , No . 383 .

The new lodge of St . George of Mark Master Masons , No . 383 , was consecrated on Friday , the 6 th inst ., in Sincerity Lodge room , St . George ' s Hall , Stonehouse . The handsome lodge room presented an attractive

appearance . It is four years since St . George ' s Craft Lodge was founded on temperance principles , and it has been remarkably successful ; and a Royal Arch Chapter was opened two years ago in connection with the same lodge .

Bro . H . STOCKER , 18 , P . P . J . G . W ., P . G . Sec , who travelled aconsiderable distance to be present , congratulated the breihren of the new lodge on having such a large and influential number .

The ceremony of consecration was ably performed , and the proceedings passed off most successfully . The brethren of St . George ' s Lodge are to be heartily congratulated on the excellent arrangements made under the direction of Bro . F . Crouch , P . G . D . England , whose Masonic zeal and

The DEPUTY PROV . GRAND MASTER then addressed the founders on the nature of the meeting , pledging them to obey the laws and Constitutions of the Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons , and delivering a short address on their duties to Masonry generally and themselves in particular . The P . G . SECRETARY then read the petition of the brethren , saying that , although there was a Mark Lodge in connection with Lodge Sincerity , the

brethren wished to have a Mark Lodge ot their own , conducted entirely on temperance principles—that had been their guiding aim in connection with St . George ' s Craft Lodge and Arch Chapter . The warrant having been read , the brethren signified their approval of the officers named in the petition and warrant , and the ceremony of consecration was carried out very impressively .

Stocker having to leave to catch his train , The WORSHIPFUL MASTER thanked him on behalf of the brethren for his attendance and assistance . Bro . STOCKER acknowledged the compliment , and congratulated the lodge on starting under such auspicious circumstances .

The WORSHIPFUL MASTER then addressed the brethren , remarking how successful St . George ' s Craft Lodge and Chapter had been . He was thankful to the brethren for electing him unanimously as Worshipful Master , and was exceedingly proud ot his position . He moved a cordial vote of thanks to the Consecrating Officers and others who assisted that

day . Bro . GIFFORD seconded the resolution , which was carried unanimously . Bro . C S . BATE , in returning thanks , said the brethren had taken a particular line to work their lodge , and had been rewarded with success , He heartily wished them success in their latest venture , and in commemoration of that day would appoint Bro . G . R . Barrett as P . S . G . O .

The Worshipful Master and brethren of the new lodge having received the congratulations of the brethren , the lodge was closed . In the evening the brethren dined together at Bro , H . Matthews ' s restaurant in Bedford-street .

BY BRO . W . J . HUGHAN . The Lodge of " Fortitude , " No . 64 , Manchester , is now working by virtue of a Warrant of Confirmation , bearing date May ist , 1772 , but it was originally constituted on January 9 th , 1739 , by the R . W . Bro . Edward Entvvistle , Prov . G . M . of Lancashire , who was appointed the first Chief of

that province in 1734 . The particulars of the Constitution , however , do not appear to have been forwarded to head-quarters in due course , the lodge for a few years working without being acknowledged by the Grand Lodge

of England . In 1744 , however , it was placed on the Engraved List as No . 165 , which position had been vacated by the lodge held at the Flowerpot , Bishopsgate-street , London , which was erased on April 9 th , 1743 . Strange to say , this London lodge originally took the position vacated by a

The DEPUTY PROV . GRAND MASTER then addressed the founders on the nature of the meeting , pledging them to obey the laws and Constitutions of the Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons , and delivering a short address on their duties to Masonry generally and themselves in particular . The P . G . SECRETARY then read the petition of the brethren , saying that , although there was a Mark Lodge in connection with Lodge Sincerity , the

brethren wished to have a Mark Lodge ot their own , conducted entirely on temperance principles—that had been their guiding aim in connection with St . George ' s Craft Lodge and Arch Chapter . The warrant having been read , the brethren signified their approval of the officers named in the petition and warrant , and the ceremony of consecration was carried out very impressively .

Stocker having to leave to catch his train , The WORSHIPFUL MASTER thanked him on behalf of the brethren for his attendance and assistance . Bro . STOCKER acknowledged the compliment , and congratulated the lodge on starting under such auspicious circumstances .

The WORSHIPFUL MASTER then addressed the brethren , remarking how successful St . George ' s Craft Lodge and Chapter had been . He was thankful to the brethren for electing him unanimously as Worshipful Master , and was exceedingly proud ot his position . He moved a cordial vote of thanks to the Consecrating Officers and others who assisted that

day . Bro . GIFFORD seconded the resolution , which was carried unanimously . Bro . C S . BATE , in returning thanks , said the brethren had taken a particular line to work their lodge , and had been rewarded with success , He heartily wished them success in their latest venture , and in commemoration of that day would appoint Bro . G . R . Barrett as P . S . G . O .

The Worshipful Master and brethren of the new lodge having received the congratulations of the brethren , the lodge was closed . In the evening the brethren dined together at Bro , H . Matthews ' s restaurant in Bedford-street .

OLD WARRANTS . —VI .

BY BRO . W . J . HUGHAN . The Lodge of " Fortitude , " No . 64 , Manchester , is now working by virtue of a Warrant of Confirmation , bearing date May ist , 1772 , but it was originally constituted on January 9 th , 1739 , by the R . W . Bro . Edward Entvvistle , Prov . G . M . of Lancashire , who was appointed the first Chief of

that province in 1734 . The particulars of the Constitution , however , do not appear to have been forwarded to head-quarters in due course , the lodge for a few years working without being acknowledged by the Grand Lodge

of England . In 1744 , however , it was placed on the Engraved List as No . 165 , which position had been vacated by the lodge held at the Flowerpot , Bishopsgate-street , London , which was erased on April 9 th , 1743 . Strange to say , this London lodge originally took the position vacated by a
