" As to carrying out the duties of his position , he could only say that while he certainly did not pretend to have the abilities of his esteemed predecessor or of those excellent Masters with whom the history of the lodge for its good working was identified , jet they might depend upon it that if hard work , a thorough desire to succeed , a constant attendance , and the use of every ability he possessed could accomplish his desire , and win for him their approbation at the end of his year of office , those forces
would be used by him to the desired end . He thanked them from the bottom of his heart for their great kindness in placing him in the chair as the W . M ., and for their generous and enthusiastic reception of the toast of his name . He then resumed his chair amid loud cheering . Bro . anything he had done to add to the happiness and harmony of the members . The W . M . gave "The VV . M . Elect , Bro . A . H . Cooper , " remarking that ' , it mast be a great pleasure to him to have been unanimously elected W . M . In response , Bro . A . H . ln proposing " The Initiates , " the W . M . observed that initiates were the life blood of lodges . The two he had the honour of initiating that night appeared to be of the right sort , and they had both informed him they were very much impressed with the ceremony of their initiation , and he hoped to live to see them installed in thit their mother lodge . Bro . S . N . Wolffers responded , and said that it was with deep gratitude thit hc returned thanks to the VV . M . for the very kind way he had proposed the toast , and the brethren for the hearty way they had received it . It was a greit honour to be initiated
in such a grand Order , and the words uttered by the VV . M . in the beautiful cerem my were very solemn , and had created such an impression on him thit he could not adequately express what he felt . He added that it would always be his duty to enhance the great principles of Masonry . He took thit opportunity of tendering his d * epe > t thanks to his sponsors , Bros . Lamigeon and Emery , and he should never forget th : ir kindness in introducing him into Freemasonry , and concluding an able speech , he stated that it would ever be his endeavour to make himself a useful member ol the lodge and the Craft .
Bro . II . VV . Butcher also acknowledged the toist , and said thit the eloquent speech of his co-initiate , Bro . Wolffers , left him nothin ? to add , except to think them from his heart for the great honour they had paid him in admitting him to their fold . The W . M . proposed "The Visitors , " whom he cordially welcomed . VVhat was wanting in quantity was made up in quality . He read out a list of the guests , giving a kind word to each , and remarked that time would not permit for all of them to respon 11 . and he associated with the toast the names of Bros . L . S . W ., was unanimously elected Worshipful Master ; Bro . W . M . Stiles , P . G . Treas . —the first W . M . of the
lodge—was re-elected Treasurer , and Bro . T . C . Edmonds , P . M ., again appointed Tyler , and the Audit Committee was selected . Bro . A . H . M ., and carried unanimously . In an earnest but brief speech the VV . M . acknowledged the vote . The Secretary stated thit the W . M . would represent the lodge as Steward at the forthcoming Centenary Festival of the Royal Misonic Institution for Boys , and he hoped by the next meeting of the lodge thc members would make his list a large one in amount , which would redound to the credit of the lodge .
'The lodge was then closed , and the brethren adjourned to a superb banquet , which was well served under the personal superintendence of Bro . P . Becker . 'The usual loyal and Masonic toasts having been duly honoured , Bro . VV . M . Stiles , P . G . Treas ., whose name was associated with the toast of " The Grand Officers , Present and Past , " said that he was proud to have the privilege of responding . They all deplored the great calamity that befel Lord Lathom by the sad loss of his wife , a most estimable lady , and he was glad to hear that he wis improving in health , and was expected back shortly in Masonic circles . He was sorry
that Bro . Letchworth , the Grand Sec . —who consecrated the lodge—wis not present that evening , as he was always welcome there . Bro . J . J . Lamigeon , I . P . M ., proposed the toast of "The W . M ., Bro . Hirry Townend , and said that he had no doubt it would be heartily received , as it deserved to be . He was a good Master , one of the best of workers of the ritual , and a true friend . His work that evening was perfect , and did him great credit . That was the last occasion on which the VV . M . would preside , and might he have long life and every happiness to do in the future as he had done in the pist—his very utmost to pronote the interests of the Clissold Lodge !
The toast was enthusiastically received , as was the W . M ., Bro . Harry Townsend , on rising to respond . Bro . Townend thanked the brethren for the hearty manner in which they had received the toast . He had enjoyed his year of office very much , and in following those two eminent Masons—Bros . VV . M . Stiles , P . G . Treas ., and J . J . Lamigeon , I . P . M . — who had gone before him , and if he had given satisfaction it wis an ample return for
anything he had done to add to the happiness and harmony of the members . The W . M . gave "The VV . M . Elect , Bro . A . H . Cooper , " remarking that ' , it mast be a great pleasure to him to have been unanimously elected W . M . In response , Bro . A . H . Cooper stated that he would endeavour to do his best to carry out the duties of his high office , and do honour to the chair , but he felt that in foil owing * his able predecessors he had a difficult task before him .
ln proposing " The Initiates , " the W . M . observed that initiates were the life blood of lodges .
L . S . Genese , LP . M . 22 G 5 ; I' - Fletcher Campbell , 22 G 5 ; W . Horslield , S . W . 114 ; and W . B . Trick , P . M . 13 M . . Bro .
