THE LATE BRO . A . G . MACKEY .

Masonry suffers the loss of one of its most illustrious members by the death of Bro . Mackey . He was eminent for his learning and Masonic attainments , while for two score years or more he had shown an unfaltering attachment to the interests of the Craft . As a writer in alt departments of Masonic literature Bro . Mackey had made himself known among the Fraternity everywhere , and his

published works have given him a commanding influence . In all matters of Masonic law and jurisprudence Mackey is commonly referred to as the best authority , and his " Encyclop ; cdia of Masonry" is a rich fountain of knowledge from which intelligent Craftsmen are continually obtaining supplies . Among other valuable works that he has published the following may be named : "Lexicon of Masonry , " "Masonic Parliamentary Law , " "Manual of

the Lodge , "Symbolism of Freemasonry , " and " Handbook of the Chapter . " He has also written a large number of magazine articles on various matters pertaining to Masonic history and work , and the Craft is greatly indebted to him for the use he has made of his pen . Bro . Mackey was an ardent admirer of Masonry as a philosophy and a science , while all its symbolic teachings were to him a delightful source of investigation and

instruction . He devoted much of his best thought to an examination of the principles that are at the foundation of the Masonic system , and it is the productiveness of his thought and study thus applied which constitute his abiding memorial . None the less , however , did our eminent brother show an interest in the actual work and present prosperity of the fraternity . He was both a worker with and a leader of his brethren , who often called him to fill important

positions . At one time he was Grand High Priest of the General Grand Chapter . Bro . Mackey was always glad to mee ; with the brethren to consider the means of promoting the welfare of the Institution , or to enjoy a social hour . He was a true Mason in thought , sentiment and character , and his death will be greatly regretted , not only by his persona ! friends , but by a much " larger circle of

appreciative brethren . Bro . MACKEY died at Fortress Monroe on the 20 th of June , being in his seventy-fifth year . His home was in Charleston , S . C ., which place he had left only a few days previous , thinking to find a benefit b y change of air and location . This was not to be , for the time of his departure from earth had come . Peacefully he passed on to join

" 1 he innumerable throng , which moves To that mysterious rcaim . " Masonry is something the richer and stronger because of his connection with it , and the services which he rendered in its behalf . His work remains , and his memory is blessed . —Freemasons' Repository .
