Freemasonry In Norfolk.

Special thank 1 ** were also accorded to the Prov . Grand Secretary , whose lab 'iirs in connection with the arrangements for the gathering had been very arduous , and who was to be congratulated on the success achieved . The PROV . GRAND MASTER announced that in ' consonance with the wish of the Dean the collection at the Cathedral would be devoted to the Reparation Fund ; also that the next meeting of the Prov . Grand Lodge would be held at Wymondham .

At five o ' clock , a special service , attended by a large number of brethren , was held at the Cathedral . The brethren marched in procession from the Choristers' School to the reserved seats in the choir . The surpliced clergy present included the Dean , Archdeacon Crosse , Canon de Chair , Minor Canon E . Bulmer , Revs . A . J . Alpe and L . G . Pollard , and Minor Canon Breffit . ,

I he early portion of the service was intoned by Minor Canon Breffit . The first lesson was read by the Rev . A . J . Alpe , and the second lesson by the Rev . L . G . Pollard . The canticles were sung to an effective setting by Bro . H . J . Brookes , and the anthem was Boyce ' s " Oh where should wisdom be found . " The remaining portion of the service was intoned by Archdeacon Crosse .

Before the collection the DEAN briefly explained the object to which it would be devoted , and implored the brethren to show their usual and characteristic benevolence by contributing liberally . The collection amounted to upwards of 20 guinea s . A banquet was held at the Royal Hotel in the evening . Bro . the Earl of Euston presided , and was supported on his right by Bro . Hamon le

Strange , P . G . M ., and on the left by Bro . Sir Francis Boileau , other prominent brethren at the head table being Bros . Sir Reginald Hanson ( late Lord Mayor of London ) , Sir W . H . B . ffolkes , Col . R . Townley Caldwell , Rev . C J . Martyn , H . J . Spark , E . Letchworth , G . Sec ; T . F . Halsey , M . P ., P . G . M . Herts ; T . J . Railing , G . W . Speth , A . R . Cook , N . Tracy , J . Richardson , Sir Charles Gilman , Rev . S . F . Creswell , G . W . Boileau , and others . A particularly choice menu was served , and the entire proceedings were of an enthusiastic character .

The Earl of EUSTON gave the loyal toasts * , and made a point of including the name of the Princess of Wales with that of H . R . H . the Prince of Wales . In submitting the toast of " The Grand Lodge and Supreme Grand Chapter , " the CHAIRMAN alluded to the great loss Freemasonry had sustained by the death of the Earl of Lathom .

Bro the W . D ., in response , paid a tribute to the worth of the newly installed P . G . M ., with whom he had spent a happy time at Eton and at Oxford , and who was initiated into Masonrv at the same time that he joined the Craft . He felt sure that the new Prov . G . M . would uphold the traditions of the Order , and would not allow its lustre to be diminished . Bro . Sir REGINALD HANSON also replied , his remarks being tinged with considerable humour .

Introducing " The Health of the R . W . Prov . G . M ., Bro . Hamon Ie Strange , " the CHAIRMAN congratulated the province on having a P . G . M . so thoroughly acquainted with his work , and who would unflinchingly do his duty ; one who would do everything he could to promote the welfare of the Craft in general , and of this province in particular . On rising to respond , the PROV . GRAND MASTER received quite an

ovation . He said he felt he could not sufficiently thank the brethren for the magnificent present they had made him . The beautiful address they had given him he should show to those who were not in the charmed circle as a proof that Masonic work was appreciated . He had an intimate acquaintance with all thc lodges , and his visits enabled him to form a just estimate of those who did good work and were entitled to recognition . It was

gratifying to see the good feeling existing between the different lodges and among the brethren . Masonry rested upon thc great pillar of Charity , but was not intended for those who only sought to make something out of it . It inculcated the virtues which are of advantage to the community at large . It would be his endf / avour to do his very best to promote the interests of the Craft which all loved so well .

" The Health of the G . Superintendent , Bro . Sir Francis Boileau , " was cordially drunk , as was that ol " The Rt . Hon . Lord Euston , the Installing Officer , " and " The Visitors . " During the evening some choice music was provided , under the direction of Bro . J . H . Brockbank , by the Cathedral Quartette Party .

Bro . OKEOVER said it would be within the recollection of those present that a year ago they adopted a resolution of condolence with the Pro Grand Master , Bro . the Earl of Lathom , on the calamity he had sustained by the terrible death of his wife . In response to that vote of condolence the Prov . G . Secretary , Bro . Naylor , received a letter from Bro . Lord Lathom which at the present time would have a melancholy interest for them all . In

that letter Bro . Lord Lathom asked that his heartfelt gratitude and thanks might be conveyed to the brethren for their truly fraternal and touching message , which they had been good enough to send to him and his family in the hour of their great affliction . There were , Bro . Okeover proceeded to say , most distressing and afflicting circumstances connected with that letter . It was not for him to dilate upon the capabilities of their late Pro

Grand Master , but this he might say , that no matter what position of life he happened to be placed in he always discharged his duties with integrity and honour , and in a manner that commanded the love and affection of all with whom he came in contact , whether Masons or otherwise . But his sad death came home to them as Masons with peculiar sorrow , and their only

consolation was that they had the memory of his bright example , which would long be an inspiration to his brother Masons in particular , as well as to his fellow countrymen in general . He moved that a resolution of condolence be forwarded to Bro . Lord Skelmersdale , the present Earl of Lathom , expressing their deep sense of the loss the Order had sustained . The resolution was seconded by Bro . THOMAS Cox and adopted .

In accordance with notice given at the last meeting of the Prov . Grand Lodge , Bro . OKEOVER next moved that the sum of 50 guineas be taken from the funds of the Prov . Grand Lodge , and given to the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys on the occasion of the recent Centenary Festival of the Institution . '

Bro . Cox seconded the resolution , which was carried . The next business was to receive the annual reports of the W . Ms , of the various lodges in the province . These , without exception , were of a satisfactory character , showing that steady progress was being made in the membership and general prosperity of the lodges . The reports of the Masonic Hall Committee , the Charity Committee , and the Audit Committee were read and adopted .

The report of the Charity Committee , which was read by Bro . PERCY WALLIS , showed that on the occasion of the Centenary Festival of the Boys ' School the magnificent sum of about ^ 2500 was sent up on behalf of the various lodges in the province , a statement which was loudly applauded . On the motion of Bro . Cox , seconded by Bro . E . HORNE , Bro . A . J . Flint , P . M . 253 , was elected Prov . G . Treasurer for the ensuing year .

The Masonic Hall Committee of Management was re-elected , and Bro . H . E . Diamond was nominated to represent the province on the Board of Management of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys . A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Bro . Percy Wallis for his invaluable services as Chairman of the Charity Committee for the province . The Dep . Prov . G . Master next proceeded to appoint and invest the

Prov . Grand Officers for the ensuing year as follows : Bro . J . Walker , P . M . 731 ... ... ... Prov . S . G . W . „ J . Sladen , P . M . 149 S - ••• ... Prov . J . G . W . „ Rev . G . OKEOVER , before closing the lodge , briefly addressed the brethren .

He said it had always been his good fortune to congratulate them on their general prosperiiy . He remembered years ago when there were only six or seven lodges , but now , as they had heard , the numbers had reached 27 . He thought their Prov . G . Master , had he been present , would have been satisfied that everything connected with the province was going on satisfactorily . He was sure , at all events , that they had done their best . VVhen the Prov .

G . Master realised what had been done on behalf of Charities , and that a magnificent sum of £ 2540 had been subscribed at the Boys'School Festival , he , like all of them , would have good reason to be proud . Who had done it all ? First of all he must congratulate the brethren at large ; and , secondly , he must congratulate the W . Ms , of the lodges , who had all put their shoulders to the wheel . He had to congratulate them on the reports that

had been read , and he trusted the same good fortune would continue to attend them—a fact of which he had no doubt , provided they acted in the same Masonic spirit that they had hitherto done . No doubt they would have their ups and downs , and that reminded him of the great loss they had sustained by thc lamented death of Bro . Sir John Smith . Sir John was a man who not only gave liberally of the things he possessed ,

but always displayed a kindly Masonic feeling , such as they might all try to emulate . Bro . Okeover concluded by paying a tribute to Bro . Percy Wallis , who had done such good work for the Masonic Charities , for which they could not thank him too highly . He wished all the brethren a happy and prosperous year—happy in themselves , happy in all their concerns , and happy in the advancement of the principles of FVeemasonry .
