I . Improvidence is one of the chief evils of this country , and Freemasons would be doing good service to their cause , as well as to the country , if they would endeavour to inculcate a spirit of prudence and providence amongst their brethren , and amongst those who in due time will seek to be admitted into our Order .

2 . Thrift and its opposite—improvidence—are to a very great extent matters of habit , and—like other habits" Grow with our growth , and strengthen with our strength . " It is therefore most desirable that parents , guardians ,

instructors , and others possessing influence and authority over the young , should exercise their influence and authority in this direction , and thus prevent the constant increase of the huge army of spendthrifts and wasters , preventing also an altogether incalculable amount of misery and poverty , and being the means of

securing happiness and independence to multitudes who will otherwise miss it , as so many of their predecessors have missed it , by not knowing the importance of living within their means and setting aside something for the unforeseen and unexpected , for the days of ill-health and accident , misfortune , old age , and

death . 3 . Freemasons , as a body and as individuals , should specially practice economy and prudence , and they will thus be the better able to carry out those grand principles of brotherl y love and relief which they profess so heartily to believe in .

4 . Our " peculiar system of morality " should certainly include selfhelp , forethought , foresight , thrift , and . temperance , and we who declare ourselves to be free men , of mature age and sound judgment , should set a noble example in such matters as being " free " from the burden of debt , providing for the welfare of those

belonging to us , and making suitable provision for the future . Various other points might with advantage be alluded to in connection with this important subject , but I forbear encroaching further upon your valuable space . —Yours fraternally ,

In the Freemason for July 4 th , 1891 ( Notes and Queries No . 945 ) , I referred to Le Clerc ' s Treatise on Architecture , but quite overlooked the fact that Bro . the Rev . H . W . Rugg , D . D ., Editor of the Freemasons ' Repository , Providence , Rhode Island , was the first to draw my attention to that rare and valuable work . An

excellent reproduction of the arms and dedication to the Master and Wardens of the Worshipful Company of Masons is given as the frontispiece to Dr . Rugg ' s excellent magazine for July , 1888 , and an interesting article is inserted at page 539 of that number , finishing with the apt declaration— " Certainl y this dedication by

the Engraver , Mr . John Sturt , is not without its Masonic significance . " My friend , Bro . T . H . Emmons , tells me he has found another edition in M . W . Bro . General Lawrence ' s noble Masonic library , viz ., A . D . 1732 . It is in two volumes , just as the issue

of 1723-4 , and precisely the same as to plates and text , save that the title is corrected respecting the CLXXXI . plates , instead of 200 , in the first English edition . The second edition seems to be rarer than the first of the previous decade .

I am not aware of any particulars of the Masonic career of the Earl of Sutherland , his lordship ' s title being quite unknown to me . Possibly the reference is to Lord Southwell , 2 nd Baron , who was

Grand Master of Ireland in 1743 , but unfortunately there are no facts on hand to enable me to form an exact opinion on the subject . Possibly Dr .
