A . Davison , 890 ; and J . 1 * . Woodward , Prov . Grand S . E . Middlesex . Bro . William Walter Lee , 1 S 97 , was exalted , after which Comp . W . H . Lee installed Comp . L . Levey as M . E . Z . ; and Comp . F . Broivn , P . Z , 53 S , installed Comp . J . L . Payne as H . ; Comp . Funston , P . Z ., was installed as J . The other companions invested as officers were Comps ,
Neville Green , S . E . ; Thos . Clark , S . N . ; Wm . Simpson , P . S . ; Adam J . Berry , 1 st A . S . ; John Henry Loit , 2 nd A . S . j William Henry Lee , P . Z ., Treas . ; and J . J . Marsh , Janitor . After the banquet which followed , the usual Royal Arch toasts were honoured . Comp . A . Clark , I . P . Z ., in proposing "The Health of the M . E . Z ., " said the companions knew Comp . Levey was a good Arch Mason , was a hard worker , and tsok a great deal of interest in the affairs of
this chapter , and there was no question that he would make an excellent First Principal for the ensuing year . He hoped he would have more work in the chapter than he ( Comp . Clark ) had had ; in fact , he had had so little to do that he thought he was scarcely able to do his work . Comp . Levey , however , had made such arrangements that he would be able to have a candidate for exaltation every time
the chapter met during his year . He hoped this was true , but he had no doubt it would be a most successful year for Comp . Levey , and he hoped every companion would support him heartily . The M . E . Z ., in reply , said he felt on this occasion that he had undertaken a duty which rather exceeded his powers , and he hoped that the next time he had to discharge a similar one he might be better prepared than he
was then . He was not a speaker ; perhaps it was just as well that he was not . He had this to say . He had to thank the companions for the confidence they had shown in selecting him as the head of this chapter , and to assure them it should not be for the want of any effort on his part that he should fail to give them satisfaction . They were justly entitled to have a good worker , and he would
do his best , and if he did not succeed as svell as he could wish he would ask them to forgive him . He hoped when his term of office expired they would say he had won their confidence , and that he had not betrayed it , but had performed his duties as he should do . In giving "The Health of the H . and J . " the M . E . Z . said he knew from past experience what Comps . Payne and
Funston could do , and he was almost afraid to think he had to work with such skilled Masons . He knew , however , that his own efforts would be well seconded , and he sincerely desired that both the other Principals would have health and strength to support him in his endeavours to have a successful year . Comp . Payne , in reply , said he had always taken great
pleasure in Royal Arch working ever since he was exalted , and he had been ably assisted by Comp . Brown . Everything he knew in Royal Arch Masonry he had to thank Comp . Brown for , and he did so . And at the same time he could inform the companions that if they wanted advice or instruction they could not do better than go to the Chapter of Improvement over which Comp . Brown
presided . Comp . Funston reiterated the observations of Comp . Payne , and added the hope that at the end of his year the companions would say he had done his duty . The M . E . Z ., in proposing the toast of "The Newlyexalted Companion , " said he hoped Comp . Lee would follow in thc footsteps of his worthy father , and add another to those shining lights in Royal Arch Masonry who had
been of such service in promoting the best interests of the science . Comp . W , W . Lee , responding , said he hoped his future conduct would show the companions that their confidence in receiving him among them had not been misplaced , and that on the foundation laid that evening would be raised a superstructure perfect in its parts and honourable to the
Duke of Connaught Chapter . " The Visitors" was the next toast , which gave the M . E . Z . the opportunity of acknowledging the great services to Royal Arch Masonry performed by Comp . F . Brown , He went into Comp . Brown's chapter of improvement not knowing one word beyond bare signs and marks of the Ropal Arch , but by Comp . Brown ' s care and
industry he had acquired a knowledge of the ceremonies which hc was now able to work . Comps . Woodward , Brown , and others responded . The M . E . Z ., in giving the toast of " The I . P . Z ., " presented Comp . A . Clark with a handsome P . Z . 's jewel . Comp . Clark acknowledged the toast , hoping , at the same time , that the companions would forgive his
shortcomings . He had attended Comp . Brown ' s Metropolitan Chapter of Improvement on several occasions , and listened with interest to the working . He wished he had had more work to do during his year of office , because perhaps he should then have done the work better . But he had tried
to do his best . No doubt Comp . Lee would say it was the duty of the M . E . Z . to introduce as many candidates as possible ; but he had been unable to introduce any , although he did his best . He wished to thank Comp . Lee for peiforming the installation ceremony , which was so admirably rendered . He admitted that he had not done the whole of his duty as M . E . Z ., because he did not do the installa-
Royal Arch.
tion . Comp . Lee had told him it was the rule to do so . He hoped Comp . Levey would set a good example in this respect , and that all future Principals would install their successors . Hc concluded by thanking the companions for the I . P . Z . jewel . The other toasts were "The P . Z . 's , " to which Comp . Lee , P . Z ., Treasurer , responded ; " The Officers , " responded to by the P . S . ; and the Janitor , after which the companions separated .
