The new building occupies an elevated position in the picturesque and historic grounds cf the Lodge Demesne , which is part of the ancient grant of James I . to one of 75 English families who were settled during his reign in this district .

'Ihe presentation took the form of a handsome dressing-case , richly mounted , and containing the following inscription : " Presented to

" Accompanying the dressing-case was a testimonial describing it " as a small token of esteem for the interest you took in the lodge , and as an appreciation of your sterling worth . Arthur Collins to specially remodel the whole floor of the auditorium , a broad centre

This arrangement will , by-the-by , present the old theatre in the way it was oiiginally intended to be used when rebuilt by the Duke of Bedford . THE HEALTH OF LONDON . —In London last week 2737 births and 1675 deaths were registered . Allowing for increase of population , the births were 38 below , and the deaths 65 above the average numbers in the corresponding weeks of the last 10 years . The annual death rate per iooofrom all causes , which had been 2 i"o , 20 ' 6 , ig' 6 in the preceding three weeks , further fell last week to 19 . 0 . During the four weeks ending on Saturday last the death rate averaged 20 ' 1 per 1000 , being I ' O per 1000 above the mean rate in the corresponding periods of the ten years 1890-99 .
THE ROYAL NATIONAL LIFEBOAT INSTITUTION . —Bro . the Lord Mayor is making a special appeal on behalf of the City of London Branch Committee of the Royal Lifeboat Institution . The institution , his lordship points out , maintains 295 lifeboats at an annual cost of over £ 80 , 000 , the whole of which sum has to be raised from voluntary contributions . Rewards have been granted for saving 41 , 842 lives since 1824 . I . E ., M . P ., on behalf of the Association of Friendly , 'Trade , and Philanthropic Societies . A meeting wis therefore arranged of delegates for various friendly , trade , and philanthropic societies , under the patronage of the Archbishop of Canterbury , the Bishop of London , Bro . Archdeacon Sinclair , and other gentlemen . An executive committee was appointed to obtain the illuminated address , and Mr . R . N . He had freed the Morley Home from debt by a donation of some £ 7000 , thereby enabling the committee of that home to open 50 additional beds for the benefit of the working classes . In conclusion , the speaker addressed Lady Bevan , and wished her husband a speedy
restoration to robust health . Bro . the Lord Mayor next spoke in eulogistic terms of Bro . iir Alfred Bbvan , saying how greatly he had taxed his health in the many efforts he had made to assist charity . Bro . Alderman and Sheriff Sir William Treloar also said a few appreciative words concerning his colleague . This arrangement will , by-the-by , present the old theatre in the way it was oiiginally intended to be used when rebuilt by the Duke of Bedford . THE HEALTH OF LONDON . —In London last week 2737 births and 1675 deaths were registered . Allowing for increase of population , the births were 38 below , and the deaths 65 above the average numbers in the corresponding weeks of the last 10 years . The annual death rate per iooofrom all causes , which had been 2 i"o , 20 ' 6 , ig' 6 in the preceding three weeks , further fell last week to 19 . 0 . During the four weeks ending on Saturday last the death rate averaged 20 ' 1 per 1000 , being I ' O per 1000 above the mean rate in the corresponding periods of the ten years 1890-99 .
THE ROYAL NATIONAL LIFEBOAT INSTITUTION . —Bro . the Lord Mayor is making a special appeal on behalf of the City of London Branch Committee of the Royal Lifeboat Institution . The institution , his lordship points out , maintains 295 lifeboats at an annual cost of over £ 80 , 000 , the whole of which sum has to be raised from voluntary contributions . Rewards have been granted for saving 41 , 842 lives since 1824 . I . E ., M . P ., on behalf of the Association of Friendly , 'Trade , and Philanthropic Societies . Bro . the Lord Mayor occupied the chair , and there was a representative gathering ; among those present being the Lady Mayoress , Lady Bevan ( representing the Sheriff , who was absent through indisposition ) , Miss Ida Bevan , Bro . Alderman and Sheriff Sir William Treloar , Mr . Hamilton Hoare , Mr . J . A .
Dickenson ( one of the hon . secretaries ) , and many others . In making the presentation , Bro . Sir M . M . Bhownaggree gave a short history of the movement . He said that upon thc announcement that Bro . Sir Alfred Bevan had been nominated by the incoming Lord Mayor , as one of the Sheriffs it was felt by many working men that the event was one which should be celebrated by presenting him with some testimonial to fthoiv their gratitude for his large-hearted kindness to , and sympathy with , the working classes . Many Masons had also joined the movement to congratulate Bro . Sir Alfred
on his appointment a-i Grand Treasurer . A meeting wis therefore arranged of delegates for various friendly , trade , and philanthropic societies , under the patronage of the Archbishop of Canterbury , the Bishop of London , Bro . Archdeacon Sinclair , and other gentlemen . An executive committee was appointed to obtain the illuminated address , and Mr . R . N . Sir Alfred upon the honour conferred upon him by her Majesty . 'The societies represented included—The Morley House Convalescent Home , the Hospital Saturday Fund , the London Society of Compositors , the Hearts of Oak , various lodges of Foresters , Odd Fellows ,
and Shepherds , the Victoria and Albert Society , the Mutual Aid Society , and the Engineers . Bro . Sir Alfred Bevan had taken a personal interest in most of these philanthropic societies , and had helped them munificently and unostentatiously . He had freed the Morley Home from debt by a donation of some £ 7000 , thereby enabling the committee of that home to open 50 additional beds for the benefit of the working classes . In conclusion , the speaker addressed Lady Bevan , and wished her husband a speedy
restoration to robust health . Bro . the Lord Mayor next spoke in eulogistic terms of Bro . iir Alfred Bbvan , saying how greatly he had taxed his health in the many efforts he had made to assist charity . Bro . Alderman and Sheriff Sir William Treloar also said a few appreciative words concerning his colleague . Bro . the Lord Mayor tendered thanks on behalf of Lady Bevan , and a vote of thanks , proposed by Mr . Hamilton Hoare , and seconded by Mr . J . A . Dickenson , then brought the gathering to a close .
