MASONIC AND GENERAL TIDINGS

Bro . Lord and Lady Carringtnn have been staying during the past week at the Granville Hotel , St . Lawrence-on-Sea , Thanet . The Goldsmiths' Company have sent a donation of £ 25 to the general funds of the Dental Hospital of London . The Company have also voted a similar sum to the building fund .

_ His Royal Highness the Duke of York has been graciously pleased to become Patron of the Seaside Convalescent Hospital , Seaford , Sussex , the oldest institution of its class in England . The Duke of Norfolk , who is the owner of most of the property in the ancient town of Arundel , officiated at a pleasant ceremonial on Wednesday in connection with the opening of a new road and bridge constructed at his Grace's expense at the foot of the Castle . Various festivities followed in honour of the event .

To wish him bon voyage , Bro . Sir Augustus Harris , who left London on Saturday for a business trip to the States , was entertained on Friday by Bro . Major Probyn , L . C . C ., and a few intimate friends at the Constitutional Club . Those present included representatives of the theatrical and legal professions , and several City dignitaries .

. The Marquis of Londonderry , who was accompanied by Lady Aline Beaumont , Lady Helen Stewart , and Lord Castlereagh , on Thursday , opened a grand bazaar at Machynlleth Town Hall in aid of the restoration of Machynlleth Parish Church . In doing so he said the Church in Wales had always held its place , and did so still , among all classes and sects . EXCURSIONS TO SCOTLAND . —The Great Northern

Railway Company will run excursions from King's Cross Station to Edinboro' and Glasgow on August 17 th and 31 st and September 14 th , and to the North of Scotland on August 17 th and September 14 th . The excursions to Edinboro' and Glasgow will be for 11 days and those to the North of Scotland for five and n days . Tickets at a single fare for the double journey will be issued by these trains , in addition to the excursion tickets , available for return by one fixed train on any day within 16 days .

The annual meeting of the Provincial Grand Mark Lodge of Cornwall was held on Tuesday afternoor , the 31 st ult ., in the Falmouth Masonic Hall , Bro . Sir Charles B . Graves Sawle , Bart ., the Provincial Grand Master , presiding . He was supported by the Deputy Provincial Grand Master ( Bro . T . Chirgwin , J . P ., Mayor of ' . ruro ) . The usual business of the Provincial Grand Lodge was transacted , and at the conclusion a cold collation was partaken of , the customary toasts being submitted .

Since the Jura-Simplon Railway opened their agency in Shaftesbury-avenue , a large influx of tourist and holiday makers have availed themselves of the gratuitous information supplied by ^ the company , and are enjoying the bracing air of beautiful Switzerland . A tour will be mapped out to suit everybody ' s time and pocket , and intending visitors will

do well to call at the Jura-Simplon Office before making up their minds where to go . The panoramic splendours of the Swiss mountains and scenery are never more gorgeous than in August and September , and there is no country in the world where hotel keeping is better done and moderate prices asked .

The Duke of Connaught , accompanied by Colonel T . Kelly-Kenny , Major Crabbe , and Captain Lord Bingham , was present at the field-day in the Long Valley , Aldershot , on Thursday , in which the West London Brigade , under Col . H . Trotter , were encaged . This force was composed of the 1 st , 2 nd , and 3 rd Volunteer Battalions of the Royal Fusiliers , one squadron 6 th Dragoons , and a batterv of

Artillery . Their opponents consisted of the 3 rd and 17 th Middlesex Rifle Volunteer Corps , 2 nd V . B . Middlesex Regiment , and 1 st Highland Light Infantry , one squadron 6 th Dragoons , and a battery of Artillery . To-day ( Friday ) his Royal Highness will act as chief umpire at extensive operations in the vicinity of the Fox Hills , in which the whole of the regular and volunteer forces at Aldershot will be engaged .

Not by any means the least interesting of the many attractive entertainments at the Earl ' s Court Exhibition on Bank Holiday were the instructive lectures delivered by Bro . lames Stevens , representative of the Australian Irrigation Colonies . These were illustrated by no less than 150 recently prepared dissolving views of the principal features of Australian cities and townships , with special reference to the Colonies of Victoria and South Australia , and the local

districts of the fruit farming settlements . The morning lecture bore the title of " Under the Southern Cross , " and was listened to by a large and appreciative audience . In the evening—under the title of " The Fruit Gardens of the World "—the lecturer illustrated the river Murray and its characteristics , the formation of the marvellous settlements of Mildura and Renmark , the methods of irrigation and results , the extensive fruit farms in full bearing , and the

large and important town of Mildura , which , within the short period of six years , now occupies a vast area hitherto a wilderness and waste . _ The interesting details of the work done , and the enterprising manner of its accomplishment , drew frequent and gratifying testimonies of approval from those whom the lecturer addressed , and to such as desire to

know more than they at present do of the capacity of the Australian Continent for development in the direction of fruit production , we strongl y recommend a visit to hear these lectures when opportunities may offer . For the next month or two they will be repeated at Earl ' s Court , and at the Crystal Palace , on alternate Thursdays .

The Grocers' Company have made a grant of 4100 to the Royal National Hospital for Consumption , Venlnor . THE SHRIEVALTY . —The badge and chain of office to be presented to Mr . Alderman Marcus Samuels , Sheriff elect , is being made at George Kenning's manufactory , Little Britain and Aldersgate-street , E . C .

LINCOLN ' S-INN GARDENS . —On and after Monday next until Friday , September 14 th , the Gardens of Lincoln ' s-Inn will be open every evening for the benefit of the poor children of the surrounding neighbourhoods from five o ' clock until dusk .

Messrs . J . R . Parkington and Co . state that the shipments of port for July were 726 7 pipes ( Great Britain , iSSS pipes ) , making 50 , 701 pipes for seven months , against 59 , 283 pipes in 1 S 93 . The sherry shipments were 2656 butts , making 27 , 721 butts for seven months , as compared with 30 , 630 butts for the corresponding period of last year . The convalescent home erected by Mr . J . Passmore

Edwards at Pegwell Bay , near Ramsgate , for the members of the Working Men's Club and Institute Union vras formally opened on Monday . Though the weather was showery there was a large attendance , including Mr . Edwards and the Mayor of Ramsgate ( Alderman Blackburn ) , who made appropriate speeches . ¦ In ¦ accordance with ancient custom , the First Commissioner of Works ( Mr . Herbert Gladstone ) has forwarded

warrants for bucks from Richmond Green Park to the Lord Mayor of London , the Sheriffs , the Recorder , the Chamberlain , the Town Clerk , the Common Serjeant , and the Remembrancer . The Civic Chief receives four , the Sheriffs each have three , and the others one each . These warrants had their origin in the early charters granted to the citizens of London , in which their " huntings " were secured to them . The first records of the custom date from 1101 .

The London Season may . now be said to be practically over , and " Society "is widely distributed to country seats and elsewhere . Amongst the departures we notice that of Lady Redhouse , daughter of the late Sir Patrick Colquhon , of Knight Templar fame , who has retired to her country

residence at Penshurst . Lord de L Isle has made Penshurst Castle a very charming place , and has attracted a great number of visitors of the surrounding gentry . At the Flower Show on , Monday last , we noticed Bro . Dr . Anthony Nutt , one of the numerous visitors entertained by Lady Redhouse .

MIDLAND RAILWAY . —A new departure in the issue of tourist tickets has been inaugurated by the Midland Railway Company , which will prove to be of great convenience to persons taking their holidays at this season . Excursion tickets are issued to tourists available to return any time

within sixteen days . Considerable difficulties have had to be surmounted in what appears to be a simple arrangement , but we hope that , although at present it applies only to Scotland , its success will be such as to enable the company to extend the privilege to other portions of their system .

Messrs . Raphael Tuck and Sons have made a christening gift to the infant Prince Edward of a cot coverlet of white satin surrounded with Honiton lace . In the centre is a Royal crown bordered with delicately-shaded silk , while on the left , worked in pale gold , appears the motto " Angels guard thee . " Encircling the crown are painted seven cherubs , scattering buds and petals of York roses . The

case in which the coverlet is contained is a fine specimen of the wood-carver ' s art . The gift is of English make throughout . By the Queen ' s command , after her Majesty had inspected the work , a photograph of the coverlet has been sent to Osborne . The Duchess of York in accepting it , desired that the expression of her thanks "for the very beautiful coverlet should be conveyed to the workers . "

MASONIC SERVICE . —The brethren of Preston attended Divine service in St . James ' s Church , on Sunday , the 22 nd ult ., upon the invitation of Bro . the Rsv . T . Barton Spencer , M . A ., vicar , P . G . C . England , W . M . 304 , in accordance with the custom that has marked the holding of office by him in the Order . The service was taken by Bro , the Rev . J . Pimblett , vicar of St . Matthew ' s , P . M . 113 ,

P . P . G . C ; Bro . the Rev . A . B . Beaven , M . A ., P . M . 314 ; Bro . the Rev . C . O . L . Riley , M . A ., vicar of St . Paul ' s , J . W . 314 ; Bro . the Rev . C . F . Wood , L . Th ., curate ot St . James ' s , Chap . 314 . Bro . the Rev . C . M . Clarke , M . A . > vicar of Christ Church , was unavoidably prevented from being present . There was a good congregation , and the musical part of the service was well rendered by the choir .

Mr . J . Stubbs , L . Mus ., A . R . C . O ., ably presided at the organ . The procession , headed by the band of the 1 st V . B . North Lancashire Regiment , was held under the banner of Unanimity Lodge , No . 113 , Bro . C . Blackhurst , the junior member present , acting as Standard Bearer . The

sermonwhich we regret we have not at present sufficient space for in our columns—was preached by Bro . the Rev . T . Barton Spencer , M . A ., vicar , P . M . 2229 , P . M . and W . M . 314 , P . P . G . C ., P . G . C . England , taking for his text Hebrews xiii ,, v . 1 . — " Let brotherly love continue . " The collection amounted to £ 15 14 s . gd .

HEREFORDSHIRE MASONIC CHARITY ASSOCIATION . — The seventh annual meeting of the members of this association was held at the Green Dragon Hotel , Hereford , on the 30 th ult ., when there were present : Bros . I " . G . Chance , W . M . of the Palladian Lodge ( President ); T . Smith , W . Margrett , and the Hon . Secretary , W . Earle . The report stated that since August , 1873 , when

this local association was established , the following sums had been remitted to the Masonic Institutions : To the Boys' School , £ 309 15 s . ; to the Girls' School , £ 267 15 s . ; to the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution—Mile Fund , £ 152 5 s . ; to the Female Fund . X 141 ] 5 S- ; total , ^ 871 10 s ., an average of more than £ 54 a year , which remittances had purchased 153 votes for life . The cash statement for

the year showed that the members' subscriptions amounted to i 39 iSs ., of which £ 32 was sent to the Institutions , and 10 guineas was carried forward as a balance . A ballot resulted in the following life subscriberships to the Masonic Institutions , viz ., Bros . W . T . Sate , G . H . Piper , W . j , Grant , J . H . Hall , W . H . The Leathersellers Company have voted donations of £ 31 10 s . to the Deptford Park Fund and £ 21 to King ' s College . The Duke and Duchess of Westminster , Prince Adolphus of Teck , Lady Margaret Grosvenor , Lord and Lady Arthur Grosvenor , Lord Belgrave , and Lady Lettice Grosvenor

were present on Wednesday at a . horticultural exhibition held at Eaton for the benefit of the cottage tenants on the estate . At the close of tbe day the Duke , speaking from the terrace , congratulated those present upon the success of the show , which was the first of the kind held on the estate .

The chief event at the Shoeburvness Artillery Volunteer meeting was the contest for the Queen ' s Prize , amounting , to h loo , and the Prince of Wales ' s Prize of £ 45 . The 6 th Detachment 4 th West York were declared the winner of the former , with a score of 4 S points ;•the 2 nd Detachment 2 nd Glamorgan taking the Prince of Wales ' s Prize , with a score of 36 points . The third aggregate was won by the 4 th Detachment City of London , and the fourth by the 10 th Detachment City of London .

CRICKET . —With his innings of six on Wednesday against Yorkshire , Albert Ward , the well-known Lancashire professional , completed his thousand runs in first-class cricket this season . He was the third to achieve this distinction , the othei two players being Brockwell and Abel , " and his aggregate now stands at 1004 . Only a day behind

Albert Ward , the veteran champion , Mr . W . G . Grace , yesterday ( Thursday ) at Clifton , by making 27 , completed his thousand runs in first-class matches this summer . At the end of last week he had made 950 , and against Sussex in the early part of the week he scored 33 and nine , so that his aggregate now stands at 1019 .

St . Briavel's Castle , situate about Sooft above the River Wye , between Tintern and Monmouth , is to be let , as is also Greystoke Castle , Cumberland , another of our ancient fortresses . St . Briavel ' s was formerly of much account ; its ruins show it to have been very strong and of large extent . Built in the reign of Henry I ., it has had among its owners Simon de Montfort and Warwick the " King

Maker . In 160 S the manor and castle belonged to the Crown . Afterwards , when the Duke of Beaufort was lord of the manor , he had a Court of Attachment , the castle serving as a prison for offenders in the forest and of debtors within the hundred . Though now modernised ; parts of the old building , in a good state of preservation , still testify to its antiquity .

NIAGARA IN WINTER . — the last days of "Niagarain Winter" are announced , and the Hall will be re-opened in October with an entire novelty for London . The proprietors of Niagara Hall have acquired the patent rights of an invention for the production of a natural transparent ice . They will greatly extend the premises , and convert the hall

into a real and natural ice skating rink , the area of which will greatly exceed that of any of the ice skating rinks which have proved so successful on the Continent . Not onl y is real ice produced for skating purposes , but there is a simultaneous manufacture of ice for table and general commercial purposes .

The Duke of Richmond presented new colours on Thursday at Glasgow to the 92 nd Gordon Highlanders . This famous regiment , one of the few distinctively Scottish that still wear the kilt , is now celebrating its centenary . It actually completed its hundredth year last June , but was then quartered in Dublin , and the festivities were postponed until their removal to Mary hill Barracks . There was a special appropriateness in the ceremony , inasmuch as the

battalion was raised by George , fifth and last Duke of Gordon in the male line . The 92 nd bore their flag to victory in the wars of the Peninsula , when it was specially thanked by Sir John Moore , and at Waterloo , where they successfully beat back column after column ot the enemy . Its latest distinction was to take part in the march to Kandahar , and General Lord Roberts , in bidding them farewell , Slid : "I can but hope that it may be my good fortune to

have such soldiers by my side when I next go into action . The 92 nd have made a name for themselves that will never be forgotten by me . " Arrangements for the visit of the German Emperor to Aldershot have been completed . His Majesty will arrive from Cowes at half-past nine on Monday morning , and , having been received by a guard of honour of the Northumberland Fusiliers , will proceed at once to Laffans

Plain , where a review of the troops , under the Duke of Connaught , will be held . A Royal salute by a battery of artillery will be fired from Pavilion Hill . The Brigade of Guards , under Major-General Lord Methuen , will arrive at Aldershot to-morrow ( Saturday ) in order to take part in the review on Monday and the field-day on the following day . The Royal Pavilion , which her Majesty occupied during her recent visit to the camp , has been prepared for

the Kaiser ' s reception . Some of the Queen ' s horses and carriages will be sent to Aldershot to-morrow ( Saturday ) for the use of his Majesty and suite . The Kaiser will lunch with the officers of the Rifle Brigade on Monday afternoon , and dine in the evening with the Duke of Connaught at Government House ; on Tuesday his Majesty will take luncheon with the officers of the Royal Artillery , and dine at the Scots Greys' Mess in the evening .

The various performers of the past season are now holiday-making either in this country or abroad . The brothers de Keszke are en route for Poland , Madame Melba is in Paris , and Madame Calve at a French holiday resort . Mr . Lloyd is at Brighton , but is going in a week or two for a short holiday at Oatend . Mr . Santley is at Stresa on the Lago Maggiore , Mesdamss Mordica and Brema are , of course , at Bayreuth . Mr . Plunket Greene ,

who has been to Bayreuth , is now at Carlsbad . Mr . Ben Davies is at present in London ; but when his wife is convalescent he will go to Westgate . Mr . Jean Gerardy is at Spa . S : nor Sarasate is at Pampeluna , but proceeds next week to San Sebastian . Miss Eibenschir . z is at Ischl . Miss Fillunger is in the Salzkammergut , Upper Austria , Mr . and Mrs . Henschel have taken a manse in Inverness shire for the autumn . Mdlle . ltavogli is in Italy . M *»

Watkin Mills is holiday-making in North Devon . Mr . Barton McGuckin is at Folkestone . Madame Marian McKenzie ( who has just been engaged for the Birmingham Festival ) | has taken a villa near Boulogne . Miss rtild * Wilson is at Northwood . Madame Amy Sherwin is at Hastings . Mr . Vert is in town ; but Mr . Daniel Meyer left on Thursday for his holiday in Scotland ; and Sir Arthur Sullivan is at his river-side residence , working at his music for the Lyceum .

To-day ( Friday ) his Royal Highness will act as chief umpire at extensive operations in the vicinity of the Fox Hills , in which the whole of the regular and volunteer forces at Aldershot will be engaged .

Not by any means the least interesting of the many attractive entertainments at the Earl ' s Court Exhibition on Bank Holiday were the instructive lectures delivered by Bro . lames Stevens , representative of the Australian Irrigation Colonies . These were illustrated by no less than 150 recently prepared dissolving views of the principal features of Australian cities and townships , with special reference to the Colonies of Victoria and South Australia , and the local

districts of the fruit farming settlements . The morning lecture bore the title of " Under the Southern Cross , " and was listened to by a large and appreciative audience . In the evening—under the title of " The Fruit Gardens of the World "—the lecturer illustrated the river Murray and its characteristics , the formation of the marvellous settlements of Mildura and Renmark , the methods of irrigation and results , the extensive fruit farms in full bearing , and the

large and important town of Mildura , which , within the short period of six years , now occupies a vast area hitherto a wilderness and waste . _ The interesting details of the work done , and the enterprising manner of its accomplishment , drew frequent and gratifying testimonies of approval from those whom the lecturer addressed , and to such as desire to

know more than they at present do of the capacity of the Australian Continent for development in the direction of fruit production , we strongl y recommend a visit to hear these lectures when opportunities may offer . For the next month or two they will be repeated at Earl ' s Court , and at the Crystal Palace , on alternate Thursdays .

LINCOLN ' S-INN GARDENS . —On and after Monday next until Friday , September 14 th , the Gardens of Lincoln ' s-Inn will be open every evening for the benefit of the poor children of the surrounding neighbourhoods from five o ' clock until dusk .

Messrs . J . R . Parkington and Co . state that the shipments of port for July were 726 7 pipes ( Great Britain , iSSS pipes ) , making 50 , 701 pipes for seven months , against 59 , 283 pipes in 1 S 93 . The sherry shipments were 2656 butts , making 27 , 721 butts for seven months , as compared with 30 , 630 butts for the corresponding period of last year . The convalescent home erected by Mr . J . Passmore

Edwards at Pegwell Bay , near Ramsgate , for the members of the Working Men's Club and Institute Union vras formally opened on Monday . Though the weather was showery there was a large attendance , including Mr . Edwards and the Mayor of Ramsgate ( Alderman Blackburn ) , who made appropriate speeches . ¦ In ¦ accordance with ancient custom , the First Commissioner of Works ( Mr . Herbert Gladstone ) has forwarded

warrants for bucks from Richmond Green Park to the Lord Mayor of London , the Sheriffs , the Recorder , the Chamberlain , the Town Clerk , the Common Serjeant , and the Remembrancer . The Civic Chief receives four , the Sheriffs each have three , and the others one each . These warrants had their origin in the early charters granted to the citizens of London , in which their " huntings " were secured to them . The first records of the custom date from 1101 .

The London Season may . now be said to be practically over , and " Society "is widely distributed to country seats and elsewhere . Amongst the departures we notice that of Lady Redhouse , daughter of the late Sir Patrick Colquhon , of Knight Templar fame , who has retired to her country

residence at Penshurst . Lord de L Isle has made Penshurst Castle a very charming place , and has attracted a great number of visitors of the surrounding gentry . At the Flower Show on , Monday last , we noticed Bro . Dr . Anthony Nutt , one of the numerous visitors entertained by Lady Redhouse .

MIDLAND RAILWAY . —A new departure in the issue of tourist tickets has been inaugurated by the Midland Railway Company , which will prove to be of great convenience to persons taking their holidays at this season . Excursion tickets are issued to tourists available to return any time

within sixteen days . Considerable difficulties have had to be surmounted in what appears to be a simple arrangement , but we hope that , although at present it applies only to Scotland , its success will be such as to enable the company to extend the privilege to other portions of their system .

Messrs . Raphael Tuck and Sons have made a christening gift to the infant Prince Edward of a cot coverlet of white satin surrounded with Honiton lace . In the centre is a Royal crown bordered with delicately-shaded silk , while on the left , worked in pale gold , appears the motto " Angels guard thee . " Encircling the crown are painted seven cherubs , scattering buds and petals of York roses . The

case in which the coverlet is contained is a fine specimen of the wood-carver ' s art . The gift is of English make throughout . By the Queen ' s command , after her Majesty had inspected the work , a photograph of the coverlet has been sent to Osborne . The Duchess of York in accepting it , desired that the expression of her thanks "for the very beautiful coverlet should be conveyed to the workers . "

HEREFORDSHIRE MASONIC CHARITY ASSOCIATION . — The seventh annual meeting of the members of this association was held at the Green Dragon Hotel , Hereford , on the 30 th ult ., when there were present : Bros . I " . G . Chance , W . M . of the Palladian Lodge ( President ); T . Smith , W . Margrett , and the Hon . Secretary , W . Earle . The report stated that since August , 1873 , when

this local association was established , the following sums had been remitted to the Masonic Institutions : To the Boys' School , £ 309 15 s . ; to the Girls' School , £ 267 15 s . ; to the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution—Mile Fund , £ 152 5 s . ; to the Female Fund . X 141 ] 5 S- ; total , ^ 871 10 s ., an average of more than £ 54 a year , which remittances had purchased 153 votes for life . The cash statement for

The Leathersellers Company have voted donations of £ 31 10 s . to the Deptford Park Fund and £ 21 to King ' s College . The Duke and Duchess of Westminster , Prince Adolphus of Teck , Lady Margaret Grosvenor , Lord and Lady Arthur Grosvenor , Lord Belgrave , and Lady Lettice Grosvenor

were present on Wednesday at a . horticultural exhibition held at Eaton for the benefit of the cottage tenants on the estate . At the close of tbe day the Duke , speaking from the terrace , congratulated those present upon the success of the show , which was the first of the kind held on the estate .

The chief event at the Shoeburvness Artillery Volunteer meeting was the contest for the Queen ' s Prize , amounting , to h loo , and the Prince of Wales ' s Prize of £ 45 . The 6 th Detachment 4 th West York were declared the winner of the former , with a score of 4 S points ;•the 2 nd Detachment 2 nd Glamorgan taking the Prince of Wales ' s Prize , with a score of 36 points . The third aggregate was won by the 4 th Detachment City of London , and the fourth by the 10 th Detachment City of London .

CRICKET . —With his innings of six on Wednesday against Yorkshire , Albert Ward , the well-known Lancashire professional , completed his thousand runs in first-class cricket this season . He was the third to achieve this distinction , the othei two players being Brockwell and Abel , " and his aggregate now stands at 1004 . Only a day behind

Albert Ward , the veteran champion , Mr . W . G . Grace , yesterday ( Thursday ) at Clifton , by making 27 , completed his thousand runs in first-class matches this summer . At the end of last week he had made 950 , and against Sussex in the early part of the week he scored 33 and nine , so that his aggregate now stands at 1019 .

St . Briavel's Castle , situate about Sooft above the River Wye , between Tintern and Monmouth , is to be let , as is also Greystoke Castle , Cumberland , another of our ancient fortresses . St . Briavel ' s was formerly of much account ; its ruins show it to have been very strong and of large extent . Built in the reign of Henry I ., it has had among its owners Simon de Montfort and Warwick the " King

Maker . In 160 S the manor and castle belonged to the Crown . Afterwards , when the Duke of Beaufort was lord of the manor , he had a Court of Attachment , the castle serving as a prison for offenders in the forest and of debtors within the hundred . Though now modernised ; parts of the old building , in a good state of preservation , still testify to its antiquity .

NIAGARA IN WINTER . — the last days of "Niagarain Winter" are announced , and the Hall will be re-opened in October with an entire novelty for London . The proprietors of Niagara Hall have acquired the patent rights of an invention for the production of a natural transparent ice . They will greatly extend the premises , and convert the hall

into a real and natural ice skating rink , the area of which will greatly exceed that of any of the ice skating rinks which have proved so successful on the Continent . Not onl y is real ice produced for skating purposes , but there is a simultaneous manufacture of ice for table and general commercial purposes .

The Duke of Richmond presented new colours on Thursday at Glasgow to the 92 nd Gordon Highlanders . This famous regiment , one of the few distinctively Scottish that still wear the kilt , is now celebrating its centenary . It actually completed its hundredth year last June , but was then quartered in Dublin , and the festivities were postponed until their removal to Mary hill Barracks . There was a special appropriateness in the ceremony , inasmuch as the

battalion was raised by George , fifth and last Duke of Gordon in the male line . The 92 nd bore their flag to victory in the wars of the Peninsula , when it was specially thanked by Sir John Moore , and at Waterloo , where they successfully beat back column after column ot the enemy . Its latest distinction was to take part in the march to Kandahar , and General Lord Roberts , in bidding them farewell , Slid : "I can but hope that it may be my good fortune to

have such soldiers by my side when I next go into action . The 92 nd have made a name for themselves that will never be forgotten by me . " Arrangements for the visit of the German Emperor to Aldershot have been completed . His Majesty will arrive from Cowes at half-past nine on Monday morning , and , having been received by a guard of honour of the Northumberland Fusiliers , will proceed at once to Laffans

Plain , where a review of the troops , under the Duke of Connaught , will be held . A Royal salute by a battery of artillery will be fired from Pavilion Hill . The Brigade of Guards , under Major-General Lord Methuen , will arrive at Aldershot to-morrow ( Saturday ) in order to take part in the review on Monday and the field-day on the following day . The Royal Pavilion , which her Majesty occupied during her recent visit to the camp , has been prepared for

the Kaiser ' s reception . Some of the Queen ' s horses and carriages will be sent to Aldershot to-morrow ( Saturday ) for the use of his Majesty and suite . The Kaiser will lunch with the officers of the Rifle Brigade on Monday afternoon , and dine in the evening with the Duke of Connaught at Government House ; on Tuesday his Majesty will take luncheon with the officers of the Royal Artillery , and dine at the Scots Greys' Mess in the evening .

The various performers of the past season are now holiday-making either in this country or abroad . The brothers de Keszke are en route for Poland , Madame Melba is in Paris , and Madame Calve at a French holiday resort . Mr . Lloyd is at Brighton , but is going in a week or two for a short holiday at Oatend . Mr . Santley is at Stresa on the Lago Maggiore , Mesdamss Mordica and Brema are , of course , at Bayreuth . Mr . Plunket Greene ,

who has been to Bayreuth , is now at Carlsbad . Mr . Ben Davies is at present in London ; but when his wife is convalescent he will go to Westgate . Mr . Jean Gerardy is at Spa . S : nor Sarasate is at Pampeluna , but proceeds next week to San Sebastian . Miss Eibenschir . z is at Ischl . Miss Fillunger is in the Salzkammergut , Upper Austria , Mr . and Mrs . Henschel have taken a manse in Inverness shire for the autumn . Mdlle . ltavogli is in Italy . M *»
