THE DUKE OF PORTLAND , the Duke of Norfolk , the Duke of Buccleuch , the Duke of Argyll , Bro . the Duke of Bedford , the Archbishop ot Canterbury , Earl Cadogan , the Earl of Meath , Bro . the Earl of Derby , Cardinal Vaughan , the Chief Rabbi , and other distinguished gentlemen have issued an appeal with the view of adequately endowing and establishing on a permanent basis Queen Victoria ' s Nurses ' Endowment Fund . Its object is to train nurses to attend the ~ sick poor in their homes , and her late Majesty handed over to it the . £ 70 , 000 collected as the Jubilee offering of
the women of bn ^ land . The work of the institute in London , on its present scale , involves an expenditure of about £ Sooo a year . Nearly 900 Queen's nurses are now engaged in tending the poor in their own homes in all parts of tne United Kingdom , and if only sufficient funds were forthcoming no town ' or district would be without one . But the number would have to be multiplied at least three times before the council or their fellow-countrymen can feel that they have in any sense completed the work . This would mean an additional expenditure of at least £ 20 , 000 a year , and hence the present appeal .
