Reports Of Masonic Meetings.

there that night . He felt , however , that the toast would have received better treatment at the hands of Bro . Dr . qnurrell , but he supposed it was placed in his hands as a JJnp liment , for which he thanked them , and trusted that as time went on every brother in the lodge would be in a oosition to respond to the toast , to which he felt that no olnnuence of his could do due justice . Bro De Pinna then proposed the toast of "The W . M ., "

. and said that Bro . Robinson had that day , hefully believed , achieved the pinnacle of his Masonic ambition , namely , the chair of the lodge in which he was initiated . The Past Masters had set a splendid example , and set a high standard of excellence for those who had to follow them . He felt sure that Bro . Robinson would equal , if not excel , his oredecessors . The toast was one of so much importance

that if he failed to do it full justice they must excuse him , but he would ask them to receive it with a good hearty fire . Bro . Robinson , in response , said they were well aware that the greatest ambition a Mason could have was to reach the chair of the lodge in which he was initiated . He , initiated in that lodge , and had gone through its several offices below the chair , and although comparatively

a young Mason , yet was old enough to regret not having joined the Order years ago . Bro . De Pinna had spoken most kindly of him , and expressed his opinion that he ( Bro . Robinson ) would equal his predecessors ; well , if they had not done their work well , he could not have done his , and as he had to follow their excellent example , they might depend upon it he should endeavour to make himself

competent in his work and satisfactory to the brethren of the lodge . He deeply thanked them for the toast , and trusted that at the end of hisyear of office they would say that he had faithfully done his duty . Bro . Bateman , in response to a hearty reception of the toast of " The Installing Officer , " said he should not at that late hour of the evening take up their time in making

a lengthy speech , because , in the first place , they knew that when he got on his feet to speak they never knew when he was going to leave off ; and , in the next place , he felt he was not so young as he was a few years ago , and his memory was neither so good as then , while his inclination was sadly deficient of the energy of those younger times , when his propensity for talking was only equalled

by their impatience at the quantity of it . He , however , would say that he always looked upon Masonry as something that made them better men , and he felt sure that they one and all rejoiced at the opportunity they now had of meeting in comfort , and in perfect unity with one another , in their certainly commodious , if not handsomely appointed rooms . With reference to the toast , it had been his

privilege to install their W . M . that day . That was a red-letter day in the history of the Saye and Sele Lodge . Their W . M . was a good and true Mason , and they all wished him a prosperous year . They had comfortable rooms , and he felt sure that not only the members of the lodge but their visiting brethren would find in them everything necessary for their comfort and enjoyment . He paid a

high compliment to Bros . Wood and Elliott for the valuable assistance they had rendered in carrying out the work of the lodge , and concluded a brilliant address , of which the above is a mere outline , by heartily thanking them for the toast . The toast of "The Visitors" was coupled with the names of Bros . Lardner , Herbert , and Palmer ; and , after

the two first had thanked the W . M . and brethren for their hearty reception . Bio . Palmer , in the course of a speech brimful of interest , said it gave him peculiar pleasure to be present , because in past years Belvedere had been his place of abode , and he had then enjoyed the hearty co-operation of the W . M ., whose guest he was that night . He remembered his horses being

stabled in that building , now converted into a pretty and substantial Masonic Temple . Referring to the interval of time that had elapsed since he was at Belvedere , he said he had been a welcome guest at lodges in Calcutta and Bombay ; in the former he had been piiviledged to enjoy fraternal contact with enlightened Baboos , Musselmen , and Parsees . He instanced the

strength of the Masonic grip by narrating the circumstance of his having been told , in a Bengal lodge , by educated Hindoos , "Thatif the mystic tie could be extended amongst the various castes , the English Government need not fear wars or rebellion , but rather peace and goodwill would prevail if the Brotherhood of Masonic obligation could be spread through the vast Continent of the Indian Empire . "

Me heartily thanked them for the toast , and resumed his seat amid cheers . Bro . Elliott responded for "The Past Masters , " in a brief , yet effective speech ; and after " The Officers " had been responded to by Bro . Russell , the Tyler ' s toast concluded the proceedings , which were both memorable * nd harmonious .
