His year of office having just come to a close , and his successor in the chair , Bro . Henry V . Clements , having been elected at the last meeting , the brethren were looking forward . to Bro . BRO . HARRY TOWNEND , W . M . 2351 . Bro . Harry Townend , W . M . 2551 , was born on the 9 th December , 1847 , and in i 866 ' entered the business of Thomas Townend and Co ., the well-known hat manufacturers , of Lime-street , E . G ., of which his father was the senior partner . After his father ' s death , he left the firm in 1882 and started a shipping
commission business , which he carried on until 1890 , when he received an offer from the Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York to open a branch for them in Cripplegate and to act as manager , which has been a great success , and is one of the best branches the City has . Bro . Townend is churchwarden of Christ ' s Church , Highbury , and on his silver wedding in December last he was presented with a very handsome silver tea service and standard lamp by the congregation .
He was also presented by his colleagues in London with a very large silver teatray , and by the staff at the Cripplegate branch with a case of knives and forks . Our brother was initiated on the 21 st April , 18 93 , in the Mozart Lodge , No . 1929 ; is a founder of the Clissold Lodge , No . 2551 , which was consecrated on the 29 th March , 18 95 , and in which he was installed W . M . on the Sth April , 1897 . He
was elected a joining member of the Barnato Lodge , No . 2265 , on the 20 th January , 1896 , and was installed as W . M . of that lodge on the 18 th January last . His progress in Masonry , for which he is to be commended and congratulated , has been singularly rapid , which is not very surprising , as we have no doubt it can be attributed to his enthusiasm in the Craft and for his excellent working of the ritual .
