Asconnected with the Nors Guilds , the Oriental and Mcdiaival building Fraternity . By GEOUGE F . FORT . EXTRACT rliOM AUTHOR ' S PREFACE . The Work is the result of years of labour , whose original and persistent desi _ tn"iias uniformly been to arrive at truth . In no instance are traditions resting on unsubstantial ground adeh-. ceel as corroborative testimony of the line of research which , after careful examination of facts , he has adopted . Mere legends or guild !* tales elo not appear in this book , unless produced in lhat poition oi the tre-atise abandoned expressly to the traditional history of the Fraternity . In a word , the constant ami invariabletenelency of the author in the ensuing pages is to bring thc history and ant ' npiities oi the Craft down to an undisputed historical basis ; and , in the pursuance of . his subject , he was frequently compelled to abandon the usual track followeel liy writers on this subject , and to rely upon authorities uheise testimony—found noted in the margin—will be accepted without suspicion of intemperate or uncritical zeal . The immediate argument and scope of the treatise may be brieily stated is follows : To commence wilh a narrative of the slate of tine arts it the decline of the Roman Empire , and also of the propagation of architecture and its kindred sciences h , ' bodies of builders , who developed into lhe Mieldie-Age l'rceinasons , whose history is carried down to lhe forma ! extinction of the society as an operative brotherhood in the \ ear 1717 . STANDARD WORKSON FREEMASONRY Svo , cloth , Third edition , revised and enlarged , 154 . THE EARLY HISTORY AND AN-1 TJOUITTES OF FREEMASONRY . Amon >; the several appendices will be found a contribution to the History of the Lost Word , together with olher •aluable documentary evidence , which is added to make lhe raine .. lore vcrptahle to the public and Fraternity at large . ~
