Mark Masonry.

no doubt his time would be largely taken up in . the practice ot his . profession , but there were Past Masters always able and willing to take his place in an emergency . He was pleased to have the opportunity of proposing the toast , and in their name he could assure their W . M . that every member of the lodge would endeavour to make his year of office a pleasant and prosperous one . The W . M ., in response , said he felt as if he wis on toast—hot toast—and he thanked them for it . With regard to the wishes of their I . P . M ., that he would have

plenty of work , he endorsed the sentiment . He himself would like a " certain amount of work" —not too much , because one ' s thoughts do not ' always follow in the same channel . He trusted his officers would help him , and that they would all assist him to discharge the responsible duties he had undertaken . The I . P . M . having responded for "The Past Masters , " and Bros . C . Jolly , P . M . 226 , P . P . G . D ., and G . H . Porter , W . M . 226 , having responded for " The Visitors , " the toast of " The Installing Officers " was proposed , and received very cordially .

Bro . Campbell-Taylor , in responding , said they had every P . M . of the lodge present that night , with one exception ; and the W . M . might depend upon it that they would not desert him . So far as the installation ceremony went , he had already thanked them for their approval of the manner in which he had discharged his portion of the ceremony , and could only say that Bro . Bateman had done his work 50 well , that if thanks were due to anyone they were due tn that brother , and he would like them to also couple his name with the toast .

Bro . Bateman said that one of the strong points of the lodge was that the P . Ms , stuck to it . They always had had good P . Ms . He was happy to say the lodge had started a new life , and also that it had heen so well represented at the late Prov . Mark Meeting , and trusted the coming year would be as successful as the one just past . " The Officers " and Tyler ' s toast concluded the proceedings .

Noel Lodge , No . 505 . A regular meeting of the above lodge was held at the Jolly Sailors' Hotel , Kingstonon-Thames , on the 2 ist ult ., when there were present Bros . E . H . Lewis , P . G . S . Tylers . The lodge was opened , and the minutes read of tbe previous meeting . The ballot was then taken for Bro . W . King , 163 S , which proved unanimous . TheW . M . drew the attention of the brethren to the loss that Freemasonry had sustained by the death of < o distinguished and ter . evolent a brother as Lord Lathom , whose services were always at Freemasonry ' s disposal . It was unanimously resolved to send a telegram to

Bto . Lord Skernersdate and family expressing the brethren s condolence in their loss . Bros . W . Putman , H . Cameron , and W . King were in attendance , and they were regularly advanced to the honourable Degree of Mark Master Masons by the VV . M . in a very impressive manner . The subject of an Ark Mariner's lodge was further discussed . The petition being presented , the VV . M . signed it on behalf of the lodge . There were several propositions for advancement and joining , after which this flourishing young lodge was closed . The brethren then adjourned to supper , at the conclusion of which thc usual toasts were duly honoured .

BRO . WM . ECKERSALL , P . M . 217 , AND P . Z . 1275 , &< " *¦ With deep regret we have to record the death of this worthy brother at his residence , no , Lewisham-rOad , S . E ., on VVednesday , the 30 th ult ., of enteric fever , after an illness of three weeks . His whole life was one of usefulness , having heen engaged in one of the most honourable vocations—that of education—for nearly 5 <\ years ; and , being a tho'ough teacher and educationalist , he has left behind him many of the present generation who can , and have , testified

to his excellent training . His interment took place on the 3 rd inst atShooter ' s Hill Cemetery , in the presence of a thoroughly representative body—Masonic , educational , and other institutions—among whom were Bros . G . Say , W . M . 217 ; ] . Ayris , S . W . 217 ; W . H . Smith , J . W . 217 ; P . H . Garner , P . M . 217 ; Nixon , P . M . 217 ; Saml . K . D . Bain , 417 ; and C . H . Stone , P . M . 507 ; Mr . Gautrey , M . L . S . B . ; Mr . John Kirk , Sec . Ragged School Union , and Mrs . Kirk ; Messrs . Smith and Cuff ; Messrs . Nimms , Johns , Pearson , Ferguson , Makins , Greenwood , Prichard , Prosser , Horth , and Bryant ( staff of Beresford-street , Walworth where our deceased brother had been the head master for the last 14 years ) , "Miss Paton , Miss Grimsdick , and , not the least touching , about 40 of the 7 th and ex-standard 7 th boys , who had voluntarily

attended to show their respect to their late head master and friend , with many others . Our late brother was held in highjesteem in Stability Lodge , of which he was a P . M ., and of which he was very justly proud , and al-So a P . Z . of the Star Chapter , 1275 , which position he efficiently held last year . He was a Life Subscriber of the R . M . I . G . and Life Governor and Steward of the R . M . B . I ., but the true spirit of Freemasonry was exemplified in his extending the benevolent hand to many known only to himself . The officiating clergyman was the Rev . Mr .

Youngman , a personal and very dear friend of the family . The floral tributes were numerous and beautiful , among them being from his loving wife and family , the Stability Lodge , the Star Chapter , B . S . and J . Morland , Boys' and Infant Department Beresford-street , Walworth , Girls' Department Morden-terrace , Blackheath , and many private and very dear friends , with such expressions as sorrowing , affectionate , loving sympathy , respectful sympathy , deepest sympathy , sincere regards , deep sympathy , and also one from the boys of the upper standard . We offer our condolence to his sorrowing wife and family .

BRO . A . L . PEACE . Bro . A . L . Peace died very suddenly at his residence at Thorne , on Saturday , the 26 th ult . His death was a shock to . the whole neighbourhood , including Doncaster and many miles round . A contemporaay says : Those who knew Bro . Peace—and who in Thorne or its immediate neighbourhood did not know him ? —were shocked beyond descr iption at the awful suddenness with which the strong man had been brought down , for many had not heard of his indisposition , and

those who had only considered it one of those passing bronchial troubles incidental to the winter season , and to the recurrence of which with the cold weather the deceased was susceptible , and never for a moment supposed that it would have a fatal termination . We have referred to Bro . Peace as a strong man , and this he was eminently—strong intellectually no less than physically . Tall , powerfully built , and with good clean-cut features , he was a man who would be singled out in a crowd as one of well-marked individuality , and his outward appearance did

not belie his true character . Endowed with the priceless gift of an iron constitution he fought the battle of life honourably and successfully , and had attained the position in life which he enjoyed b y indomitable perseverance , combined with natural abilities of no mean order , He held very many public offices , and was a prominent Freemason , and one who took a great interest in the Craft . He was initiated in 1883 at Enworth , in the Isle of Axholme Lodge , No . 1482 , and he was raised to the position of M . M . in

April of the same year , and advanced to Mark Mason in January , 18 S 9 . He then joined the St . Oswald Lodge , Crowle , No . 387 . He was a founder of the St . Nicholas Lodge , Thorne , in 188 S , and was its W . M . in 188 9 and 1 893 , and it will be remembered by many that on the occasion of the consecration of this lodge he was accorded a very high eulogy at the hands of the Prov . G . M . of West York , shire ( Bro . Tew ) . His great interest in Masonry was that of benevolence and Charity , as by his unostentatious chararter he was never one to court honours .

He was also a member of the Magdalen Chapter , Doncaster , and of the Aire and Calder Chapter , Goole . He was S . N . of the Doncaster Chapter , and in January next he would most probably have been elected Third Principal . He was also invested with a jewel that had been presented by a Prov . G . M . to his lather . Bro . Peace was essentially a man who did not let his left hand know all that his right hand did . Of a benevolent and kindly disposition , he performed many acts of

Charity unknown to any but himself , and he was always willing to render help either financial or otherwise to anything that would tend to benefit the town of his adoption . His removal at the age of 61 , in the full and vigorous enjoyment of all his faculties , will be deeply deplored in Thorne and its surrounding district . The deceased brother , who was a widower , leaves issue one son and three daughters-Mr . Alfred E . Peace , Mrs . E . Donkin , Mrs . Theo . Barber , and Mrs . Tom R . R Mirsdin .

He trusted his officers would help him , and that they would all assist him to discharge the responsible duties he had undertaken . The I . P .

Tom R . R Mirsdin .
