W . H . Kempster , P . Z . 766 , S 90 ; G . Harlow , 1572 ; and W . W . Lee , 1524 . The chapter having been formally opened , the minutes of the last convocation were read and confirmed . Comps . A . T . Pearce and Chas . Greenwood were inducted into the respective chairs of M . E . Z . and J . Owing to the unavoidable absence of Comp . Hemming , the H . elect , his

installation was postponed until the next convocation . The following officers were invested : Comps . W . J . Collens , S . E . ; W . E . Williams , S . N . ; A . W . G . Weeks , Treas . ; W . E . Birch , P . S . ; W . Radcliffe , ist A . S . ; C . J . Craig , 2 ndA . S . ; J . B . Stevens , D . C ; and Goddard , Janitor . Comp . H . J . Lardner , P . Z . 907 , P . G . S . B . Surrey , was unanimously elected a joining member , the M . E . Z .

expressing his gratification that such an excellent companion had joined their ranks , but regretting his absence . The Scribe E . was instructed to write to Comp . the Kt . Hon . P . De Keyser , Lord Mayor , congratulating him on his accession to office , and inviting him to attend the next meeting of the Fidelity Chapter , in which he was exalted in 1 S 6 . -5 .

Other business having been transacted , the convocation was closed , and the companions adjourned to Freemasons' Tavern , where an excellent banquet was served . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were subsequently duly honoured . " The Health of the M . E . Z . " was proposed by Comp . Rev . J . Amos , I . P . Z , who expressed the pleasure itafforded

him to bring the toast to the notice of the companions . He wished , however , that the companion whom they had installed into the chair of M . E . Z . that evening had bad the task to perform , as he would have proposed the toast with suitable and graceful eloquence . Comp . Pearce , their newly installed M . E . Z ., was in every way suited to fill the high position to which he had been called . Some brethren and

companions were well acquainted with the ritual , but looked severe when presiding at the banquet table . Their M . E . Z ., however , united all the good qualities necessary for a successful occupant of the chair , both in the chapter room and at the table afterwards . The companions were happy in their selection of a M . E . Z ., for he did not know a companion who knew the ritual more thoroughly than

Comp . Pearce . He asked the companions to join him in heartily drinking the health of their M . E . Z . Comp . A . T . Pearce , M . E . Z ., said that in rising to respond to the toast of his health he must confess that he did not feel quite as comfortable as he had in the previous offices , but presumed it was to be attributed to the large array of Masons he saw around him . He felt

complimented by the remarks of the l . P . Z . in bringing the toast to the notice of the companions . Comp . Amos had referred to him as a good , hard-working Mason , and he hoped he should prove himself to be one . He was exalted in that chapter about 1 S 7 S , and was then much impressed by the manner in which the ceremony was carried out by one who had now departed this life—Bro . Greenwood .

That exaltation ceremony made a deep impression on him , for he thought it was most beautiful , and exceeded in beauty the ritual of Craft Masonry . It was an incentive to him to climb to the chair , and although he was kept from that position for some time , he had had the experience of passing through the various minor offices . He hoped to be able to give them an evidence of his earnest endeavour

to sustain the reputation of the I'idelity Chapter , and was sure he would beencouraged and supported by the members . He felt deeply the compliment paid him by the companions , and thanked Comp . Amos in particular for the kind manner in which he proposed the toast . He sincerely wished them one and all a happy and prosperous new year . The M . E . Z . then said a very pleasing duty devolved

upon him to return in some measure the compliment paid him by the l . P . Z ., for he had to propose " Ihe Health of Comp . Rev . J . Amos , l . P . Z . " They all thanked that companion for the excellent manner in which he had discharged the duties of the chair during the past 12 months . He was sure their l . P . Z . had added to the reputation of their chapter by his impressive and admirable working . The

amiable character of Comp . Amos was so well known to them that it would be invidious for him to expatiate upon it . He trusted the l . P . Z . would be spared for many years to be with them , and he hoped the example set by Comp . Amos would be beneficial to him ; elf and the other companions , lt was now his pleasure to present Comp . Amos with a P . Z . ' s jewel , which had been unanimously voted by

the members , and which he had fairly earned . It carried with it the good wishes of every companion in the chapter for his good health and prosperity in the future . Comp . Rev . J . Amos , I . P . Z ., thanked the companions for the reception accorded the toast , and also for the jewel , which he hoped to wear for many years with pride and pleasure . The interest and industry evinced by the officers

during the past year had assisted in the perfection ot the work , and he was indebted to each individual officer for cordial support and co-operation . He again thanked them for the honours bestowed upon him , and for their assistance during his term of office . " the P . Z . ' s " was next given by the M . E . Z . in cordial terms , and appropriately responded to by Comps . Graves ,

P . Z ., and McDougall , P . Z . In prooosing "The H . and J ., " the M . E . Z . expressed his regret , which , he was convinced , was shared by the companions , that Comp . Hemming was unable to be present to be installed in the chair of H . They were , however , pleased that he had been enabled to join them at the banquet table , and hoped to see him duly installed as H . at

the next meeting . 'I hey had had evidence of his good work in the past , and would no doubt see him fulfil the duties of the office to which he had been elected in an able manner . The companions had elected a companion as J . who bore the distinguished name of Greenwood . That name had a

pecu . iar charm in their chapter , and he therefore heartily welcomed Comp . Chas . Greenwood in the chair of J . on that occasion . He hoped that companion would be spared to live in the hearts of Masons as long as his distinguished father had done Comp . Hemming , H . elect , having returned thanks ,

Comp . Chas . Greenwood , J ., responded , and expressed his obligation to the M . E . Z . tor the kind and encouraging words he had used in proposing the toast . It was no small satisfaction to him to find himself in the position occupied by his father 35 years ago , and to find that his memory was still green in the chapter . It had always been his ambition to follow in his father ' s footsteps , and to endeavour to attain the altitude that he attained . There was no position that would gratify him more than to hold office in their old

Royal Arch.

chapter , and he cordially thanked the companions for their kindness and forbearance in the past . The M . E . Z . then proposed " The Visitors , " expressing his pleasure at their presence , and extending to them a cordial welcome on behalf of the members of the chapter .

The visiting companions having replied , The Treasurer and Secretary " and "The Officers" were given and respectively responded to , after which the Janitor ' s toast closed a successful and thoroughly enjoyable evening . During the evening the toasts were interspersed with some excellent music by Bro . Bevan .

C ; Emblin , Steward ; Whiting , Janitor ; and a good muster of

companions and visitors . The chapter having been opened , the minutes of the previous convocation were read and confirmed . A ballot was taken for Bro . Wm . Newby , 1 G 04 , which proving unanimous , he was exalted into Royal Arch Masonry in a most admirable manner by the M . E . Z . and his officers , all proving themselves efficient in the working of their several

offices . The chapter was then closed , and the M . E . Z . and companions adjourned to the Pillar Room , and an excellent repast was provided by Bros . Clemow , and a most pleasant and musical evening was spent . The usual loyal and Royal Arch toasts were received by the companions in a trul y Masonic spirit . Comp . Day , a visitor , presided at the pianoforte .

Bevan .

Comp .
