MASONIC AND GENERAL TIDINGS

The Provincial Grand Lodge of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight will be held at Ringwood on Tuesday next . Bro . Baron Henry De Worms , M . P ., arrived in London at the end of last week from Paris , after paying a round of visits to the various European capitals in

connection with the Sugar Bounties question . Bro . the Lord Mayor of London has opened a fund at the Mansion House for the relief of the sufferers by the late disastrous floods jn Poplar , especially in the Isle of Dogs district . It is estimated that a sum of ^ 5000 will be required for the purpose , and the Corporation have subscribed £ 105 .

The new storage reservoir at Ealing of the Grand Junction Waterworks Company was opened on Friday * the 3 rd inst ,, by Mr . Edwin Goodhugh Fox . It has a surface area of six acres , is 45 feet deep , and will contain 51 million gallons of filtered water . It is lined with Portland cement concrete , and the slopes are paved with vitrified bricks . The works have been carried out by Messrs . John Aird and Sons , of Belvedere-road , Lambeth ,

in the course of the last 20 months . Mr . Fox turned on the water with a silver key , and at the close of the simple ceremony the directors and shareholders present sat down to lunch , at which the usual loyal and sundry other toasts were given , Bro . Sir Roper Lethbridge , M . P ., replying for "The Houses of Parliament , " Baron Dimsdale , M . P ., and two others for " The Visitors , " and Bro . John Aird , M . P ., for "The Contractors . "

The Prince and Princess of Wales , with the Princess Louise of Wales and the Princess Beatrice , dined with the Queen at Osborne on the 2 nd instant , Bro . Colonel Lord Edward Pelham-Clinton being also one of the guests . Prince Adolphus of Teck will leave England next month by the troopship Crocodile for India to join his regiment , the 17 th ( Duke of Cambridge ' s Own ) Lancers , which is quartered at Lucknow .

H . R . H . the Duchess of Albany visited the People ' s Palace at Mile End on Saturday last for the purpose of opening an exhibition of paintings , and to inaugurate an " autumn f £ te , " which it is proposed to extend over a period of six weeks . The ladies of Port Elizabeth recently presented

the Prince and Princess of Wales with an album containing 104 photographic views of South Africa , and the work , which was originally published at Port Elizabeth , is now being issued here by Messrs . Stafford and Guy . Bros . Earl Amherst , Sir W . Hart-Dyke , M . P ., Sir W . Marriott , Q . C , M . P ., and others were present at a large political gathering in Eridge Park , Tunbridge Wells ,

on Monday . According to advices from Liverpool , Bro . Lord Claud Hamilton , M . P ., owing to impaired health , has placed his resignation of the seat for the West Derb y division of Liverpool in the hands of the Conservative party , and the Hon . H . W . Cross , eldest son of Viscount Cross , is announced as the Conservative candidate for the

vacancy . The number of contributors to the Women ' s J ubilee Offering to the Queen is returned as 3 , 162 , 256 , and the amount contributed as £ S 4 , n 6 net , of which ^ 70 , 000 has been placed in trust by the Queen ' s desire for the Nursing Fund , while the rest has been used for the statue of the Prince Consort , about to be erected in Windsor Park , and for a pearl and diamond necklace for her Majesty ' s own use .

The personal ornament presented to the Queen by the women of Great Britain and Ireland in honour of her Majesty ' s Jubilee is a necklace composed of the finest pearls and diamonds , the centre pearl and companion drop being of exceptional size and beauty . The necklace is composed of diamond trefoils with a pearl in the centre of

each , and the centre , forming a pendant or brooch at pleasure , is a quatrefoil of diamonds . The snap is in the form of a Royal crown , composed of diamonds , with two pearls forming , as it were , the cushion of the crown , and this snap can be attached to centre pendant or worn separatel y as a brooch , there being another pearl and diamond

snap of a similar kind which harmonises with the necklace , the several portions can be worn as separate ornaments ¦ or the hair , on velvet , or as brooches . The earrings consist of two button pearls of considerable size , surrounded ° l . diamond trefoils to match the necklace . The whole is "tted into a handsome case , with a solid gold plate on the outside

, bearing the following inscription : "To Victoria , yueen and Empress , a token of Love and Loyalty from ' . " ^ Daughters of her Empire , in remembrance of her Jubilee , June 21 st , 1 S 87 . The Prov . Grand Master of Middlesex , R . W . Bro . Sir Francis Burdett , has left Richmond for Foremark Hall , his seat in Derbyshire . Monday , the 6 th inst ., being the 44 th anniversary of the birth of H . R . H . the Duke of Edinburgh , the auspicious event was celebrated with the customary honours at Windsor .

The Royal Commission of Inquiry into the Sweating System , of which Bro . the Earl of Dunraven is the chairman , has been extended so as to include inquiry into the system throughout the whole of the United Kingdom . Bro . Sir E . Monson , her Majesty ' s Minister Plenipotentiary at the Court of Athens , has signed a

protocol—which has likewise been signed by the Greek Minister for Foreign Affairs—regulating the status of joint-stock companies in England and Greece . The Children ' s Jubilee Tribute to the Queen was recently closed at a meeting at 69 , Portland-square , at which Mrs . Goschen presided , and the sum collected amounting to upwards of £ 6000 has been presented to her Majesty

by the Princess Victoria of Teck , on behalf of the children , in a purse fastened by a diamond brooch intended as a personal ornament for the Queen . Her Majesty , through Mrs . Goschen , has sent her thanks to the Committee both for the tribute and the brooch , and the former will be devoted to the purpose of adding a wing to the Hospital for Sick Children in Great Ormond-street .

The Countess Granville and the Ladies Leveson-Gower have left town for Walmer Castle , but Bro . Earl Granville will remain in town till the close of the Parliamentary Session . The Elcho Challenge Shield , which was won this year at Wimbledon by the Irish Eight , was handed over for temporary custody to the Executive of the Irish Exhibition at Olympia on Saturday last . The trophy was

conveyed thither on a gun carriage , under an escort of the London Irish Rifles , commanded by Major Lloyd , and on arrival was conveyed to the West gallery and placed in a convenient receptacle , Major Lloyd explaining that he had been deputed to hand it over by Bro . the Duke of Abercorn , Captain of the Irish Eight . Bro . Lord Arthur Hill , M . P ., on behalf of the Executive , received it , and promised to hand it over to the Lord Mayor of Dublin at the close of the Exhibition .

Miss Alice Milbank , daughter of Bro . Sir Frederick Milbank , Bart ., was last week married to Mr . David Dale in the parish church of Well , near Bedale , Yorkshire . There was a numerous congregation , and the bride was given away by her father . It was decided at a largely-attended meeting of the inhabitants of Dover , held on Friday , the 3 rd instant ,

under the presidency of the Mayor , to build a promenade pier at Dover , and a Committee was appointed to take the needful preliminary steps . A MASONIC FUNERAL . —On the 1 st inst . the funeral ot Bro . Wm . P . Nolan , who died on Monday , the 30 th ult ., at Fisherwick House , Newcastle , County Down , took place . At 10 o ' clock the remains were removed from

the late residence of deceased , S , Conlon-street , Old Lodgeroad , to the Borough Cemetery , where they were interred . There was a large turnout of the Masonic Fraternity . The members of Donegore True Blues Lodge , No . 92 , and other brethren attended the funeral of the late Worshipful Master in large numbers , and the companions of R . A . Chapter No . 97 were also present . There was a long line of vehicles .

The District Grand Lodge met in Quarterly Communication at the Masonic Hall , Brisbane , on the 6 th June , Bro . the Hon . A . C . Gregory , Dis ' . G . M ., being in the chair . There was very little business to transact , but the Dist . G . Treasurer , having obtained the permission of the D . G . M ., took the opportunity of correcting an impression which appears to prevail among the members of

lodges , particularly in the country districts , to the effect that large sums are remitted to the Grand Lodge of England by Colonial lodges . As the D . G . Treasurer was careful to point out , the only fees remitted to United Grand Lodge are the 7 s . 6 d . fees for registration of initiates in the books of Grand Lodge , which entitle them to their Grand Lodge certificates , and the 2 S . 6 d . fees for

registration in the case of those who join lodges . He added that no annual fees whatever , either from lodges or brethren , are sent home , and yet Colonial brethren are entitled to participate in the benefits afforded by the Board of Benevolence and the Charitable Institutions of the Craftin England . H . Fulke Greville ( King's Own Royal Rifle Corps ) , brother of the Prov . Grand Master of Essex , with Mabel , only daughter of the late Mr . Ernald Smith , was solemnised at St . Paul ' s , Knightsbridge , on Wednesday , in the presence of a numerous congregation , which included the Earl and Countess of Warwick , the Countess of Rosslyn , and the

Lady Sybil St . Clair Erskine , Bro . Lord and Lady Brooke , Bro . Lord Alcester , Lady Algernon Gordon Lennox , Bro . General Sir F . Fitzwygram , and others . Among the wedding presents were gifts from the Prince and Princess of Wales , and the Princes Albert Victor and George of Wales , the Officers of the gth Lancers , the Officers of the 10 th Hussars , and the Officers of the King ' s Own Rifle Corps .

The 37 th annual general meeting of the Birkbeck Building Society will be held at the offices , Southampton Buildings , Chancery-lane , on Thursday , the 26 th instant , when the report for the past year will be presented , and three directors will be elected for the next three years . We note that this Annual Report is in all respects satisfactory , there being substantial increases in the several

balances due to the shareholders and the depositors , in the amount of assets , and in the year ' s profit . There has been a diminution in the amount of the advances owing to the depression in the value of house property generally , but there is an ample margin of security in all cases in which advances have been made . The only candidates for election

on the Board are the directors who retire by rotation . Bro . Major-General Goldsworthy presided at the annual general meeting , at St . James ' s Hall , on Wednesday , of the Cabdrivers' Benevolent Association . The report was of a satisfactory nature , and the President with the Vice-Presidents were re-elected for the ensuing year , with the addition to the latter of the worthy Chairman .

Northbrook Hotel , Lee , and now meets on Tuesday evenings , at eight . A new autumn edition of " Walks in E pping Forest" by Percy Lindley , describing portions less known to pedestrians , is in preparation . Professor Boulger has contributed some Notes upon the recent extensive treefelling and "forestry " operations in Epping Forest to the same issue .

The Duke of Westminster leaves Eaton Hall next week for Stack Lodge , where he will stay for a month . The Duke has sub-let several of the shootings which he leases from the Duke of Sutherland , and he now has only one-half of his former ground in his own hands . The Prince of Wales goes to Homburg next week , where he will stay till the end of this month . He

will then pay some visits on the Continent , and intends to return to England about September 29 th . The Prince will not return to England for the Doncaster Races . A most interesting disco very , especially to antiquarians , was made at the close of last week , in a chalk

pit on Portsdown Hill , near Paulsgrove and Porchester . The " find " consists of a skeleton and upwards of 20 bronze Roman coins in a wonderfully good state of preservation . The skeleton is that of a strong man , who was about 6 ft . in height , and who must have lived about 1700 years ago .

The Royal Commission of Inquiry into the Sweating System , of which Bro . the Earl of Dunraven is the chairman , has been extended so as to include inquiry into the system throughout the whole of the United Kingdom . Bro . Sir E . Monson , her Majesty ' s Minister Plenipotentiary at the Court of Athens , has signed a

protocol—which has likewise been signed by the Greek Minister for Foreign Affairs—regulating the status of joint-stock companies in England and Greece . The Children ' s Jubilee Tribute to the Queen was recently closed at a meeting at 69 , Portland-square , at which Mrs . Goschen presided , and the sum collected amounting to upwards of £ 6000 has been presented to her Majesty

by the Princess Victoria of Teck , on behalf of the children , in a purse fastened by a diamond brooch intended as a personal ornament for the Queen . Her Majesty , through Mrs . Goschen , has sent her thanks to the Committee both for the tribute and the brooch , and the former will be devoted to the purpose of adding a wing to the Hospital for Sick Children in Great Ormond-street .

The Countess Granville and the Ladies Leveson-Gower have left town for Walmer Castle , but Bro . Earl Granville will remain in town till the close of the Parliamentary Session . The Elcho Challenge Shield , which was won this year at Wimbledon by the Irish Eight , was handed over for temporary custody to the Executive of the Irish Exhibition at Olympia on Saturday last . The trophy was

conveyed thither on a gun carriage , under an escort of the London Irish Rifles , commanded by Major Lloyd , and on arrival was conveyed to the West gallery and placed in a convenient receptacle , Major Lloyd explaining that he had been deputed to hand it over by Bro . the Duke of Abercorn , Captain of the Irish Eight . Bro . Lord Arthur Hill , M . P ., on behalf of the Executive , received it , and promised to hand it over to the Lord Mayor of Dublin at the close of the Exhibition .

Miss Alice Milbank , daughter of Bro . Sir Frederick Milbank , Bart ., was last week married to Mr . David Dale in the parish church of Well , near Bedale , Yorkshire . There was a numerous congregation , and the bride was given away by her father . It was decided at a largely-attended meeting of the inhabitants of Dover , held on Friday , the 3 rd instant ,

under the presidency of the Mayor , to build a promenade pier at Dover , and a Committee was appointed to take the needful preliminary steps . A MASONIC FUNERAL . —On the 1 st inst . the funeral ot Bro . Wm . P . Nolan , who died on Monday , the 30 th ult ., at Fisherwick House , Newcastle , County Down , took place . At 10 o ' clock the remains were removed from

the late residence of deceased , S , Conlon-street , Old Lodgeroad , to the Borough Cemetery , where they were interred . There was a large turnout of the Masonic Fraternity . The members of Donegore True Blues Lodge , No . 92 , and other brethren attended the funeral of the late Worshipful Master in large numbers , and the companions of R . A . Chapter No . 97 were also present . There was a long line of vehicles .

The District Grand Lodge met in Quarterly Communication at the Masonic Hall , Brisbane , on the 6 th June , Bro . the Hon . A . C . Gregory , Dis ' . G . M ., being in the chair . There was very little business to transact , but the Dist . G . Treasurer , having obtained the permission of the D . G . M ., took the opportunity of correcting an impression which appears to prevail among the members of

lodges , particularly in the country districts , to the effect that large sums are remitted to the Grand Lodge of England by Colonial lodges . As the D . G . Treasurer was careful to point out , the only fees remitted to United Grand Lodge are the 7 s . 6 d . fees for registration of initiates in the books of Grand Lodge , which entitle them to their Grand Lodge certificates , and the 2 S . 6 d . fees for

registration in the case of those who join lodges . He added that no annual fees whatever , either from lodges or brethren , are sent home , and yet Colonial brethren are entitled to participate in the benefits afforded by the Board of Benevolence and the Charitable Institutions of the Craftin England . The 37 th annual general meeting of the Birkbeck Building Society will be held at the offices , Southampton Buildings , Chancery-lane , on Thursday , the 26 th instant , when the report for the past year will be presented , and three directors will be elected for the next three years . We note that this Annual Report is in all respects satisfactory , there being substantial increases in the several

balances due to the shareholders and the depositors , in the amount of assets , and in the year ' s profit . There has been a diminution in the amount of the advances owing to the depression in the value of house property generally , but there is an ample margin of security in all cases in which advances have been made . The only candidates for election

on the Board are the directors who retire by rotation . Bro . Major-General Goldsworthy presided at the annual general meeting , at St . James ' s Hall , on Wednesday , of the Cabdrivers' Benevolent Association . The report was of a satisfactory nature , and the President with the Vice-Presidents were re-elected for the ensuing year , with the addition to the latter of the worthy Chairman .

The Duke of Westminster leaves Eaton Hall next week for Stack Lodge , where he will stay for a month . The Duke has sub-let several of the shootings which he leases from the Duke of Sutherland , and he now has only one-half of his former ground in his own hands . The Prince of Wales goes to Homburg next week , where he will stay till the end of this month . He

will then pay some visits on the Continent , and intends to return to England about September 29 th . The Prince will not return to England for the Doncaster Races . A most interesting disco very , especially to antiquarians , was made at the close of last week , in a chalk

pit on Portsdown Hill , near Paulsgrove and Porchester . The " find " consists of a skeleton and upwards of 20 bronze Roman coins in a wonderfully good state of preservation . The skeleton is that of a strong man , who was about 6 ft . in height , and who must have lived about 1700 years ago .
