Bro . Rothschild , in reply , expressed his sincere thanks for the kind remarks of Bro . Davies . He had

The Masons of Gloucestershire , his native county , have evinced a very warm and highly commendable interest in this movement to perpetuate the name of one who did so
much good in his day , and whose memory should be dear to all those who venerate any institution that is based upon the elimination of the broad principles of charity , morality , and education . The lodge having been duly closed , the brethren adjourned to refreshment . Upon the removal of the cloth the usual toasts were duly honoured , but in consequence of its being an " off night" they were

resulted in an additional £ 31 12 s ., making a total of £ 52 12 s . as the contributions of the evening . Much regret was expressed at the unavoidable absence of P . M . the Rev . Dr . Ernest Brette , whose courtesy and loyalty to the brethren of the lodge and the Craft have won for him the attachment and affection of all who know him .
SUNDERLAND . —Phoenix Lodge ( No . 94 ) . —The usual meeting of this lodge was held on Wednesday , the 3 rd inst ., at the Freemasons' Hall , Gtueen-strcet , and after the usual routine of business was over , Bro . John Potts , P . P . G . J . D ., W . M ., in a very feeling speech , presented Bro . Marsh Frampton , I . P . M ., with a handsome
and valuable gold Past Master ' s jewel , set with a diamond . This testimonial was subscribed for by brethren of the lodge in token of their esteem for Bro . Frampton , and to mark their appreciation of his valuable services during his year of office as W . M . Bro . Frampton made a very touching and appropriate reply .. A very enjoyable evening was spent by the brethren .
GIBRALTAR . — Inhabitants Lodge ( No . 153 , E . C ) . —The regular meeting of this lodge took place on the 2 nd ult ., under the presidency of the W . M ., Bro . Broster White , supported by Past Masters Bacon , Conroy , and Cunningham , and Ross of 325 ( I . C . ) . Thc business was to raise Bro . Banks , and present a Master Mason ' s jewel from Lodge Roman Eagle , 160 ( S . C . ) , to Bro . Gunn
of that lodge . The lodge having been raised to the requisite height , Bro . Banks was duly received into that Honourable Degree at the hands of the W . M . It was then lowered , and Bro . Gunn was presented before the dais by Past Masters Cunningham andConroy . The W . M . alluding to the work done for 160 ( S . C . ) by Bro . Gunn , said it afforded him the very greatest pleasure in having the
opportunity of bestowing such a substantial memento on so worthy a brother , as evinced from the remarks of the R . W . M . of Roman Eagle Lodge , who expressed thc appreciation of the brethren for his ability and unceasing exertion . In conclusion he hoped Bro . Gunn would live many years to wear that gift , and to do honour to the Craft . The jewel was a five-pointed star with blue enamel
in gold embracing a brilliant , while the gold bar across the crimson ribbon was engraved with " Presented to Bro . W . Gunn , Colour Sergeant , 79 th Highlanders , as a fraternal token of esteem and rgar 4 from Lodge Roman Eagle , 160 ( S . C . ) Edinburgh , July , 1879 . " Bro . Gunn in responding said , whatever he had done for Lodge Roman Eagle it was performed for the good of Masonry , and in so
doing he never dreamt of receiving such a beautiful present . He was exceedingly gratified , and he would not fail to transmit the " Hearty good wishes " of this lodge to 1 G 0 ( S . C ) , as requested . The W . M . said it was with regret he had to announce the departure of a good many old Masons and good brethren by the transfer of the Royal Engineers and 23 rd R . W . Fusiliers to Old England , and he took that
opportunity on behalf of the lodge of bidding them farewell , also wishing them a prosperous voyage , with success in future life . Past Master Conroy and P . J . W . Leys , in responding , intimated they would often think of the happy hours spent among the brethren of this lodge , which they trusted would continue to flourish as it had done during the last three or four years , about which there could be
but little doubt , as year by year it was progressing in its working and in funds , and though they were going away , would remain members of the lodge . After two propositions for initiation , and one for joining , the lodge was closed in ancient form . The brethren then retired to the
banquet hall , where after supper , supplied by the wellknown and accomplished Steward , Bro . Azopardi , the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given , and the following brethren assisted to fill in a very enjoyable evening by various excellent songs : Bros . Stillman , Gunn , Lyons , Livingstone , Bacon , Crompton , Ogg , Allen , and Button .
LEICESTER . —St . John ' s Lodge ( No . 279 ) . — The usual monthly meeting of this lodge was held on Wednesday , the 3 rd inst ., at the Masonic Hall , Halfordst > -eet . The W . M ., Bro . the Rev . J . H . Smith , was in the chair , and there was a very large attendance , including , as usual , a good number of visitors from the sister lodges . After the transaction of the ordinary business , a most
interesting proceeding took place , in the presentation to the lodge of a magnificent silver loving cup by the ex-Mayor of Leicester , W . Bro . Alderman Clement Stretton , P . M ., ' P . P . S . G . W ., in recognition of the kindly feeling shown to hint by the members of the lodge . Bro . Stretton , as Leicester people all know , has twice , filled the office of Mayor , and he has also been twice elected to preside over the senior
lodge of the province ^ St . John ' s ) . The esteem in which he is deservedly held by all the brethren was abundantly testified the other day on the occasion of the presentation of his portrait , to be hung on the walls of the lodge amongst the portraits of the many other worthies whose names are honoured in the Craft . In presenting the loving-cup , Bro .
Stretton feelingly alluded to the many acts of kindness which had been done to him by the members of St . John ' s , his mother lodge , during the seventeen years he had been connected with Masonry , and concluded by asking the W . M . to accept the cup , as a slight acknowledgment on bis part of the kindly feeling he on his part had towards them

M ., vacated the chair , and Bro . Munn was duly raised by the I . P . M . to the Degree of M . M . The ballot was then taken upon behalf of Bro . Appleton as a joining member , and it proved to be unanimous .
Previously to the lodge being closed the sum of one guinea was unanimously voted to the fund for raising a statue . to the memory of Mr . Raikes , the founder of the Sunday School Union , who flourished in the last century .
Upon the removal of the cloth the usual toasts were duly honoured , but in consequence of its being an " off night" they were
shorn of much of their formality and length . In response to " The Health of the Visitors , " Bro . T . Poore , among other things , paid a very high compliment to the lodge upon its " working" capabilities . "The Past Masters " followed , and it w _ s acknowledged by Bros . Walls , Koch , Higgins , and Everett . The latter brother as usual made
a very humorous response . "Ihe Health of the I reasurer and Secretary " came next in order , and it was replied to by Bro . Stuart , Secretary , in the absence of Bro . W . Mann , Treasurer . The toast of "The Officers" was coupled with the name of Bro . Speedy , S . W . The Tyler having been called upon to discharge his duty , the proceedings terminated at an early hour .

M ., Bro . the Rev . J .
