The brethren then attended the usual banquet , which did great credit to Bro . Becker , the courteous host , at the Great Eastern Hotel , whose management of this line hostelry is greatly appreciated by the numerous visitors , as well as by the public of Harwich . The usual toasts were proposed and responded to , feeling mention being made of the Prince of Wales , Grand Master , and his recent happy escape from death at the hands of the Belgian assassin .

Bro . Emra Holmes , P . G . S . of W ., responded for " The Officers of the Grand Lodge , " and recommended Masonic students to consult Bro . Kenning ' s Cyclopaedia of Freemasonry , for much interesting information relative to the Mark Degree , and he thought they would be quite justified in inducing their brother Craft Masons to join their ranks and become Mark Masons .

The winding-up supper of the session of the members of the above lodge o ' instruction was held at the Great Eastern Hotel , Liverpool-street , on the 27 th ult . and was well attended . Bro . D . The President , Bro . D . CAMI ' HEI . L , P . M ., as a preface to the toasts , stated that his first duty was to apologise for the absence of the Preceptor , Bro . W . Finch , P . M ., who was to have taken the chair that night , but his wife ' s serious illness prevented him . He read a telegram from him sending hearty good wishes , and also telegrams from Bros . W . Blackburn , P . M ., Treasurer of the mother lodge ; and Paul Becker , to the same effect . , The toast of " TheOueen and the Craft" and "H . R . H . the Prince of Wales '

were duly honoured . In proposing " Thc Health of Bro . VV . D . Church , P . M ., " the President , Bro . D . CAMPUEI . L , stated that it was the toast of tho evening . Their esteemed brother had always been a zealous and hearty supporter of the Clapton Lodge . He was one of the oldest Past Masters , and his work of love as Secretary for many years not only in the mother lodge itself , but also in the lodge of instruction attached thereto , had greatly enhanced their prosperity and well-being . It was

not often realised what amount of care and prevision was entailed by the outtes of the ollice he had so ably occupied , nor the expenditure of valuable time , and careful and laborious occupation necessary for the fulfilment of his duties . He had been in every way a pattern lo the lod . ^ e , whether as a man , a Mason , or an indispensable and energetic officer , and the value of his indefatigable labours called for their grateful acknowledgment , and that was the reason why they asked Bro , Church to kindly accept a silver tea and coffee service , with a tray , as a feeble expression of what they felt towards him for his valuable services .

The tray bore the following inscription : " Presented by the members of the Clapton Lodge , No . 13 G 5 , and of the Clapton Lodge of Instruction , to W . D . Church , Esq ., as a memorial of high esteem , and in recognition of his valuable services as Secretary for many years . 27 th April , 1900 . " Bro . W . D . CiiUKcii , P . M ., on rising to respond , was received with acclamation . He said that words failed him entirely to thank them adequately for their

groat kindness to him , which he much appreciated . The splendid silver service he should for ever esteem , as would his wife , and he took it that the members felt towards him every good feeling . He hoped to be their Secretary for many years to come , and trusted that while he had health and strength to do his very best for the mother lodge and the lodge of instruction , and to always have the esteem of the members .

Bro . Church's speech was given with much emotion , but received with great applause . The PRESIDENT gave ' The Clapton Lodge , " the mother lodge , which he did in very eloquent terms , and he coupled with the toast the name of the W . M ., Bro . T . T . Gething . <

Bro . GETHING , who had a hearty reception , responded , and after thanking the officers and brethren for making the lodge so great a success , said that he hoped their good efforts would continue , and that the lodge ' s success would be greater and greater , and that all the brethren would follow bjth inside and outside the lodge the beautiful tenets of Freemasonry .

The PRESIDENT submitted the toast of " The Clapton Lodge of Instruction , " and said it had an efficient Preceptor in Bro . W . Finch , P . M . It had for its aim the benefit of Freemasonry , and he had no hesitation in stating that it had been of great value to the mother lodge and other lodges , and had turned out some excellent workers of the ritual , and he had much pleasure in associating the name of Bro . F . C . Lintott , P . M . , with the toast .

In response , Bro . Lintott stated that he appreciated his name being coupled with the toast , but he was sorry that their Precptor , Bro . W . Finch , was not able to be there to respond . They were all indebted to the President for the able manner in which he had made the presentation to Bro . W . D . Church on behalf of the 52 subscribers . The PRESIDENT proposed "The Visitors , " to whom he gave a very hearty welcome , making special mention of Bros . E . Brookes , Stanger , and R . T . West .

Bro . BROOKES responded , and said that he was pleased to be present that evening and to be associated with the well-deserved testimonial to Bro . W . D . Church , P . M . He felt he was not a stranger there as he had seen many of them initiated in the Clapton Lodge and several installed into the chair . The mother lodge was known for its excellent working and it was a lodge that they should be proud of . Bro . STANGER also acknowledged the toast in a very eloquent speech , and Bro . R . T . WEST also responded .

In proposing The Health of the President , Bro . W . D . CHURCH , P . M ., stated that Bro . Campbell , P . M ., had endeared himself to every member of the Clapton Lodge and they had never had a better W . M . or President , and his kind words in making the presentation to him ( Bro . Church ) would never be effaced from his memory . ( Applause . )

Bro . D . CAMPBELL , P . M ., on rising to respond was received with enthusiasm . He said that not only had the season of lodges of instruction come to an end , but that night had also come to an end . He heartily appreciated the very kind words of Bro . Church in proposing the toast and the way the members had endorsed them .

Auld Lang Syne brought a very pleasant and memorable evening to a close . Bros . A . It . Church , P . M . S . A . Stanger , H . H . Bowen , F . Orfeur , J . W . Martindale , W . Shipman , and Mr . BRO . D . CAMPBELL , P . M ., 1365 . It is with deep regret we announce the sudden death of Bro . D . Campbell on Saturday afternoon , the 28 th ult . Our brother was initiated in the Clapton Lodge No . 1365 , 00 the 19 th May , 1 S 87 , and was installed W . M . on the 21 st Sept . ' 1893 . He was exalted to Royal Arch Masonry in the Islington Chapter , No . 1471 , in which he was M . E . Z . for two years in succession . He was one of the

best of fellows , a true friend , a splendid and earnest Mason , and most genial . He was known to us personally lor many years , and we tender our respectful sympathy to his bereaved widow and family , and to the members of his lodges who have sustained a great loss . His last Masonic function was to preside at the supper of the Clapton Lodge of Instruction—a report of which appears in another column—on the evening previous to his death , and no one who was

present on that occasion would have thought that his end was so near . The funeral took place on the 2 nd instant at Tottenham Cemetery , and at the grave were Bros . T . T . Gething , W . M . ; W . Blackburn , P . M ., Treas . ; W . D . Church P . M ., Sec ; R . I ! . Chessum , K . Stanger , T . W . Vaughan , and E . - BRO . SIR GABRIEL GOLDNEY , BART . It is with sincere regret we announce the death , on Tuesday , the Sth instant of Bro . Sir Gabriel Goldney , Bart ., who was for many years a prominent member of the Craft in the Province of Wiltshire and who , in addition , held many important positions in the county , among them being that of one of its representatives in Parliament . The deceased , who was S 7 years of age , was the senior Past Master of the Landsdowne Lodge of Unity , No . 626 , Chippenham , was appointed

Dep . P . G . Master of Wilts in 18 73 , under the late Lord Muthuen , and retained the appointment till ICS 93 under the present Prov . Grand Master ( the Earl of Radnor ) . In 188 7 , he was appointed a Past Grand Warden in recognition of his services to Freemasonry and in commemoration of her Majesty ' s Jubilee . He was created a Baronet in 1880 , and is succeeded in the title by his son , Bro . Gabriel Prior—now Sir Gabriel Prior—Goldney , who was born in 1843 , has been City Remembrancer since 18 S 2 , and was appointed Senior Grand Deacon of England in 18 SS and Asst , Grand Sojourner of Supreme Grand Chapter in 1894 ,
