Bro . The W . AL was an old member of the lodge , and was well known

Lucas had worked together for a long time , during which period he had been alile to form a fair opinion of Bro . Lucas's competency for the chair . He was sure their new Alaster would perform his duties during the ensuing year to the satisfaction of them all . 'The W . M . having aptly replied , proposed " Thc Initiate , " who , he said , though poor in health that evening ,

he was certain by the attention he had paid to the ceremony would prove a valuable addition to the lodge . Bro . J . G . AL next gave" The Installing Master , " and in doing so , said , that it was with great diffidence hc proposed this toast , as he felt it was impossible for him to do justice to it . He had performed the installation ceremony in such an able manner , that had

Broadley , who , in the course of an eloquent reply , thanked the Worshipful Alaster for his kind welcome and hospitality , also for mentioning his name with the toast , an honour conferred upon him , doubtless , hailing , as he did , from so far . 'The great aims of Masonry were , as they all knew , to bring nations together . Bro . Broadley then

expressed the great pleasure it gave him in visiting the various lodges in London , which pleasure was considerably enhanced by the very hearty welcome accorded wherever he went . 'The speaker then made some interesting remarks anent Ancient Carthage , concluding by congratulating Bro . Rickwood on the able manner he had performed tlie installation ceremony , observing that in all his visits

to London lodges he had never seen it worked better . Bro . 'Thomas Beard , P . M ., also replied . " The Treasurer and Secretary " was the next toast proposed by the W . M ., who , in dtiing so , regretted that the ( irst named , Bro . Kenning , had had to leave . They all knew the valuable services and attention he . always paid to his duties . The Secretarial duties were also very arduous , but were always discharged

in a most able manner by their respected Bro . Abbott . Bro . Abbott , in reply , expressed his happiness at all times to perform his duties . He should continue in the future to discharg-e his duties in that exact manner , as he had always endeavoured to do in the past . Several other toasts were

The banquet took place at Freemasons Hall , in the Crown Room , seventy-two being present—over thirty of this number were ladies—who assembled in the drawingroom , whither the brethren adjourned , having formed in procession at thc closing of the lodge . Dewar , Holman , and Konig presenting themselves as candidates for raising , were examined according to ancient customs , and gave abundant proof of the further progress they had made in tlje science , receiving their duo reward from the W . M . Bro . Holman was then admitted and duly obligated as a

Worshipful Master , the same privilege being conferred on Bros . Dewar and Konig , the three candidates undergoing the remainder of the ceremony in company . Bro . Wellard worked the Degree in a most impressive manner , and was ably assisted by his officers and Past Masters , so that the candidates were enabled to follow and appreciate all the beauties of this splendid ceremony . Having listened attentively to the traditional

history and received the concluding congratulations of the Worshipful Master , the brethren took their seats for thc first time in a M . AI . ' s lodge . On the proposition of Bro Edward Swanborough , LP . AL , Bro . Bcveridge was elected an Auditor , and Bro . Harry Cox having proposed Bro . NEW CROSS LODGE ( No . 1559 ) . —The brethren of this lodge met for the second time , under the Mastership of Bro . Ernest li . Smith , on Saturday last , at their new quarters , the Ship Hotel , Greenwich , the occasion being an emergency meeting . Prior to the opening of lodge the banner of the W . AL was hoisted , a circumstance of 110 little importance , seeing that it is the first standard

presented to No . 1559 , which will now take its place among banner lodges . The brethren , one and all , expressed their admiration of the new decoration . The banner is of Masonic blue silk , with the family crest and motto of the W . M . in silver , viz ., an escalop shell and griffin ' s head , with the legend "Propositi Tenax" on a scroll . Thc escalop shell is particularly appropriate for a Alasonic banner , seeing that it is frequently to be met with

in heraldry , from the fact that it was the ensign of the Pilgrims in their expeditions to the Hol y Land . Heavy blue and white fringe borders the banner , which is further adorned with cords and tassels in the same colours . _ We trust that for generations to come the standard of Bro . Smith may retain its place in the New Cross Lodge . When proceedings opened the following brethren were present , viz ., Bros . Ernest E . Smith , W . M .:

W . Cowley , S . W . ; T . Grummant , J . W . ; E . H . Thiellay , P . M ., P . Z ., P . G . S . B . Middx ., Treasurer ( acting as I . P . M . ); Walter Simmons , P . M ., Secretary ; Hiram Henton , S . D . ; J . Ross , acting as J . D . ; E . Fry , I . G . j C Knibbs , R . R . Gloag , H . Hayes , G . Bertini , J . Meyer , Rev . James Sturdee , Archibald Thistleton , 1599 ; Horace White , 1257 , and others . The lodge having been duly opened , Bro . the Rev . Tames

Sturdee was presented for examination as a candidate for the Second Degree , and subsequently passed . Ballot was then taken for Messrs . Henry Hayes , J . H . Meyer , and Giovanni Pietro Bertini , all of whom were proposed by the W . M . and seconded by the Secretary . The election was unanimous in each instance . Mr . Hayes was then admitted , and impressively initiated into the mysteries and privileges of ancient Freemasonry ;

then Messrs . Meyer and Bertini were admitted in company , and were received into the Craft , the candidates being evidently impressed with the solemn ceremony . The W . M . then brought before thebrethren the case of a distressed brother , * whose petition to the Board of Benevolence was signed by those present . Some other business having- received the attention of the brethren , the lodge was closed in due form .

The brethren then adjourned to the banquet table , and due justice having been done to the good things provided by the manager of the Ship , Mr . Bale , the VV-M . gave the usual loyal and Masonic toasts , which were received with the great enthusiasm . Bro . Eugene Thiellay , P . AL , P . Z ., & c , Treasurer , gave " The Health of the W . M . " In the course of his _ remarks , " Bro . Thiellay said that the heart ' of the W . M . is in his work , evidence ofthe fact being

supplied by what Bro . Smith has already accomplished during the month he has occupied the chair of K . S . Four weeks ago they had seen him installed , and his labours for the twelve months commenced instantl y , for he then and there initiated a brother into Freemasonry , a performance he had supplemented that evening by a passing , and two initiation ceremonies . Of his ability to discharge the duties of his important office he need not speak , since those present had

for themselves heard him at work in lodge . He ( Bro . Thiellay ) only trusted that the remainder ot Bro . Smith ' s year of oflice would be as brilliant as thc first month . The toast was honoured with smart fire . Bro . Ernest Smith , in reply , thanked the brethren for the hearty manner in which they had received this toast . It was a matter of great satisfaction to him that there had been no lack of work to do that evening , and he should be disappointed if

at any future meeting of the lodge there should by no occasion for working a ceremony . He had prepared himself for a year of pleasurable labour , and was convinced that with the assistance of his two Wardens—than whom more energetic oflicers had not filled their respective chairs—the lodge would have nothing but clear sailing while he ruled over them . One of his first endeavours would be to place the Benevolent Fund of the lodge on a sound footing

( cheers ) so that No . 1559 should not be behind other lodges in supporting the great Masonic Charities . While on his feet hc would take occasion to propose " The Healths of the three Initiates , " who were , individually and collectively , an acquisition to the lodge . " Bro . Hayes assured the brethren that he had been greatly impressed by the ceremony his friend , and brother , the W . M . had so ably performed . His anticipations had been more than realised

in this respect , and he was exceedingly sensible of the honour that had been done him that evening by admitting him to the Craft . Bro . Meyer stated that it had long been the dearest wish of his heart to become a Freemason , but for some time he was quite at a loss to discover the medium of doing so . Fortunately he made Bro . Smith acquainted with the fact , with the happy result of being initiated by Bro . Smith himself . Bro . Bertini informed thebrethren that

during a stay in America he was on the point of joining a lodge of Freemasons , but he did not regret the fact that his initiation into the Order had been delayed until he met their W . M . in England . He was proud indeed to be numbered among them , and his earnest desire was to acquire Masonic knowledge . Bro . Thiellay , P . M ., & c ., Treasurer , then drew the attention of the brethren to the handsome decoration which the W . M . had presented to the

lodge , and asked them to accord Bro . Smith a cordial vote of thanks . The banner had evoked general admiration , and afforded additional evidence of the interest their Worshipful Master took in the lodge . Bro . Ernest Smith said a few words in reply , and gave the toast of " The Visitors . " Bro . 'Thistleton , 1599 , in returning thanks , assured the brethren that he had never enjoyed himself out of his mother lodge so much as he had at the installation of his friend ,

Bro . Smith , on that evening . The W . M . had been kind enough to express a hope that he ( Bro . Thistleton ) would be a constant visitor . In repl y to this he could only say that if such was likely to be the case he should have to become a joining member . Bro . White , 1257 , said it gave him a great amount of pleasure in visiting lodges , for he thus had an opportunity of contrasting the different

workings . What he had heard in the lodge room that evening , when an old friend of his had been so admirably initiated into Freemasonry , convinced him that the New Cross Lodge would hold its own with any for the proficiency of its officers . Harmony followed , the initiates principally distinguishing themselves . Bros . Thiellay , P . M ., and Cowley , S . W ., also added materially to the enjoyment of the evening .

DUKE OF CORNWALL LODGE ( No . 1839 ) . — 'I his lodge met for the dispatch of business on the 24 th ult ., at Freemasons' Hall , W . C . There were present Bros . T . C . Corpe , W . M . ; J . W . Brooke , I . P . M . ; Dr . W . G . Bott , S . W . ; G . F . Smith , jun ., J . W . ; A . Stokes , S . D . ; Dr . J . C . Wilkins , J . D . ; J . W . Dewsnap , I . G . and

Several other toasts were

given ancl duly acknowledged . A capital selection of music , under the direction of Bro . A . J . Thompson , was given between the toasts , by Madame Adeline Paget , Aliss Grace Godolphin , Bros . James Kift , Thompson , and Chaplin Henry . The ballad , " No , sir , " sung by Aliss Godolphin and Bro . 1 . Thompson , being heartily encored .

AI . ' s lodge .

The lodge having been duly opened , Bro . the Rev . Tames

Sturdee was presented for examination as a candidate for the Second Degree , and subsequently passed . Ballot was then taken for Messrs . Henry Hayes , J . H . Meyer , and Giovanni Pietro Bertini , all of whom were proposed by the W . M . and seconded by the Secretary . The election was unanimous in each instance . Mr . Hayes was then admitted , and impressively initiated into the mysteries and privileges of ancient Freemasonry ;

then Messrs .
