ALPASS BENEVOLENT INSTITUTION .
For the second year in succession thc annual festival in connection with the West Lancashire Alpass Benevolent Fund was held at the Hotel Metropole , Blackpool , on Wednesday afternoon , the 25 th ult . The Institution has been founded with the sole object of providing annuities for the widows of deceased brethren in the West Lancashire province , and the festival is the principal social gathering amongst Freemasons in this part of Lancashire . The event was one of the most successful ever held , the arrangements being splendidly organised and carried out .
The post of honour had been conferred on Bro . G . Harradon , P . P . G . T ., by his being elected President for the festival . During the 21 years of his Masonic career he was elected Prov . G . Treasurer about 10 years ago . He was a founder and first Master of Prince's Lodge , No . 2316 , and was again elected W . M . of that lod ge about four years ago . He was initiated in the Wilbraham Lodge , of which he is a Past Master , and has also passed through the chair of the Lathom Lodge , No . 2229 , and at present is its Treasurer . He is also a P . Z . of the Hamer
Chapter , and P . P . G . Treasurer of West Lancashire ( Royal Arch ) . He is a P . M ; of thc Clarence Mark Lodge , No . 447 , and P . P . S . G . W . of the Prov . Grand Mark Lod ge of Lancashire ; P . M . W . S . of the Crawford Rose Croix Chapter ; P . G . D . Allied Degrees ; and a member of 30 ' , and knight of St . George ' s Preceptory . hor these services and his self-denying labours in connection with the Masonic Charities , his brethren unanimously had placed him in the highest position it was in their power to bestow . The local Committee had for its Chairman Bro .
Edmund Taylor , P . G . S ., and preparations for the banquet were made by Bro . W . R . Brandwooil , P . P . G . D ., who also acted as Hon . Treasurer to the Festival Lommiltee . Altogether 200 persons sat down to , a sumptuous repast , whicii was excellentl y served by Bro . Stevenson , the m . inage ' r of the Hotel Metropole . Bro . Lieut .-Col . J . D . MURRAY , P . G . Whatever donations were given—and every subscription was given voluntarily—it went without any deduction for expense ! of any kind direct to the purposes for which it was intended . By these meanj they had kept a number of widows from applying for parish relief . "TheChairman of the Festival , Bro . Geo . A . Harradon , " wis proposed by
Bro . ROBERT WVME , who said that of all the brethren he had met during tin many years he had been associated with Freemasonry , he had never met a brother who had discharged his duty equal to Bro . Hirradon . For a numoer of years he had been Hon . Treasurer of the Alpass Institution , and without his assistance it could never have reached such a position financially and in usefulness as it had attained that dav .
Bro . HARRADON , in reply , said he felt it an honour to occupy the position of Chairman for the year , and remarked that when he was appointed the Treasurer seven years ago there were 25 annuitants : at the present time there were 70 , ani between ^ 1100 and ^ 1200 per annum was expended , while there were four more applicants under consideration . Since the formation of the Institution , the brethren of the province had paid something like . £ 19 , 000 to the cause alone , to say nothing of what they subscribed towards the support of three other Binevolent Institutions of Freemasonry .
Bro . T . HENSIIAW then announced that the donations amounted to £ 1406 14 s ., which had been surpassed only once since the foundation , and was . £ 200 better than last year . "The Ladies" was proposed by Bro . Dr . CRAWFORO , after which formality was dispensed with , and a most enjoyable lime ensued , songs being given by Misi Alice Aineworth , Bro . W . Bro . ROBERT WVME , who said that of all the brethren he had met during tin many years he had been associated with Freemasonry , he had never met a brother who had discharged his duty equal to Bro . Hirradon . For a numoer of years he had been Hon . Treasurer of the Alpass Institution , and without his assistance it could never have reached such a position financially and in usefulness as it had attained that dav .
Bro . HARRADON , in reply , said he felt it an honour to occupy the position of Chairman for the year , and remarked that when he was appointed the Treasurer seven years ago there were 25 annuitants : at the present time there were 70 , ani between ^ 1100 and ^ 1200 per annum was expended , while there were four more applicants under consideration . Since the formation of the Institution , the brethren of the province had paid something like . £ 19 , 000 to the cause alone , to say nothing of what they subscribed towards the support of three other Binevolent Institutions of Freemasonry .
Bro . T . HENSIIAW then announced that the donations amounted to £ 1406 14 s ., which had been surpassed only once since the foundation , and was . £ 200 better than last year .
